Chapter 13: The Man Who Forgot Himself
Arthur stepped backward.
The identification card slipped from his fingers and landed on the metal floor.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Even the facility seemed to hold its breath.
Rex continued staring at him.
Not with aggression.
Not with fear.
With recognition.
Arthur looked at the dog.
“Why is he looking at me like that?””
No one answered.
Daniel stared at Elijah.
“What does this mean?””
Elijah didn’t look away from Arthur.
“It means the truth is not what you remember.””
Arthur’s face tightened.
“My memories are mine.””
Elijah nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why is my name on that card?””
Elijah walked toward the table and picked it up.
“Because years ago, someone changed the records.””
Nia stepped forward.
“Changed the records to make Arthur Carter disappear?””
Elijah looked at her.
“Not disappear.””
“Then what?””
“To make him believe he was someone else.””
The words felt impossible.
Arthur shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel moved closer to his father.
“Dad…”
Arthur raised a hand.
“Don’t.””
His voice was broken.
“I know who I am.””
Elijah looked at him.
“That’s what they wanted.””
Nia studied Arthur carefully.
She had seen witnesses forget details after trauma.
She had seen people block painful memories.
But this was different.
This was intentional.
Someone had rewritten a person’s entire history.
“Explain,” Nia demanded.
Elijah looked at the monitors.
“Years ago, there was a program designed to protect critical witnesses.””
Daniel frowned.
“Protect?””
“Yes.””
“By changing their identities?””
Elijah nodded.
“By removing connections.””
Arthur stared.
“My brother…”
Elijah’s expression changed.
“The person you knew as Marcus was assigned to protect you.””
Arthur looked confused.
“Protect me from what?””
Elijah was silent.
Then he answered:
“Yourself.””
Arthur’s face went pale.
Daniel stepped forward.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Elijah looked at him.
“You found evidence that powerful people were eliminating witnesses.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“You thought the witnesses were soldiers.””
Daniel said nothing.
“Some were.””
Elijah pointed at Arthur.
“But the most important witness was your father.””
Arthur shook his head.
“I was never a soldier.””
“No.””
Elijah looked at him.
“You were the person who created the system that exposed them.””
Nia looked surprised.
Arthur stared.
“I don’t understand.””
“You designed the security network they used.””
Daniel looked at Arthur.
“My father?””
Elijah nodded.
“Arthur Carter was one of the smartest intelligence engineers in the country.””
Arthur touched his own face.
“No.””
“You created a system that could track erased identities.””
Elijah continued.
“And when you discovered people were using that same system to erase innocent people, you tried to expose them.””
Daniel looked at the photographs.
“That’s why they came after him.””
“Yes.””
Arthur looked at Rex.
“And Daniel?””
Elijah’s voice softened.
“Daniel found out.””
The room became quiet.
“He discovered what happened to you.””
Arthur looked at his son.
Daniel looked away.
“I remember searching.””
Elijah nodded.
“You were young. Angry. Determined.””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I thought I lost my father.””
“You did.””
Arthur looked at him.
Daniel continued:
“I thought you were gone.””
Elijah looked at Arthur.
“They changed your identity and buried your old life.””
Arthur whispered:
“But I remembered Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
Elijah looked at Rex.
“Because Rex remembered too.””
The dog stepped closer to Arthur.
Daniel watched.
“The training.””
Elijah nodded.
“Rex was taught to recognize patterns no human could.””
Nia looked at the files.
“Memory triggers.””
“Yes.””
Arthur touched Rex’s head.
The dog leaned against him.
Then suddenly Arthur froze.
A memory.
Not complete.
A flash.
A room.
A young Daniel.
Rex barking.
A voice saying:
“Dad, promise me you’ll come back.””
Arthur grabbed his head.
Daniel immediately caught him.
“Dad?””
Arthur breathed heavily.
“I remember.””
Everyone went still.
“What?””
Arthur looked at Daniel.
His eyes filled with tears.
“I remember leaving you.””
Daniel froze.
“You left?””
Arthur shook his head quickly.
“No.””
He looked devastated.
“I mean…”
He touched Daniel’s face.
“I remember trying to come back.””
A tear rolled down his cheek.
“But they stopped me.””
Elijah looked at the floor.
“Yes.””
Arthur looked up.
“Who?””
Before Elijah could answer, every monitor in the facility turned red.
An alarm sounded.
Nia checked her radio.
“Someone breached the upper terminal.””
Daniel looked toward the elevator.
“They found us.””
Elijah nodded.
“They always do.””
Nia looked at him.
“Who?””
Elijah stared at Arthur.
“The person who started all of this.””
The elevator began descending.
Slowly.
Someone was coming down.
Arthur stepped back.
Rex moved in front of him.
Daniel looked at the elevator display.
The number changed.
B4.
Then stopped.
The doors opened.
A figure stepped out.
And Daniel recognized the face immediately.
Because it was the face from every photograph.
The man everyone believed was dead.
Captain Elijah Reed.
But the man standing beside them was already Elijah Reed.
Two identical faces.
Two identical men.
One truth.
One lie.
The newcomer smiled.
“Hello, Daniel.””
He looked at Arthur.
“It’s been a long time.””
May you like
Arthur whispered:
“Marcus.””
