Chapter 5: The Night Naomi Vanished
Nobody spoke after Darius showed them the message.
The wedding guests had become silent witnesses to a story they were never supposed to hear.
Celeste stared at the phone.
Her fingers trembled.
“You know who sent it,” Darius said.
She didn’t answer.
“Celeste.””
Her eyes slowly lifted.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
She looked at Amara.
The little girl was watching her with the same eyes as Naomi.
That was the part that hurt the most.
Not the photograph.
Not Marcus.
Not the years of secrets.
The eyes.
Because every time Celeste looked at Amara, she saw the friend she had failed.
“It was Victor.””
Marcus’s face changed.
Darius noticed.
“You know that name.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
Celeste swallowed.
“He was Naomi’s brother.””
Amara frowned.
“My uncle?””
Nobody answered immediately.
That silence told her enough.
Darius looked at Marcus.
“And he’s dangerous?””
Marcus looked toward the entrance.
“He’s worse.””
The room seemed colder.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at Amara.
“It means he knows how to make people believe he’s the victim.””
Celeste sat down slowly.
For the first time all night, she looked exhausted.
Not wealthy.
Not powerful.
Just tired.
Darius pulled a chair closer.
“Start from the beginning.””
Celeste stared at the photograph.
At Naomi’s smile.
“At first, everything was perfect.””
Her voice became quieter.
“Naomi and I met when we were nineteen. We were completely different.””
A small, sad smile appeared.
“She was fearless. I was careful.””
Amara listened.
“She believed everyone deserved a second chance. Even people who hurt her.””
Marcus looked away.
Because he knew where the story was going.
Celeste continued.
“When Naomi met Marcus, she thought she had found the person who understood her.””
Amara looked at Marcus.
“And you did?””
Marcus nodded.
“I loved her.””
The answer was immediate.
Real.
Celeste noticed.
“I knew he loved her.””
She looked down.
“But I also knew something was wrong.””
“What?””
Celeste hesitated.
“Victor.””
The name alone carried weight.
“He always controlled Naomi. Where she went. Who she talked to. What decisions she made.””
Marcus spoke quietly.
“He told everyone he was protecting his sister.””
“But he wasn’t,” Celeste said.
Darius leaned forward.
“What happened?””
Celeste looked at Amara.
“Naomi found out something about him.””
“What?””
Celeste’s eyes moved toward Marcus.
“That he had been hiding money. A lot of money.””
Marcus nodded.
“And when Naomi threatened to expose him…”
“He threatened her,” Celeste finished.
Amara hugged herself.
“My mom was scared?””
Celeste looked at her.
“Yes.””
“But she didn’t leave?””
Celeste shook her head.
“No.””
A tear moved down her cheek.
“She stayed because of you.””
Amara’s face changed.
“Me?””
“She wanted to make sure you were safe.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Naomi was planning to leave with you.””
The room went silent.
“But she never did,” Amara whispered.
Marcus looked down.
“No.””
Darius asked the question everyone feared.
“Why?””
Celeste closed her eyes.
“Because the night she was supposed to leave…”
Her voice broke.
“Someone found out.””
A long silence followed.
“What happened that night?”” Darius asked.
Celeste looked at the photograph.
“The three of us met.””
“The three of you?””
“Naomi, Marcus, and me.””
Marcus nodded.
“We were supposed to help her disappear.””
Amara’s eyes widened.
“You were helping my mom?””
“Yes,” Celeste whispered.
“Then why does everyone think she disappeared?””
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was painful.
Celeste looked at her hands.
“Because after that night…”
She stopped.
Darius waited.
“What?””
Celeste looked toward the doors.
“Naomi was gone.””
Amara whispered:
“Gone where?””
Celeste looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus suddenly spoke.
“That’s not true.””
Everyone looked at him.
Celeste’s face tightened.
“Don’t.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You know what happened.””
“No.””
“You were there.””
Celeste’s eyes filled with anger.
“And so were you.””
The accusation shocked everyone.
Marcus went quiet.
Darius looked between them.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Neither answered.
Then Amara spoke.
Her voice was barely audible.
“My mom gave Celeste the other half of the picture.””
Celeste looked at her.
“What?””
Amara held the photograph.
“She trusted you with it.””
Celeste froze.
“How do you know?””
“Because she wrote something else.””
Amara reached into her pocket.
There was another folded piece of paper.
Celeste stared.
“What does it say?””
Amara unfolded it.
And read the faded handwriting.
“‘If anything happens to me, trust Celeste. She knows where I hid the truth.’”
Celeste stopped moving.
Marcus looked at her.
Darius looked at her.
Amara looked at her.
All waiting.
Because suddenly the question wasn’t whether Celeste knew Naomi.

The question was:
What truth had Naomi trusted Celeste to protect?
