Chapter 12: The Truth Beneath Gate D24

The underground facility became completely silent.

Daniel stared at the speakers.

“Protect me?””

The voice of Captain Elijah Reed echoed back.

“Yes.””

Daniel walked toward the nearest monitor.

“Then why erase me?””

No answer.

Nia watched him.

For the first time, Daniel looked less like a soldier and more like someone searching for the missing pieces of his own life.

Arthur stepped closer.

“Tell him the truth.””

Elijah’s voice returned.

“Arthur.””

The old man froze.

“You know me too?””

“Yes.””

Arthur’s face hardened.

“You knew my family.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me bury my son.””

A pause.

Then:

“I saved your son.””

Arthur shook his head.

“No.””

His voice trembled.

“You stole him.””

Daniel looked at his father.

“Dad…”

Arthur continued.

“I spent years wondering why nobody gave me answers.””

His eyes filled.

“I wasn’t asking for a miracle.””

He looked toward the speakers.

“I was asking why my son was taken.””

The room stayed quiet.

Then Elijah answered.

“Because Daniel discovered something that could destroy powerful people.””

Nia stepped closer.

“What did he discover?””

A monitor suddenly turned on.

A file appeared.

A list of names.

Military officials.

Government contractors.

Security directors.

The names continued scrolling.

“This is what Daniel found,” Elijah said.

Nia stared.

“A corruption network.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

“I knew about the operation.””

Elijah corrected him.

“No.””

Daniel frowned.

“You knew?””

“I knew pieces.””

The monitor changed.

A video appeared.

Daniel saw himself.

Years younger.

Standing beside Rex.

Recording a message.

His own voice played.

“If anyone finds this, it means I failed.””

Daniel stepped back.

“That’s my voice.””

Arthur watched.

The video continued.

Young Daniel looked exhausted.

“I found evidence that people inside the system are eliminating witnesses.””

The video paused.

Then Daniel’s younger self looked directly into the camera.

“And the person helping them…”

Everyone leaned closer.

The recording glitched.

The image distorted.

Then a name appeared.

*MARCUS CARTER.*

Arthur froze.

“No.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“My uncle?””

Elijah’s voice returned.

“Marcus wasn’t erased because he discovered the truth.””

Arthur stared at the screen.

“Then why?””

“Because he was part of it.””

The words destroyed the silence.

Arthur shook his head.

“No.””

Nia looked at him.

“Arthur…”

“My brother protected people.””

Elijah answered.

“Your brother protected himself.””

Daniel looked furious.

“You’re lying.””

A door at the far end of the facility unlocked.

Everyone turned.

Slow footsteps approached.

Nia raised her weapon.

“Show yourself.””

The person stepped into the light.

Older.

Gray hair.

A familiar face.

Arthur stopped breathing.

Daniel stared.

Because he had seen this man before.

In the photographs.

Captain Elijah Reed.

Alive.

But older.

Different.

The man looked at Arthur.

“I’m sorry.””

Arthur whispered:

“Marcus?””

The man looked down.

“No.””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Elijah Reed.””

Daniel looked between the photograph and the man standing before them.

His mind struggled to understand.

“You’re saying…”

The man nodded.

“The person you thought was Marcus…”

He looked at Arthur.

“Was never your brother.””

Arthur stepped backward.

“No.””

Nia looked at the old photograph.

The hidden figure.

The erased identities.

The impossible deaths.

Everything connected.

Elijah walked closer.

“Daniel.””

Daniel stared.

“Where is Marcus?””

Elijah’s expression became heavy.

“Dead.””

Arthur closed his eyes.

“But you said…”

Elijah interrupted.

“The man you buried was not Marcus.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Then who was he?””

Elijah looked toward Rex.

The dog was staring at him.

Remembering.

“The first person they buried.””

He reached into his coat and placed an old identification card on the table.

Nia picked it up.

Her face changed.

Because the name on the card was:

*ARTHUR CARTER.*

Everyone turned toward the old man.

Arthur looked at it.

Then whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Elijah looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“That’s the truth you were never supposed to find.””

Rex suddenly began barking.

Not at Elijah.

Not at the door.

At Arthur.

And the old man looked down at his own hands.

Confused.

Terrified.

Because for the first time…

May you like

Rex wasn’t recognizing someone else.

He was recognizing him.
