Chapter 7: The Evidence Hidden in Elena’s Voice

Luca read the message three more times.

Each time, the words became heavier.

*Stop looking for the truth, or you’ll lose the only family you have left.*

It wasn’t just a threat.

It was a reminder.

Someone wanted him afraid.

For years, Luca believed money was the thing people wanted most from him.

The business.

The properties.

The reputation.

But now he understood something far more dangerous.

Some people didn’t want what you had.

They wanted control over what you loved.

And now Luca had something to lose.

His son.

Marcus watched his face carefully.

“Who sent it?””

“I don’t know.””

“But you have an idea.””

Luca didn’t answer.

Because they both knew.

There was only one person who had everything to gain from keeping the truth buried.

Vanessa.

Daniel arrived minutes later after Luca called him.

He looked at the message and immediately became serious.

“This changes things.””

“How?””

“Before, Vanessa was protecting a secret.””

Daniel handed the phone back.

“Now someone is actively trying to scare you away.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Do you think she would hurt me?””

Nobody answered right away.

That silence said enough.

Luca hated it.

Because Marcus was not supposed to know this kind of fear.

He was supposed to be worried about college, careers, relationships.

Not whether someone connected to his father wanted him gone.

“I’m sorry,” Luca said quietly.

Marcus looked at him.

“For what?””

“For everything you missed.””

The young man looked away.

For a moment, Luca expected anger.

Instead, Marcus sighed.

“I spent years being angry at a person I never met.””

Luca listened.

“My father.””

The word hit him.

Not because it hurt.

Because it was the first time Marcus had said it.

“And now you’re here,” Marcus continued.

“So I don’t know what to do with all that anger.””

Luca nodded slowly.

“You don’t have to forgive me.””

Marcus looked surprised.

“I wasn’t there.””

“No.””

Luca swallowed.

“But I should have been.””

The honesty changed something between them.

Not everything.

Not instantly.

But something.

The next morning, Daniel brought new information.

“We searched Aaron Bell’s files.””

Luca looked up.

“And?””

“He kept copies.””

“Of everything?””

Daniel nodded.

“He didn’t trust Vanessa.””

That didn’t surprise Luca.

People who worked for Vanessa eventually learned the same lesson.

She didn’t create partnerships.

She created leverage.

Daniel placed a laptop on the table.

“There’s video.””

Luca watched.

The footage showed Vanessa meeting Aaron months earlier.

The quality wasn’t perfect.

But the audio was clear.

Vanessa sat across from him at a restaurant.

“I need to know where he is.””

Aaron looked nervous.

“You already know enough.””

“No,” Vanessa replied.

“I need confirmation.””

“Why?””

The camera moved slightly.

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Because if Luca finds him, everything changes.””

Luca’s jaw tightened.

Aaron asked:

“Are you trying to stop him from meeting his son?””

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“I’m trying to protect my future.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“She knew.””

Luca nodded.

“Yes.””

“No.””

Marcus stood.

“She didn’t just know.””

His voice shook.

“She planned it.””

Luca watched his son walk away.

And he understood.

The pain wasn’t only his.

Marcus had spent his whole life discovering that people had made decisions about him without ever asking what he wanted.

That afternoon, Olivia came to Luca’s office.

She carried a small box.

“I found this.””

Luca looked at it.

“Where?””

“In the charity storage room.””

She opened it carefully.

Inside were old documents.

Letters.

Photographs.

A small voice recorder.

Luca frowned.

“What is that?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel picked it up.

“There’s a date.””

He turned it over.

The date was from the week before Elena died.

Luca’s heart sank.

“Play it.””

The recording began with static.

Then Elena’s voice filled the room.

Luca froze.

He hadn’t heard her voice in years.

Not in dreams.

Not in memories.

Actually heard it.

“Luca…”

The sound alone nearly broke him.

Elena sounded tired.

But strong.

“If you’re hearing this, I couldn’t tell you everything myself.””

Luca covered his mouth.

Marcus stood beside him.

Listening to his mother.

“I need you to know that Marcus was never a secret because I didn’t love you.””

A pause.

“I hid him because someone threatened to take him away.””

Luca looked at Daniel.

The room felt colder.

“Elena,” Luca whispered.

Her voice continued.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

Everyone listened.

“I thought Vanessa was helping me.””

Luca’s eyes widened.

“She told me she wanted to protect Marcus. She said she understood what it meant to lose family.””

The recording crackled.

Then Elena’s voice became quieter.

“But I discovered she wasn’t protecting him.””

A long pause.

“She was protecting herself.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

His mother had known.

She had been trying.

“I found documents,” Elena continued.

“Documents showing Vanessa had been planning this before my diagnosis became serious.””

Luca’s hands shook.

Then came the final words.

“If something happens to me, Luca, don’t trust anyone who tells you they are saving you.””

The recording ended.

Silence filled the room.

Nobody moved.

Then Marcus whispered:

“She knew she was running out of time.””

Luca looked at him.

“Yes.””

“And she still tried to protect me.””

Luca nodded.

“Yes.””

For years, he had believed he lost Elena.

Now he realized something worse.

May you like

She had been fighting alone.

And he never knew.
