Chapter 6: The Witness Who Vanished

Nobody moved.

The woman’s voice wasn’t loud.

She didn’t need to be.

The confidence in her words carried across the space between them.

Daniel stared at her like he was seeing a nightmare return.

Arthur tightened his grip on his cane.

Nia noticed something immediately.

Daniel wasn’t angry.

He was afraid.

“Who is she?”” Nia asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

The woman took another step forward.

“Daniel.””

Her voice was almost gentle.

“You look older.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

The woman smiled sadly.

“Neither should you.””

Nia stepped between them.

“Ma’am, identify yourself.””

The woman looked at her.

“Officer Carter.””

Nia froze slightly.

The woman knew her name.

“I asked you to identify yourself.””

The woman ignored the question.

Instead, she looked at Rex.

The dog immediately growled.

A deep warning sound.

Daniel noticed.

“He remembers you too.””

The woman’s expression changed.

Only briefly.

But Nia saw it.

Fear.

“You brought him here,” the woman whispered.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Rex.

“He brought us here.””

Arthur stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at the woman.

“It means Rex knew before any of us did.””

The woman reached into her coat.

Several officers nearby reacted instantly.

“Hands where we can see them!”” one officer shouted.

She stopped.

Slowly raised both hands.

“I’m not armed.””

Nia watched her carefully.

“Then why are you here?””

The woman looked at Arthur.

“Because he deserves the truth.””

Arthur’s voice cracked.

“The truth about what?””

The woman looked at Daniel.

“About what your son discovered.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“No.””

The woman ignored him.

“About why he had to disappear.””

Arthur looked between them.

“My son was a soldier.””

“Yes.””

“He served his country.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did they tell me he died?””

The woman looked down.

“Because if you knew he was alive…”

She paused.

“Someone would have killed you too.””

Arthur went silent.

Nia studied her.

The story was impossible.

But the fear in everyone’s eyes was real.

“Start from the beginning,” Nia said.

The woman looked at her.

“I don’t have much time.””

“Then use it.””

The woman looked around.

At the cameras.

At the security officers.

At the crowd.

“They’re already watching.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Who?””

The woman looked at him.

“The same people who have been watching you since the day you disappeared.””

A notification suddenly sounded from Nia’s radio.

“Officer Carter.””

She answered immediately.

“Go ahead.””

The dispatcher sounded nervous.

“We have a problem.””

“What kind of problem?””

A pause.

“Someone accessed the airport surveillance system.””

Nia looked at the woman.

“How?””

The dispatcher continued.

“They’re showing a live feed from inside this terminal.””

Everyone looked around.

Then every monitor turned on again.

But this time, the screens did not show a warning message.

They showed them.

Nia.

Daniel.

Arthur.

Rex.

The woman.

A live camera view from above.

The woman looked at the screens.

And whispered:

“They found us.””

Daniel grabbed Arthur’s shoulder.

“We need to move.””

Nia shook her head.

“No. We need answers.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

His eyes moved to the monitors.

“To them, this isn’t about hiding me anymore.””

A chill ran through Nia.

“Then what is it about?””

Daniel looked at Arthur.

The old man was still holding the photograph.

“The photograph.””

Nia looked down.

The faded image.

The young soldier.

The young Rex.

The hidden figure in the background.

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“That picture proves something they spent years trying to erase.””

The woman stepped closer.

“And now everyone knows it exists.””

Arthur looked at her.

“What was so important about this photograph?””

The woman opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, the airport lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every exit door in Terminal D locked at the same time.

Passengers screamed.

Security alarms erupted.

Rex immediately moved in front of Arthur.

Daniel looked toward the ceiling cameras.

His face turned pale.

“No…”

Nia gripped her radio.

“What happened?””

The dispatcher’s voice came through, barely audible.

“Officer Carter…”

Static.

Then:

“We just received a message.””

Nia waited.

“What message?””

The dispatcher hesitated.

Then said:

“It says…”

A pause.

“Let Daniel Carter leave.””

Everyone looked at Daniel.

The dispatcher continued:

“Or Gate D24 will be the first place where the truth disappears forever.””

The monitors went black.

May you like

And from somewhere inside the locked terminal…

A phone began ringing.
