Chapter 5: The Secret Inside the Duffel Bag
Nia had spent her career chasing people who ran away.
But Daniel Carter was the first person she had met who was afraid of catching the person chasing him.
She pulled her arm free.
“You expect me to ignore someone who just threatened an entire airport?””
Daniel looked at her.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“I expect you to understand that this is bigger than one person.””
Arthur stepped between them.
“My son is alive after all these years.””
He looked at Daniel.
“And you’re telling me someone has been hiding you?””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That hurt more than the silence.
“Daniel,” Arthur said, “I buried you.””
The words cut through the noise of the terminal.
“I visited your grave.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I know.””
Arthur froze.
“You know?””
Daniel looked away.
“I watched.””
Nia saw Arthur’s face change.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Pain.
“You watched me suffer?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I had no choice.””
Arthur’s voice shook.
“Everyone always says that.””
He stepped back.
“Everyone always says they had no choice.””
For a moment, Daniel looked like he wanted to explain.
But then Rex moved.
The dog walked toward Arthur’s duffel bag.
Again.
Nia noticed immediately.
“Rex found something.””
Daniel looked at the bag.
His expression changed.
“What’s inside?””
Arthur looked confused.
“Clothes. Papers. The photograph.””
Daniel stared at the bag.
“No.””
His voice became urgent.
“Open it.””
Arthur hesitated.
“Why?””
“Because if that photograph was sent to you, it wasn’t sent alone.””
Nia knelt beside the bag.
“Everyone take a step back.””
She carefully opened the zipper.
Inside were old clothes, folded documents, and a small notebook.
Nothing unusual.
Then Rex nudged the side pocket.
Nia opened it.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
Arthur frowned.
“That wasn’t there before.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Are you sure?””
Arthur nodded.
“I packed this bag myself.””
Nia examined the envelope.
No name.
No address.
Only one symbol stamped in black ink.
Daniel saw it.
And immediately stepped backward.
“No.””
Nia looked up.
“What is it?””
Daniel’s face had lost all color.
“That symbol…”
He stopped.
“Daniel?””
He looked at the envelope.
“That’s the organization that erased me.””
The terminal noise seemed to disappear.
Nia carefully turned the envelope over.
“You’re saying someone who wanted you gone sent this?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Arthur looked at his son.
“Why would they send something to me?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
Nia opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Three words.
That was all.
*HE IS WATCHING.*
Arthur looked confused.
“Who?””
Daniel stared at the message.
Then slowly looked toward the airport windows.
Nia followed his eyes.
Outside, airplanes moved across the runway.
People walked in the distance.
Nothing seemed unusual.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Him.””
Nia looked at him.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
Instead, he reached into his jacket and pulled out an old military identification card.
He placed it beside the photograph.
Nia looked down.
The picture showed Daniel and Rex years earlier.
But there was something else.
A second person stood in the background.
A man.
Half hidden.
Watching them.
Nia picked up the photo.
“Who is that?””
Daniel’s silence answered before his words did.
“The man who ordered me to disappear.””
Arthur stared.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at his father.
“Because I found out what he was really doing.””
A sudden announcement interrupted them.
“Attention passengers. Due to a security situation, Gate D24 is temporarily closed.””
The crowd began moving away.
Airport police officers approached.
Nia noticed Daniel watching every exit.
“You’re expecting someone.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Rex.
The dog was staring toward the terminal entrance.
Waiting.
Then Daniel said:
“The person who sent the photograph.””
Nia followed Rex’s gaze.
A woman in a black coat had entered the terminal.
She wasn’t running.
She wasn’t hiding.
She was walking directly toward them.
And she was carrying the same faded photograph.
Arthur saw her.
His face went pale.
Because he recognized her.
“Daniel…”
His voice trembled.
“That’s impossible.””
Nia looked at him.
“Who is she?””
Arthur couldn’t take his eyes off the woman.
“She was there the day they told me my son died.””
The woman stopped twenty feet away.
She looked directly at Daniel.

Then she said:
“You were never supposed to come home.””
