The Photograph at Gate D24 / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11: The Floor That Didn’t Exist

The elevator disappeared below the terminal.

But nobody moved.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

The airport they thought they knew was hiding something underneath it.

Nia looked at the security panel beside the elevator.

“An underground level.””

She shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Is it?””

She turned.

“This airport was built with public records, engineering plans, security maps—”

“And if someone wanted something hidden,” Daniel interrupted, “would they put it on those records?””

Nia had no answer.

Marissa looked toward the elevator.

“B4 was never supposed to be found.””

Arthur looked at her.

“How do you know?””

Marissa stayed quiet.

That silence was enough.

Nia noticed.

“You’ve been there.””

Marissa looked away.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“And you didn’t tell me.””

“I couldn’t.””

“You couldn’t,” Daniel repeated.

His voice was colder now.

“You always had a reason.””

Marissa looked hurt.

“You think I wanted any of this?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“My father spent years grieving me.””

“I know.””

“My life was stolen.””

“I know.””

“My entire identity disappeared.””

Marissa’s eyes filled with anger.

“You think I don’t know what it feels like to lose everything?””

The hallway went silent.

For the first time, Nia saw something different.

Not an enemy.

A survivor.

Marissa looked down.

“I lost my entire team.””

Daniel said nothing.

“I lost my name.””

Arthur watched her.

“You were erased too.””

Marissa nodded.

“Yes.””

A notification sounded from Nia’s radio.

She answered.

“Carter.””

A dispatcher responded.

“Officer, we need you to leave the area immediately.””

Nia frowned.

“Why?””

“We received orders from federal security.””

“From who?””

A pause.

Then:

“The order came from the director.””

Nia looked at Daniel.

“What director?””

The dispatcher lowered their voice.

“Director Elijah Reed.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

Marissa whispered:

“He’s alive.””

Nia looked at the radio.

“You’re saying Captain Reed is now in charge?””

Nobody answered.

Because that possibility was worse than anything they had imagined.

Daniel stared at the elevator.

“Open it.””

Nia looked at him.

“Daniel—”

“Open it.””

“We don’t know what’s down there.””

He looked at her.

“I do.””

“How?””

Daniel touched Rex’s collar.

“Because this dog spent years trying to lead me back.””

Rex looked toward the elevator.

Waiting.

Nia studied him.

Then made a decision.

She contacted the security system.

“Override elevator access.””

The panel rejected it.

ACCESS DENIED.

She tried again.

Same result.

Then Rex moved.

He placed his paw against the panel.

Everyone stared.

Nothing happened.

Then the screen changed.

ACCESS RECOGNIZED.

Nia looked at Daniel.

“That’s not possible.””

Daniel looked at Rex.

“He was never just a police dog.””

The elevator doors opened.

Cold air came from below.

A hidden floor.

A place that didn’t exist.

They stepped inside.

The elevator descended.

No one spoke.

The numbers changed.

1.

2.

3.

Then:

B4.

The doors opened.

A massive underground facility appeared.

Not abandoned.

Active.

Computers.

Monitors.

Files.

Photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Nia stepped out slowly.

“This has been here the whole time?””

Marissa nodded.

“Yes.””

Arthur looked around.

“What is this place?””

Daniel walked toward the nearest desk.

A file sat waiting.

His name was printed on it.

He opened it.

Inside were reports.

Medical records.

Mission details.

Every moment of his life.

But one page made him stop.

Nia noticed.

“What?””

Daniel handed it to her.

She read.

Her face changed.

The document wasn’t about Daniel.

It was about Rex.

*SUBJECT: K9 UNIT R-17*

*STATUS: MEMORY RETENTION CONFIRMED*

Nia looked up.

“Memory retention?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“They weren’t studying me.””

He looked at Rex.

“They were studying him.””

Arthur stepped closer.

“Why?””

Daniel turned another page.

A photograph fell out.

It showed Rex years earlier.

Standing beside Captain Elijah Reed.

But behind them was another person.

A person they had not seen before.

Nia picked up the photo.

“Who is that?””

Daniel looked at the face.

His expression changed.

Because he knew him.

“No.””

Arthur looked over.

“Who?””

Daniel whispered:

“That’s the man who trained me.””

Marissa stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because he died before you joined the military.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at the photograph.

Another impossible face.

Another impossible survival.

Then the facility lights turned on one by one.

A voice came through the speakers.

This time, it wasn’t the mysterious caller.

It was familiar.

Older.

Calm.

“Daniel.””

Everyone looked up.

The voice continued.

“You finally came home.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Elijah.””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

Arthur grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“Your commander?””

Daniel stared at the speakers.

“Alive.””

The voice continued.

“But you still don’t know the worst part.””

Nia looked around the facility.

“What worst part?””

The answer came through every speaker.

“Daniel Carter was never the person we were trying to find.””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“He was the person we were trying to protect.””
