Chapter 12: The Woman Who Knew the Truth

Nobody moved.

Darius held the phone.

The others watched him.

But everyone was watching Celeste.

Because the woman on the phone had just repeated the same warning.

Do not trust Celeste.

Celeste looked devastated.

“No.””

She stepped forward.

“Let me talk to her.””

Darius hesitated.

Then handed her the phone.

“Who is this?””

Celeste’s voice shook.

“Evelyn?””

A long silence.

Then the woman answered.

“Yes.””

Celeste closed her eyes.

“You’re alive.””

The sentence confused everyone.

Darius looked at Marcus.

Marcus looked equally shocked.

“What does that mean?””

Celeste ignored them.

“Where have you been?””

Evelyn’s voice was weak.

“Hiding.””

“From who?””

A pause.

“From the same person Naomi was hiding from.””

Celeste gripped the phone.

“Tell me.””

“No.””

“Evelyn.””

“You already know enough to be in danger.””

Celeste looked at Amara.

“I need to know.””

Evelyn sighed.

“Then listen carefully.””

The room became silent.

“Naomi didn’t disappear because of Victor.””

Marcus stepped back.

“What?””

Celeste stared.

“Then who?””

Evelyn answered:

“Daniel.””

The name hit like an explosion.

Amara looked confused.

“My stepfather?””

Celeste shook her head.

“No.””

But her voice lacked certainty.

Evelyn continued.

“Daniel was obsessed with controlling everything.””

Celeste whispered:

“That’s not true.””

“You married him.””

The words hurt.

“But you never knew him.””

Celeste looked away.

Darius watched her.

“Evelyn, where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because he might still be alive.””

The room froze.

Celeste’s breathing stopped.

“Daniel is dead.””

“No.””

Evelyn’s voice cracked.

“He wanted you to believe that.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Then who died?””

Nobody answered.

Because suddenly the question wasn’t where Daniel had gone.

It was whether the man Celeste buried had ever been Daniel at all.

Amara looked at the photograph.

“My mom knew?””

Evelyn became quiet.

Then:

“Yes.””

“She knew?””

“She found out Daniel was using another identity.””

Celeste covered her mouth.

“No.””

Evelyn continued.

“Naomi was going to expose him.””

Darius looked at Marcus.

“And Victor?””

“Victor was a distraction.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Evelyn’s voice became urgent.

“Daniel made everyone look at Victor because Victor was easier to blame.””

Celeste sat down.

Her entire world shifted.

“So Naomi trusted me because…”

“Because you were the only person who could get Amara away.””

A tear rolled down Celeste’s face.

“But I failed.””

Evelyn went silent.

Then quietly:

“Yes.””

The word hurt.

But it was not cruel.

It was honest.

Celeste lowered her head.

Darius took the phone.

“Evelyn, we need to find you.””

“No.””

“We need answers.””

“You need to protect Amara.””

Darius looked at the girl.

“How?””

Evelyn whispered:

“Because he knows she found the photograph.””

Everyone looked toward the windows.

Suddenly, the security lights outside turned off.

One by one.

The parking lot disappeared into darkness.

Darius stood immediately.

“Everyone stay back.””

A shadow moved outside.

Amara grabbed Celeste’s hand.

The same hand she had been unsure she could trust.

But right now, fear was stronger than doubt.

Darius moved toward the door.

Marcus stopped him.

“Don’t.””

“Why?””

Marcus stared into the darkness.

“Because that’s what he wants.””

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Someone was outside.

Waiting.

Evelyn’s voice came through the phone one last time.

“Darius.””

“Yes?””

Her voice trembled.

“When the door opens…”

A pause.

“Don’t look at who walks in first.””

Everyone froze.

“Why?””

Evelyn whispered:

“Because Daniel never worked alone.””

The door opened.

And standing beneath the emergency lights was someone nobody expected.

Someone who had been searching for Amara all night.

Someone who knew every secret.

Someone who had been trusted by everyone in the room.

Celeste whispered the name.

May you like

And Amara realized the truth was much closer than she ever imagined.

“Mom’s not the only one who was betrayed…”
