Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Smile

The phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Nobody moved.

The reception hall that had been filled with celebration now felt like a courtroom.

Everyone was waiting for someone to speak.

Darius looked at the screen again.

Marcus Hill.

He had heard the name before.

Not from gossip.

From security reports.

Marcus was a respected businessman with a reputation for disappearing whenever questions became uncomfortable.

Darius looked at Celeste.

“You know him.””

Celeste slowly lowered her hand.

“Yes.””

Amara stepped closer.

“Does he know my mom?””

Celeste looked at her.

The question hurt more than any accusation.

“I don’t know.””

But she did know something.

Darius could see it.

“You’re still hiding something.””

Celeste looked exhausted.

“You have no idea what you’re asking me to open.””

“Then open it.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You think the truth always fixes things?””

“No.””

Darius glanced at Amara.

“Sometimes it breaks them first.””

The words stayed in the air.

Celeste looked at the little girl standing beside him.

A child who had walked into a wedding searching for answers and found a secret instead.

Finally, Celeste sat down.

The elegant woman who had entered the reception like she owned the world suddenly looked like someone who had been carrying a weight for years.

“Her name was Naomi.””

Amara stopped breathing.

“My mother?””

Celeste nodded.

“Yes.””

The word was almost a whisper.

“My best friend.””

Darius folded his arms.

“Tell us what happened.””

Celeste looked toward the chandeliers above them.

The bright lights reflected in her eyes.

“She was the kindest person I ever knew.””

Amara listened carefully.

“She always believed people could change. Even when they didn’t deserve it.””

Celeste looked down.

“And that was what destroyed her.””

Amara frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Celeste opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

The old instinct returned.

Hide it.

Protect yourself.

Pretend it never happened.

But then she looked at the photograph.

Naomi’s smile stared back at her.

And Celeste knew she couldn’t run anymore.

“Naomi had a secret.””

Amara whispered:

“What secret?””

Celeste looked at her.

“A secret involving your father.””

The words hit like thunder.

Amara’s face changed.

“My father?””

Celeste nodded slowly.

Darius noticed.

“You never mentioned a father.””

Amara looked down.

“My mom said he left before I was born.””

Celeste closed her eyes.

“That’s what she wanted you to believe.””

Amara stepped back.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“No, my mom wouldn’t lie to me.””

Celeste immediately shook her head.

“She wasn’t trying to hurt you.””

“Then why?””

No answer.

The question hung there.

Why would a mother hide half of her own story?

Why would a woman leave behind a photograph with a message for someone else?

Why would that other person carry the missing half inside her purse for years?

Darius looked at the photograph again.

“Celeste, how did this picture get into your purse?””

The question changed everything.

Celeste looked at the purse.

Her face became unreadable.

“I don’t know.””

Darius stared.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I’m telling the truth.””

“Then someone put it there.””

Celeste went silent.

A chill moved through her.

Because there was only one possibility.

Someone wanted Amara to find her.

Someone wanted this moment to happen.

Before anyone could speak, the phone rang again.

This time Darius answered.

“Hello?””

Static.

Then a man’s voice.

Older.

Calm.

Dangerously calm.

“Is she there?””

Darius looked at Celeste.

“Who is this?””

The man ignored him.

“Is Amara there?””

The little girl’s eyes widened.

Celeste stood immediately.

“Hang up.””

Darius didn’t.

The voice continued.

“I knew she would find the picture eventually.””

Celeste’s face went pale.

“You shouldn’t be calling.””

The man laughed softly.

“I waited nine years.””

Darius tightened his grip on the phone.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m the reason Naomi is dead.””

Amara gasped.

Celeste closed her eyes.

The entire room seemed to disappear.

Darius looked at the phone.

“Say that again.””

But the voice changed.

The confidence was gone.

Now it sounded like a warning.

“Celeste, listen carefully.””

A pause.

“You need to tell her the truth before someone else does.””

The call ended.

Silence returned.

Amara looked up at Celeste.

“Who was that?””

Celeste stared at the blank phone screen.

Then at the photograph.

Then at the child standing in front of her.

And finally, she whispered the one thing she had spent years refusing to say.

“Your mother didn’t disappear.””

Darius watched her carefully.

“What are you saying?””

Celeste’s eyes filled with tears.

“She was running.””

Amara shook her head.

“Running from who?””

Celeste looked toward the entrance of the wedding hall.

The doors stood closed.

But everyone suddenly felt like someone was on the other side.

Waiting.

Watching.

Celeste reached for the photograph.

Her fingers trembled.

“From the person who was supposed to protect her.””

Darius looked at the door.

Then back at Celeste.

“Who?””

Celeste whispered a name.

May you like

A name that made Darius go completely still.

And before she could explain why that name mattered, the doors of the reception hall slowly began to open.
