Chapter 2: The Child in the Photograph

Nobody moved as Olivia opened the envelope.

The engagement party had transformed into something else.

It was no longer a celebration.

It was an investigation.

Luca watched as Olivia carefully removed an old photograph.

The edges were worn.

The image looked like it had been carried around for years.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Olivia, don’t.””

The warning in her voice was different now.

Not polite.

Not controlled.

Desperate.

Luca noticed.

“Let her speak.””

Olivia looked at the photograph in her hands.

For a moment, she looked like she was remembering something painful.

“This belonged to your first wife.””

The room became even quieter.

Luca’s expression changed.

Nobody mentioned Elena Moretti anymore.

His first wife had died years ago after a long illness.

The loss had nearly destroyed him.

People knew Luca as a successful businessman, but the people closest to him knew the truth.

After Elena died, he stopped celebrating birthdays.

He stopped attending family gatherings.

He buried himself in work because grief was easier when he had something to do.

“Where did you get that?”” Luca asked.

Olivia looked at him.

“I found it inside an old box that was delivered to the charity office.””

She turned the photograph around.

It showed Elena.

Smiling.

Alive.

Happy.

She was holding a little boy.

A child Luca had never seen before.

A child who looked to be around five years old.

A child whose eyes looked strangely familiar.

Luca stepped closer.

“What is this?””

Olivia took a breath.

“Vanessa hit me because she thought I had found this.””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“That is ridiculous.””

But her voice was breaking.

“You’re making things up because you want attention.””

Olivia looked at her.

“No.””

The answer was quiet.

But firm.

“She was scared.””

Luca stared at the photograph.

His mind raced.

Elena had never told him about a child.

Never.

Or had she tried?

Memories he had buried began forcing their way back.

A conversation from years ago.

Elena sitting across from him at their kitchen table.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Her saying she needed to tell him something.

And then the hospital called.

The moment disappeared forever.

Luca had convinced himself that grief had stolen pieces of his memory.

But now he wondered if there was something he had never been allowed to know.

Daniel stepped forward.

“I checked the photograph.””

He placed another image beside it.

“This was taken recently.””

Luca looked down.

His heart stopped.

It was the same boy.

Older now.

Standing outside a school.

Wearing a jacket.

And on his hand was a ring.

A small silver ring.

With a family symbol engraved into it.

Luca touched the photograph.

That ring.

He knew it.

It belonged to his family.

It had been passed down for generations.

His father gave it to him when he turned eighteen.

He had planned to give it to his future child one day.

But after Elena died, the ring disappeared.

He thought it was lost forever.

“Where did you get this?”” Luca whispered.

Daniel placed the camera from the mysterious man onto the table.

“I found his equipment.””

He opened the camera bag.

Inside were several photographs.

Pictures of the boy.

Pictures of Elena’s old neighborhood.

Pictures of Luca.

Pictures of Olivia.

Luca’s stomach tightened.

“This man wasn’t following Olivia.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked toward Vanessa.

“He was searching.””

The room became painfully still.

Olivia stepped closer to Luca.

Her eyes never left his.

“Vanessa hired him.””

Vanessa laughed suddenly.

But there was no humor in it.

“You’re insane.””

Daniel pulled out a document.

“Payment records.””

Vanessa stopped smiling.

“Messages between her and the photographer.””

Luca looked at Vanessa.

The woman he thought he knew looked like a stranger.

“Why?””

His voice was low.

“Why were you looking for my son?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The champagne glass in her hand began shaking.

Everyone watched as her fingers loosened.

The glass slipped.

It shattered against the marble floor.

And for the first time since the party began, Vanessa looked afraid.

Olivia looked at Luca and held up the second photograph.

“Your son is alive.””

Luca stared at the picture.

The child he never knew existed.

The child wearing his family ring.

The child someone had been desperately trying to find before he did.

Then Olivia said the words that changed everything.

“Vanessa wasn’t trying to hide a secret from you.””

May you like

She paused.

“She was trying to find him before you could.””
