Chapter 7: The Message in the Photograph

The words on the screen stayed there.

Five simple words.

Five words that changed everything.

*Your mother never left alone.*

Nobody moved.

The reception hall felt frozen beneath the bright chandelier lights. The same room that had been filled with laughter hours earlier now felt like the walls themselves were listening.

Amara stared at the security monitor.

Her fingers tightened around Celeste’s hand.

“My mother…”

Her voice shook.

“What does that mean?””

Celeste looked at the screen.

She wanted to answer.

She wanted to tell Amara that everything was going to be okay.

But she had spent nine years lying to herself, and she knew one thing now.

Comfort built on a lie was just another kind of betrayal.

“I don’t know.””

Amara looked up.

“You don’t know?””

The pain in her voice was worse than anger.

Celeste looked away.

Darius noticed.

“Someone is playing with your emotions.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Darius looked at him.

“You think this is real?””

“I know it is.””

Marcus stepped toward the monitor.

“That message isn’t a threat.””

“Then what is it?””

“A warning.””

Darius studied him.

“From who?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

Celeste saw the hesitation.

“You think it’s Victor.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I know it’s Victor.””

A silence followed.

Amara looked between them.

“Why does he hate my mom?””

Nobody responded immediately.

That was the problem with secrets.

Every answer created three more questions.

Darius walked toward the security station.

“I need access to the camera footage.””

A wedding employee quickly stepped aside.

The monitor showed the hallway outside.

Empty.

Then the figure appeared.

Then disappeared.

Darius replayed it.

Again.

And again.

The person never showed their face.

But something bothered him.

The timing.

The confidence.

Whoever this was didn’t break in.

They wanted to be seen.

“They knew exactly where the camera was,” Darius said.

Marcus nodded.

“They always do.””

Darius looked at him.

“You’ve dealt with him before.””

Marcus didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Marcus looked at Amara.

“Because after Naomi disappeared, Victor came after me.””

Celeste’s face changed.

“You never told me that.””

“You never asked.””

“I spent years looking for answers.””

“And I spent years trying to survive.””

The words were sharp.

But there was something underneath them.

Pain.

Darius looked at both of them.

“Enough.””

They stopped.

“This isn’t about who suffered more.””

He pointed toward Amara.

“This is about her.””

Everyone looked at the child.

Amara wiped her eyes.

“I want the truth.””

Her voice was quiet.

But certain.

“I don’t care if it hurts.””

Celeste looked at her.

“Amara…”

“No.””

The little girl shook her head.

“My whole life, everyone decided what I could handle.””

She looked at the photograph.

“My mom. You. Him.””

She pointed toward Marcus.

“I’m tired of people protecting me from my own story.””

The room became silent.

Because she was right.

Celeste looked down.

Then slowly reached into her purse.

She removed the old key again.

“There’s something you need to see.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Celeste.””

She ignored him.

“This was Naomi’s.””

Amara looked at the key.

“She gave it to you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Celeste hesitated.

“The last night I saw her.””

Darius looked at her.

“You said she disappeared.””

Celeste nodded.

“I know.””

“Then tell us what happened.””

Celeste closed her eyes.

And for the first time, she stopped trying to protect herself.

“Naomi came to my house at midnight.””

The room disappeared around her.

“I remember she was holding a bag.””

“What was inside?”” Darius asked.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus frowned.

“You don’t know?””

“She wouldn’t tell me.””

Celeste looked at Amara.

“She was scared.””

Amara whispered:

“Of Victor?””

Celeste nodded.

“She said if anything happened, I couldn’t trust anyone.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Anyone?””

Celeste nodded.

“She included you.””

The words hit him.

Marcus stepped back.

“She thought I would hurt her?””

“No.””

Celeste looked at him.

“She thought someone could use you.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Darius asked:

“What happened after she left?””

Celeste’s face changed.

“She called me twenty minutes later.””

“And?””

“I answered.””

Her voice became smaller.

“But nobody spoke.””

A pause.

“I heard her breathing.””

Amara covered her mouth.

“Then what?””

Celeste looked at the photograph.

“I heard a man’s voice.””

Darius leaned forward.

“What did he say?””

Celeste swallowed.

“He said…”

Her eyes filled.

“He said, ‘You should have never trusted her.’”

The room went cold.

Marcus stared.

“Who?””

Celeste looked toward the monitor.

“I don’t know.””

Before anyone could ask more, the security alarm suddenly activated.

A loud sound echoed through the reception hall.

Guests screamed.

Darius grabbed his radio.

“Security team, check every entrance.””

The lights flickered again.

Then every screen in the room changed.

The wedding slideshow disappeared.

A single image appeared.

A photograph.

Not the old one.

A new one.

A picture of Amara sleeping.

Her bedroom.

Her home.

Her life.

The room erupted.

Amara stepped backward.

“That’s my room.””

Celeste looked horrified.

Darius stared at the screen.

Whoever sent this wasn’t watching from outside.

They had been watching Amara.

For a long time.

Then new words appeared.

*ASK CELeste WHERE SHE WAS THAT NIGHT.*

May you like

Darius turned slowly.

Toward Celeste.
