Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The party ended without anyone saying goodbye.
The decorations remained.
The flowers remained.
The untouched wedding invitations remained stacked neatly near the entrance.
But the celebration was gone.
Luca stood alone in the ballroom after everyone left.
For years, he had built his life around control.
Every decision had a purpose.
Every risk had been calculated.
But now he was standing in the ruins of a truth that had been hidden from him for nearly a decade.
His son was alive.
And he had missed every birthday.
Every first step.
Every childhood memory.
Every moment a father was supposed to protect.
The guilt was heavier than anger.
Daniel found him staring at the photograph.
“You okay?””
Luca laughed softly.
It wasn’t happiness.
“No.””
Daniel nodded.
“I figured.””
Luca looked at him.
“I spent years blaming myself for losing Elena.””
Daniel stayed quiet.
“I thought I wasn’t enough.””
His fingers tightened around the photograph.
“And now I find out there was a child out there who needed me.””
Daniel sat beside him.
“You didn’t know.””
“But someone did.””
That was the part Luca couldn’t escape.
Someone knew.
Someone made a choice.
Someone decided he didn’t deserve the truth.
And Vanessa was at the center of it.
The next morning, Luca went to the Moretti Foundation office.
He needed answers.
Olivia was already there.
She looked surprised when she saw him.
“I thought you would want space.””
“I don’t want space.””
Luca placed the photograph on the desk.
“I want the truth.””
Olivia nodded.
“I understand.””
For the first time, Luca noticed something he hadn’t before.
Olivia wasn’t just a witness.
She was scared too.
“You knew this could happen,” he said.
She hesitated.
“A little.””
“How much?””
She looked down.
“My mother knew Elena.””
Luca froze.
“What?””
“My mother worked at the clinic where Marcus was born.””
The room went silent.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know if it was true.””
Olivia took a breath.
“She only told me before she passed away. She said Elena came to her because she needed someone she could trust.””
Luca listened carefully.
“She said Elena was afraid someone close to you was watching her.””
“Who?””
Olivia looked at him.
“I think she meant Vanessa.””
Before Luca could answer, Daniel rushed into the office.
“We found him.””
Luca stood immediately.
“Marcus?””
Daniel nodded.
“We traced the photographer.””
He placed a folder on the desk.
“His name is Aaron Bell. He wasn’t just taking pictures.””
Luca opened the folder.
Inside were surveillance images.
Marcus.
Older now.
Living in another city.
Going to school.
Playing basketball.
Growing up without him.
Luca stared at the pictures.
A tear fell before he could stop it.
Daniel continued.
“Aaron was hired to locate Marcus before anyone else could.””
“By Vanessa?””
Daniel hesitated.
“There’s something else.””
He handed Luca another document.
A legal agreement.
A custody arrangement.
Signed years ago.
Luca read the name at the bottom.
Vanessa’s.
His face changed.
“She was involved.””
Daniel nodded.
“She knew about Marcus before she ever met you.””
Luca felt the room spin.
That meant every conversation.
Every moment.
Every promise.
Was built on a lie.
“She didn’t love me.””
Nobody answered.
Because they didn’t know.
But Luca already knew what hurt the most.
Vanessa didn’t just hide the truth.
She used it.
Olivia picked up the final photograph.
The one showing Marcus wearing Luca’s family ring.
“She was looking for him because she knew he was the only person who could expose her.””
Luca looked at her.
“Expose her for what?””
Olivia stared at the evidence.
Then she whispered:
“For taking something that belonged to Elena.””
Before Luca could ask another question, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A young voice spoke.
“Is this Luca Moretti?””
Luca’s heart stopped.
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Marcus.””
Luca couldn’t breathe.
The voice continued.
“I think you’re my father.””
May you like
And in that moment, every lie, every secret, and every betrayal became secondary to one truth.
His son had finally found him.
