Chapter 7: The Phone Behind the Wall
The ringing phone was the only sound left in Terminal D.
Not the alarms.
Not the confused voices of passengers.
Not the announcements repeating emergency instructions.
Just the phone.
One slow ring at a time.
Everyone turned toward it.
Officer Nia Carter followed the sound.
It was coming from the wall near Gate D24.
A place where there had never been a phone.
At least, not one visible.
Daniel’s face changed the moment he heard it.
“No.””
Nia looked at him.
“You know that phone?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
The phone rang again.
Arthur looked at his son.
“What is happening?””
Daniel stared at the wall.
“That phone was used the night I disappeared.””
The words made Nia’s attention sharpen.
“The night you supposedly died?””
Daniel nodded.
“I was told never to answer it.””
“By who?””
Daniel looked toward the woman in the black coat.
She lowered her eyes.
“I told him.””
Arthur turned toward her.
“You?””
The woman looked older suddenly.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
“I was the one who delivered the message.””
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“You told me my son was dead.””
The woman couldn’t look at him.
“Yes.””
A painful silence followed.
Nia stepped closer.
“Then you need to explain everything.””
The woman looked at the ringing phone.
“Not before we answer it.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Nia looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because whoever is calling knows we’re here.””
“And?””
Daniel looked around the locked terminal.
“They want us to answer.””
The phone rang again.
Arthur stared at it.
“My whole life I wanted answers.””
He stepped forward.
“Now they’re calling.””
Daniel grabbed his father’s arm.
“Dad.””
Arthur looked at him.
“I lost you once.””
His voice broke.
“I won’t stand here and lose the truth too.””
Daniel slowly released him.
Nia walked toward the wall.
“Everyone stay back.””
She reached the hidden panel beside Gate D24.
There was no handle.
No screen.
No visible mechanism.
But when she touched the wall, a small section opened.
Behind it was an old black telephone.
Not a modern airport device.
An old military field phone.
Nia stared.
“How has this been here?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Because someone wanted it to be.””
She picked up the receiver.
For a second, there was only static.
Then a voice.
A man’s voice.
Calm.
Controlled.
“Officer Carter.””
Nia froze.
“You know who I am.””
“I know everything about you.””
The terminal felt colder.
“Who is this?””
The voice ignored the question.
“Is Daniel with you?””
Nia looked at him.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Give me the phone.””
Nia didn’t move.
“Not yet.””
The voice continued.
“Officer Carter, you have ten minutes.””
“For what?””
“To decide whether you protect the truth…”
A pause.
“Or protect the people around you.””
Nia tightened her grip.
“Are you threatening us?””
“No.””
The voice sounded almost disappointed.
“I’m warning you.””
Daniel finally took the phone.
“It’s me.””
A long silence.
Then the voice changed.
“Daniel.””
Everyone noticed.
The caller knew him.
“You should have stayed gone.””
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“You should have stopped hurting innocent people.””
The voice became colder.
“You still think this is about you.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
The caller continued.
“The photograph was never proof you survived.””
Nia watched Daniel carefully.
“Then what was it?””
The voice answered:
“Proof that you were never the only one who survived.””
Daniel went completely still.
Arthur looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
The call suddenly ended.
The phone went dead.
Nia looked at Daniel.
“What did he mean?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
The woman in the black coat did.
“There were others.””
Nia turned.
“Others?””
The woman nodded.
“Other soldiers.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You told me everyone was gone.””
“I was told they were.””
The lights flickered again.
This time, the security doors unlocked.
Passengers immediately began moving toward the exits.
But Nia didn’t move.
Because Daniel was staring at the faded photograph.
At the young soldier.
At Rex.
At the person hidden in the background.
“Who else was there?”” she asked.
Daniel slowly lifted the picture.
“I don’t know.””
Arthur looked at him.
“But you recognize something.””
Daniel said nothing.
Nia noticed.
“Daniel.””
His voice became quiet.
“The man behind us.””
He pointed at the hidden figure.
“That wasn’t a stranger.””
The woman stepped closer.
“Who was it?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“He was my commanding officer.””
Arthur frowned.
“Your commander?””
Daniel nodded.
“And he died before I disappeared.””
Nia stared at the picture.
“Then why is he in a photo taken years later?””
Nobody answered.
Because they all understood the same impossible truth.
Someone in that photograph was not supposed to exist.
And then Rex suddenly moved.
The dog ran toward the gate entrance.
Nia grabbed the leash.
“Rex!””
But he stopped near a small gap beneath the security door.
He sniffed.
Then pulled something forward with his teeth.
A piece of fabric.
Daniel picked it up.
His face changed.
It was part of a military uniform.
With a name patch.
Nia looked at it.
May you like
And read the name.
*CARTER.*
