Chapter 8: The Woman Who Wanted Everything

Vanessa knew the truth was closing in.

She sat inside the penthouse she once imagined sharing with Luca, staring at the city lights below.

Everything she wanted was slipping away.

The marriage.

The reputation.

The future.

But she refused to accept that she had lost.

Not yet.

Her phone rang.

She answered immediately.

“Did you find anything?””

The voice on the other end was nervous.

“No.””

Vanessa stood.

“What do you mean no?””

“He has the recording.””

The room went silent.

For the first time all night, Vanessa looked afraid.

“The recording?””

“Yes.””

She closed her eyes.

Elena’s voice.

After all these years.

Still destroying everything.

“Where did they get it?””

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa walked toward the window.

She had spent years controlling the story.

She had convinced herself she was smarter than everyone else.

But she had forgotten one thing.

Truth had patience.

And now it was coming for her.

Luca met Vanessa one final time.

Not at home.

Not somewhere private.

At the office.

With Daniel present.

And cameras recording.

Vanessa noticed immediately.

“You think I’m a criminal?””

Luca looked at her.

“I think I don’t know you.””

That hurt her more.

She sat down.

“You really believe Elena over me?””

“No.””

Luca paused.

“I believe evidence.””

Vanessa looked away.

For the first time, she had no perfect response.

No carefully prepared speech.

No tears on command.

Only the reality she had avoided.

“I loved you.””

Luca stared at her.

“Maybe you did.””

The answer surprised her.

“But love doesn’t give you permission to destroy someone else’s life.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I was afraid.””

“So was Elena.””

That ended her argument.

Because it was true.

Two women had been afraid.

Only one chose to protect a child.

Luca leaned forward.

“Where is the missing page from Elena’s letter?””

Vanessa looked up.

“I don’t have it.””

“Then who does?””

Silence.

Again.

But this time Luca noticed something.

A reaction.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You know.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Vanessa.””

She whispered:

“Your father had it.””

Luca froze.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“The page was found after Elena died.””

The revelation opened another door.

Another secret.

Another person involved.

“My father was dead before Elena.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“But someone in his company had it.””

Luca stood.

“Who?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then said a name.

A name Luca knew.

A name he never expected.

“Anthony Vale.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Because he knew exactly who that was.

Luca looked at him.

“Who?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Your father’s former attorney.””

The room went silent.

Anthony Vale.

A man who had handled the Moretti family’s most private affairs.

A man who had access to everything.

Including Elena’s documents.

Including Marcus’s existence.

Luca looked toward the window.

Another betrayal.

Another person who had decided his life for him.

Vanessa watched him.

“I was trying to fix it.””

Luca turned.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“You were trying to control it.””

And for the first time, Vanessa had no answer.

Because she knew he was right.

The truth had finally reached Luca.

But it had also revealed something worse.

The person who buried Marcus’s existence was not finished.

And Anthony Vale had spent years making sure the secret stayed buried.
