Chapter 9: The Person Naomi Feared Most
Nobody spoke.
The sentence sat between them like a loaded weapon.
*The person who betrayed me is someone Amara trusts.*
Amara looked around the room.
At Celeste.
At Marcus.
At Darius.
Her eyes searched for an answer.
But everyone looked afraid.
“Someone I trust?””
Her voice cracked.
“Who?””
Marcus folded the letter.
“I don’t know.””
Celeste stared at him.
“You’re lying.””
Marcus looked at her.
“No.””
“You know something.””
“I know Naomi was afraid.””
“Of who?””
Marcus looked down.
“I don’t know.””
Darius stepped closer.
“Then why hide the letter?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Because I thought if the person who betrayed her knew I had it…”
He looked at Amara.
“They would come after her.””
Darius nodded slowly.
“That’s exactly what’s happening now.””
The truth was becoming impossible to ignore.
Someone had access to Amara’s home.
Someone knew about the photograph.
Someone knew about Naomi’s secrets.
Someone close enough to watch.
Amara hugged herself.
“My mom knew someone would hurt me.””
Celeste looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
The question was almost too painful.
Because the answer was simple.
She had been a child.
Celeste stepped closer.
“Because she wanted you to have a normal life.””
Amara looked at her.
“A normal life without knowing her?””
Celeste looked away.
“I know.””
The words were small.
“I know what she took from you.””
Amara shook her head.
“No.””
Celeste looked surprised.
“What?””
“She didn’t take anything.””
The room went quiet.
Amara held the photograph.
“She gave me this.””
Her fingers touched the worn paper.
“She left me something.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“I just wish everyone had stopped hiding the rest.””
Celeste broke.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just a quiet moment where years of guilt finally became too heavy.
She sat down.
“I promised her.””
Darius looked at her.
“Promised what?””
Celeste stared at the floor.
“That I would protect you.””
Amara looked at her.
“You failed.””
The words were honest.
And they hurt.
Celeste nodded.
“Yes.””
No excuses.
No defense.
“I did.””
Marcus looked away.
Because he knew what it felt like to carry that same guilt.
Then Darius’s radio crackled.
A security officer’s voice came through.
“Darius, we found something.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
“A vehicle outside.””
“Whose?””
A pause.
Then:
“Registered to Victor Hill.””
Marcus went completely still.
“No.””
Darius looked at him.
“You said he wasn’t here.””
“He shouldn’t be.””
The officer continued.
“There’s something else.””
Darius pressed the radio.
“What?””
“We found a bag in the vehicle.””
“What kind of bag?””
Another pause.
“A child’s backpack.””
Amara froze.
“My backpack?””
Celeste stood immediately.
“What?””
The officer continued.
“It has her name on it.””
The room went silent.
Amara looked terrified.
“But my backpack is at home.””
Darius turned toward the entrance.
Nobody needed to say what they were thinking.
Someone had been inside her house.
Someone had taken her things.
Someone wanted them to know.
Darius grabbed his jacket.
“Stay here.””
Amara immediately grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked down.
“I need answers.””
Darius softened.
“I know.””
“I’m tired of waiting.””
The words stopped him.
She looked at him.
“My whole life, people leave and don’t explain.””
Darius looked at Celeste.
Then Marcus.
Then back at Amara.
Finally, he nodded.
“Okay.””
Celeste stepped forward.
“She shouldn’t go.””
Darius looked at her.
“Neither should you.””
The words surprised her.
“You’re coming.””
Celeste looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because whoever did this wants you afraid.””
He glanced at the photograph.
“And because Naomi trusted you with something.””
The group moved toward the exit.
But before they reached the doors, Amara stopped.
She looked back at the photograph on the table.
Something caught her eye.
A small detail.
Something nobody had noticed.
She walked back.
“What?””
Everyone turned.
Amara pointed at the picture.
“Wait.””
Darius came closer.
“What did you see?””
She touched the corner.
“There’s writing here.””
Celeste looked.
The old photograph had a faded mark on the back.
Not the message.
Not Naomi’s handwriting.
Something else.
A date.
And a name.
Darius leaned closer.
The name made Marcus step back.
Because it wasn’t Victor.
It wasn’t Naomi.
It wasn’t Celeste.
It was someone nobody had mentioned.
Someone who had been in their lives the entire time.
Amara whispered:
“Who is this?””
Celeste stared at the name.
Her face went pale.
Because the person written on the photograph was the one person she believed had never been part of the secret.
Her own husband.
May you like
And beneath his name was a date.
The night Naomi disappeared.
