Chapter 3: The Son Who Was Erased
Luca Moretti had faced angry investors, courtroom battles, and business rivals who spent years trying to destroy everything he built.
None of those moments prepared him for standing in the middle of his own engagement party, holding a photograph of a child who might be his son.
A child he never knew existed.
A child someone had tried to erase.
He looked at Vanessa.
The woman who had spent months sitting beside him at dinner tables, holding his hand at charity events, and telling everyone she wanted to build a future with him.
Now she stood frozen among broken glass and whispers.
“Tell me I’m wrong,” Luca said.
His voice was quiet.
That made it worse.
Vanessa had seen Luca angry before.
Anger was easy to fight.
But disappointment?
That was different.
“Luca, you’re letting these people manipulate you.””
She pointed toward Olivia.
“She shows up with an old picture and suddenly I’m the villain?””
Olivia lowered her eyes.
She had expected this.
People like Vanessa never admitted anything when there was still a chance to escape.
Daniel stepped forward.
“She didn’t just bring a picture.””
He placed the documents on the table.
“She brought evidence.””
Vanessa glanced down.
Her confidence faded.
Luca picked up the papers.
The first page showed payment transfers.
The name attached to the account wasn’t Vanessa’s.
But Daniel already knew what Luca was thinking.
“She used an outside account,” Daniel explained.
“Someone connected to one of her businesses.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You’re unbelievable.””
She looked around the room.
“You’re all standing here accusing me based on paperwork and a random photographer?””
Luca stared at her.
“No.””
He held up the photograph.
“I’m standing here because you lied.””
The words landed harder than any accusation.
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
That was the answer.
Luca felt something inside him break.
Because he remembered the woman Vanessa used to be.
Or at least the woman she showed him.
When they first met, she had seemed patient.
Understanding.
She knew about Elena.
She knew Luca still carried grief from losing his first wife.
Vanessa had told him she didn’t want to replace Elena.
She only wanted to help him heal.
Those words had mattered.
Now he wondered if they had only been carefully chosen.
“Who is the boy?”” Luca asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Olivia spoke.
“I think his name is Marcus.””
Luca turned.
“You know his name?””
Olivia nodded slowly.
“I found more than the photograph.””
She looked uncomfortable.
Like she had been carrying this information and was afraid of what it would do.
“There was a letter.””
Vanessa’s head snapped toward her.
“What letter?””
The reaction was immediate.
Everyone noticed.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew about it.””
Vanessa quickly recovered.
“I knew she was lying.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“You knew there was a letter.””
Vanessa looked away.
Luca stepped closer.
“Where is it?””
Olivia reached into her bag and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“It was hidden behind the photograph.””
Luca took it carefully.
His hands shook.
The handwriting was familiar.
Elena’s handwriting.
He knew it instantly.
The room disappeared.
The voices disappeared.
There was only the paper.
Only her words.
Only the woman he lost years ago speaking to him from the past.
Luca, if you are reading this, something happened before I had the courage to tell you.
His breathing became heavier.
He continued.
There is a child. His name is Marcus. He is ours.
Luca closed his eyes.
A painful breath escaped him.
A child.
His child.
I wanted to tell you sooner. I tried. But every time I looked at you, I saw how much pain you carried after losing your father, losing your business partner, losing everything you thought you knew. I was afraid this news would break you.
Luca swallowed.
Elena had known him better than anyone.
Too well.
Marcus was born before we understood how complicated things would become. I made arrangements to protect him because someone was threatening us.
Luca stopped reading.
“Someone?””
His eyes lifted.
“Who?””
Olivia shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel took the letter carefully.
“There’s another page missing.””
Luca looked at him.
“What?””
“The letter ends in the middle.””
Everyone looked toward Vanessa.
She stepped backward.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.””
But Luca saw it.
A small movement.
Her hand touching her necklace.
The same necklace she always wore.
The same necklace she never took off.
Daniel noticed too.
“You’re hiding something.””
Vanessa’s eyes hardened.
“Careful.””
Daniel didn’t react.
“I’ve been careful my entire career.””
The tension in the room grew.
Then an older woman near the back of the crowd spoke.
Everyone turned.
It was Mrs. Harris.
Luca’s former housekeeper.
She had worked for the Moretti family for over twenty years.
She looked at Luca with tears in her eyes.
“I knew.””
Luca froze.
“What?””
Mrs. Harris stepped forward.
“I knew about Marcus.””
The room erupted.
Luca stared at her.
“You knew I had a son?””
She looked devastated.
“I knew Elena had a baby.””
His voice became sharper.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Mrs. Harris cried quietly.
“Because Elena begged me not to.””
“Why?””
The older woman looked toward Vanessa.
And everyone understood.
“Because she was afraid.””
Luca turned slowly.
Toward Vanessa.
The woman he almost married.
“Afraid of you?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Mrs. Harris whispered:
“She was afraid of what you would do if you knew the truth too soon.””
Luca looked at the photographs.
The letter.
The evidence.
Everything that had been hidden from him.

And one question burned louder than anything else.
Where was his son?
