Chapter 1: The Bruise Beneath the Celebration
“Olivia, why are you hiding your face?””
The question froze the entire engagement party.
For three hours, the ballroom at the Ashford Estate had been filled with champagne glasses, soft jazz, expensive laughter, and the kind of smiles people wore when they wanted the world to believe everything was perfect.
But Luca Moretti saw what everyone else ignored.
He saw the way Olivia kept her head lowered.
He saw how her long curls fell across the left side of her face like a curtain she refused to open.
Most people at the party knew Olivia as the quiet young woman who worked behind the scenes at Luca’s charity events. She wasn’t part of his wealthy circle. She didn’t wear designer dresses or carry herself like someone trying to impress a room.
She was the woman who remembered the names of elderly neighbors at community dinners.
The woman who stayed late cleaning after fundraising events even when nobody asked her to.
The woman who always smiled at children first.
But tonight, something was different.
Luca had built an empire from nothing. He knew how to read contracts, how to spot lies in business meetings, and how to tell when someone was hiding something.
And Olivia was hiding something.
“Olivia,” he said again, stepping closer.
“Look at me.””
Her hands tightened around the serving tray she held.
“I’m fine, Mr. Moretti.””
The words came out too quickly.
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“No. You’re not.””
Before Olivia could answer, Vanessa stepped between them.
The woman everyone had gathered to celebrate.
The woman wearing the diamond ring Luca had placed on her finger two weeks earlier.
Vanessa smiled politely, but Luca noticed the tension behind it.
“She’s embarrassed,” Vanessa said.
“Olivia is always so clumsy. She bumped into the storage room door earlier.””
A few guests laughed awkwardly.
The moment passed for everyone except Luca.
Because Vanessa had answered a question he never asked her.
He slowly turned toward his fiancée.
“I didn’t ask you.””
The room became silent.
Vanessa’s smile weakened.
“What?””
“I asked Olivia.””
The words weren’t loud, but everyone heard them.
Olivia looked down.
She wasn’t used to someone defending her. Not in public. Not against someone powerful.
Especially not against Vanessa.
Vanessa had always been careful.
That was what made her dangerous.
She never screamed when people were watching. She never lost control in front of strangers. She knew exactly when to smile, when to apologize, and when to make herself look like the victim.
But Olivia knew the truth.
She had seen the side of Vanessa that nobody else saw.
The side that appeared whenever they were alone.
“Olivia,” Luca said gently.
“Move your hair.””
She froze.
“Please.””
The room held its breath.
Slowly, Olivia lifted her hand.
Her fingers trembled as she pulled her curls away from her face.
A gasp moved through the crowd.
There was a dark bruise near her eye.
Not a small mark.
Not something caused by accidentally walking into a door.
Luca stared at it.
For the first time in years, the man who was always calm looked completely shaken.
His jaw tightened.
His eyes moved slowly toward Vanessa.
“Explain.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But Luca saw it.
The fear.
Then the anger.
“You’re really going to believe her over me?””
Nobody answered.
Because the question wasn’t about Olivia anymore.
It was about Vanessa.
Daniel, Luca’s longtime security director, stepped forward from the edge of the room.
He had been watching everything.
Daniel was the kind of man who spoke little because he noticed everything.
“Luca,” he said quietly.
Luca looked at him.
“What?””
“There’s something you need to see.””
Vanessa immediately turned.
“Daniel, this is a family matter.””
Daniel didn’t even look at her.
“No. It stopped being a family matter when someone got hurt.””
The ballroom went completely silent.
Daniel motioned toward one of the staff members near the entrance.
“Bring the footage.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Luca noticed.
And so did Olivia.
A few minutes later, Daniel connected the security footage to the large screen near the stage.
Nobody spoke.
The video showed the hallway outside the storage room.
Olivia appeared first, carrying supplies.
Then Vanessa walked toward her.
At first, they seemed to be talking.
Then Vanessa moved closer.
The room watched as Vanessa’s hand struck Olivia across the face.
A sharp sound echoed from the speakers.
Someone in the crowd covered their mouth.
Olivia lowered her head in the video.
Then Vanessa grabbed her arm and shoved her.
Olivia stumbled backward.
Her body hit the door frame.
The same door Vanessa claimed Olivia had walked into.
The lie collapsed in front of everyone.
Luca didn’t move.
He just stared at the screen.
The woman he planned to marry had hurt someone who couldn’t fight back.
But Daniel wasn’t finished.
“There’s more.””
The footage changed.
A man stood at the end of the hallway.
Holding a camera.
Watching.
Recording.
Luca looked confused.
“Who is that?””
Daniel looked directly at Vanessa.
“That’s what I was trying to find out.””
Vanessa’s face had gone pale.
“I don’t know him.””
Daniel reached into a folder.
“That’s interesting.””
He placed a printed photograph on the table.
“Because he was waiting outside before the party started.””
The room erupted into whispers.
Luca looked at Olivia.
She stood there silently, tears gathering in her eyes.
Not because she was weak.
Because she had spent too long carrying something alone.
“Why?”” Luca asked her.
Olivia looked down at the serving tray still in her hands.
Then she slowly placed it on a nearby table.
“I didn’t want to ruin your night.””
Luca frowned.
“My night?””
She swallowed.
“You were happy.””
Those two words hit him harder than he expected.
Because Luca suddenly realized something.
Olivia had been protecting him.
Even after being hurt.
Even after being humiliated.
She had still been thinking about everyone else.
And that was when she reached into the pocket of her apron.
May you like
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I need you to see this.””
