Chapter 14: The Truth Naomi Left Behind
The box was hidden beneath the floor.
Not in Celeste’s house.
Not in some secret location.
But beneath the old foundation of Naomi’s childhood home.
A place Celeste had not visited in nine years.
A place she thought had disappeared from her life.
But Naomi had planned everything.
She always had.
Darius stood outside the abandoned house while Marcus, Celeste, Evelyn, and Amara waited behind him.
The night was quiet.
Too quiet.
“You’re sure this is where it is?”” Darius asked.
Celeste held the key.
“Yes.””
“How?””
Evelyn answered.
“Because Naomi told me.””
Everyone looked at her.
Celeste’s expression hardened.
“You knew?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She asked me to keep the secret.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Evelyn looked ashamed.
“Because Daniel was listening.””
That sentence stopped everyone.
“Listening?””
Evelyn nodded.
“He monitored everyone around him.””
Marcus looked disgusted.
“He controlled all of us.””
“Yes.””
Amara looked at Celeste.
“Did my mom know she was going to die?””
Nobody answered.
Finally, Celeste spoke.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“She thought she had more time.””
They entered the house.
The wooden floor creaked beneath their feet.
Dust covered everything.
But beneath the decay was a life that had once existed.
A family.
A friendship.
A future.
Celeste stopped in the hallway.
“She used to sing here.””
Amara looked at her.
“My mom?””
Celeste nodded.
“When she cooked.””
A small smile appeared.
“She was terrible.””
Amara laughed quietly.
For the first time that night.
A real laugh.
“She couldn’t sing?””
“She sounded like someone fighting a vacuum cleaner.””
Even Marcus smiled.
For a moment, the pain became lighter.
Then Darius found the hidden entrance.
A loose floorboard.
Underneath was a small metal box.
Celeste inserted the key.
It opened.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
A flash drive.
And one final letter.
Amara reached for it.
“Is it for me?””
Celeste nodded.
“Yes.””
Amara opened it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Her mother’s.
*My beautiful girl,*
Everyone became quiet.
*If you are reading this, then I failed to give you the childhood I wanted.*
Amara covered her mouth.
*But I need you to know something. I never left because I stopped loving you.*
A tear fell.
*I left because loving you meant keeping you alive.*
Celeste looked away.
Marcus wiped his eyes.
Darius remained silent.
Amara continued.
*There are people who will tell you I was afraid. They are right.*
*But fear was never stronger than my love for you.*
Amara pressed the letter against her chest.
Then she read the final part.
*The person who hurt me is someone you know. Someone who will pretend they are helping you.*
Everyone froze.
Again.
But this time there was more.
*They will use my disappearance as a way to make themselves look innocent.*
Darius looked up.
“This was written before she disappeared.””
“Yes,” Evelyn whispered.
Amara kept reading.
Then her hands started shaking.
“What?””
Celeste moved closer.
“What does it say?””
Amara looked up.
“She knew.””
“Knew what?””
Amara’s voice broke.
“She knew Daniel would come back.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at the documents.
“There’s more.””
He picked up the flash drive.
Darius checked it.
“Can you open it?””
Marcus nodded.
A video file appeared.
Recorded nine years earlier.
Naomi appeared on the screen.
Alive.
Holding baby pictures of Amara.
Everyone froze.
Celeste covered her mouth.
Naomi looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, then something happened.””
Her voice shook.
“But I need you to listen carefully.””
She looked around.
“As long as Daniel thinks he won, he will keep searching.””
The video paused.
Then Naomi said the sentence that changed everything.
“He is not alone.””
The screen flickered.
A second person appeared behind Naomi.
Someone standing in the doorway.
Someone watching her record.
Someone who had helped Daniel.
Amara stared.
Because she recognized the person.
Celeste whispered:
“No.””
Marcus stepped back.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Because the person in the video was someone they all trusted.
Someone who had spent years pretending to search for answers.
The video ended with Naomi’s final words:
“Don’t trust the person who brings you the truth.””
The screen went black.
And then—
A voice came from behind them.
“You finally found it.””
Everyone turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
Alive.
May you like
Celeste stopped breathing.
Because the man standing there was Daniel Whitmore.
