Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Locked Jet
The voice coming from the private jet was impossible.
Nobody in the Hawthorne estate moved.
Nobody even breathed.
The recording echoed through the glass hall, carrying the voice of a man who had been missing for twenty years.
Adrian Hawthorne.
Malik stood frozen beside Malcolm, staring into the dark interior of the aircraft.
He had heard that voice before.
Not clearly.
Not in person.
But in old recordings his mother kept hidden at the bottom of a wooden box.
A man laughing.
A man saying his name.
A man promising he would come back.
“Malik?””
Malcolm’s voice broke through the silence.
The boy looked up.
The billionaire’s face no longer looked powerful.
He looked terrified.
“Have you heard that voice before?””
Malik didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes remained fixed on the open jet door.
“My mom used to play a recording,” he whispered.
Malcolm’s fingers tightened.
“What recording?””
“She said it was from my father.””
The room erupted.
Guests began whispering.
“His father?””
“Adrian had a child?””
“Is this some kind of trick?””
Malcolm ignored everyone.
“Your father’s name was Adrian?””
Malik nodded slowly.
“She told me never to say it.””
“Why?””
“Because she said people with money would always try to rewrite the truth.””
Those words hit Malcolm harder than any accusation.
Because twenty years ago, his own family had done exactly that.
They had rewritten Adrian’s life.
They had called him reckless.
They had called him selfish.
They had told the world he disappeared because he was unstable.
But Malcolm knew the truth.
Adrian had been trying to expose something.
Something inside the Hawthorne empire.
Something that had cost him everything.
A sudden movement came from the jet.
Everyone turned.
The interior lights flickered on one by one.
The aircraft looked untouched.
The leather seats were still perfect.
The wooden panels still shined.
A small table held an old glass of water that had somehow remained exactly where it was left.
It was like time had stopped inside.
Malcolm walked toward the entrance.
“Sir,” one of his security officers warned.
“We don’t know if it’s safe.””
Malcolm stopped.
For the first time that night, he looked like an old man.
Not a billionaire.
Not a CEO.
Just a father who had spent twenty years waiting.
“I lost my son once,” he said quietly.
His eyes moved to Malik.
“I’m not walking away from this.””
Then he stepped inside.
Malik followed.
The moment his foot touched the aircraft floor, another sound played.
A soft electronic beep.
The screen near the cockpit turned on.
A message appeared.
*IDENTITY CONFIRMED.*
Everyone stared.
A second message appeared.
*WELCOME, MALIK HAWTHORNE.*
The crowd outside gasped.
Malik looked confused.
“I don’t understand.””
Malcolm slowly approached the screen.
Neither did he.
Because Adrian had designed this system.
And Adrian never trusted anyone.
Not even his own father.
The jet had been locked because Adrian had programmed it that way.
Only Adrian could open it.
Or someone carrying his blood.
A woman from the crowd stepped closer.
Her name was Victoria Vale.
Malcolm’s longtime business partner.
The woman who had helped him build Hawthorne Industries into a global empire.
She stared at Malik with a strange expression.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“Malcolm,” she said.
Her voice was carefully controlled.
“You need to stop this.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Malcolm frowned.
“Excuse me?””
Victoria forced a smile.
“This child is confused. Someone could have planted that locket. The recording could have been prepared.””
Malik looked at her.
“Why would someone do that?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
That silence said more than words.
Malcolm noticed.
His eyes narrowed.
“Victoria.””
She looked away.
“What?””
“You knew about the jet.””
A pause.
Only a second.
But enough.
Malcolm saw it.
“You knew.””
Victoria crossed her arms.
“Of course I knew. Everyone close to you knew.””
“No.””
Malcolm stepped forward.
“Nobody knew how to open it.””
Victoria’s expression changed.
The room became colder.
Malik watched the adults around him.
He didn’t understand business.
He didn’t understand billionaires.
But he understood fear.
And Victoria was afraid.
A security officer entered the jet.
“Mr. Hawthorne, we found something.””
Malcolm turned.
“What?””
The officer held a small black case.
“It was hidden beneath the pilot’s seat.””
Malcolm took it.
There was a symbol engraved on the top.
The silver bird.
His hands trembled.
Because he recognized the case.
Adrian had carried one exactly like it.
Everywhere.
“What’s inside?”” someone asked.
Malcolm opened it.
Inside was a single envelope.
Old.
Yellowed.
His name was written across the front.
*FOR MY FATHER.*
The room went silent.
Malcolm stared at the handwriting.
He knew it.
He had seen it on birthday cards.
Letters.
Notes left on the kitchen counter.
His son’s handwriting.
“Open it,” Victoria said quickly.
Everyone looked at her.
She immediately corrected herself.
“I mean… if it belongs to you.””
Malcolm ignored her.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Only one page.
His eyes moved across the first sentence.
And then he stopped.
Malik noticed.
“What does it say?””
Malcolm didn’t answer.
His face had changed.
The sadness was gone.
Replaced by something else.
Anger.
Slowly, he lowered the letter.
“My son knew.””
“Knew what?”” Malik asked.
Malcolm looked at him.
“He knew he might not come back.””
The boy’s expression fell.
“But he didn’t leave me.””
Malcolm looked confused.
“What?””
“My mom always said that.””
Malik touched the locket.
“She said my father didn’t abandon us. She said he was trying to protect me.””
The billionaire looked back at the letter.
Then he read the next lines.
His voice became barely audible.
“Malcolm…”
He swallowed.
“‘If you are reading this, then something happened to me.’”
The room remained silent.
“‘I need you to understand one thing. I did not disappear because I wanted to. I disappeared because someone inside our family discovered the truth about Malik.’”
Malcolm stopped.
Everyone leaned closer.
Victoria’s face went pale.
“Keep reading,” she whispered.
Malcolm looked at her.
“Why?””
She said nothing.
His suspicion grew.
He continued.
“‘The people who destroyed my life will try to erase Malik’s identity. They will tell you he never existed. They will tell you I was lying.’”
Malcolm looked at the boy beside him.
A boy who had grown up without his father.
A boy who had lived in poverty while carrying the Hawthorne name.
“‘But if Malik reaches the jet one day, it means Amelia succeeded in keeping him safe.’”
Malik’s eyes filled with tears.
His mother.
She had done exactly what she promised.
“‘Father, you always believed money could protect our family.’”
Malcolm’s hand shook.
“‘But money is the reason we were in danger.’”
The billionaire stared at the words.
The words his son had written twenty years ago.
The words that could destroy everything he built.
Then came the final sentence.
The one that made the entire room go quiet.
“‘The person who tried to kill me is still standing beside you.’”
Malcolm slowly lifted his eyes.
Everyone followed his gaze.
Toward Victoria.
Her face had lost all color.
“That’s ridiculous,” she said.
But nobody believed the confidence in her voice anymore.
Malcolm folded the letter.
“Where is Adrian?””
Victoria stepped back.
“I don’t know.””
“You were with him the night he disappeared.””
“I told you everything I knew.””
“No.””
Malcolm’s voice hardened.
“You told me what you wanted me to believe.””
The room erupted again.
Guests moved away.
Security guards exchanged uncertain looks.
Malik stood between powerful strangers, holding his mother’s locket.
Then another sound came from inside the jet.
A hidden compartment opened beneath the control panel.
A small device slid out.
The screen displayed one message.
*VIDEO FILE RECOVERED.*
Everyone stared.
The file was dated twenty years ago.
The night Adrian vanished.
Malcolm reached toward it.
But before he could touch the screen, a voice came from the back of the room.
A voice nobody expected.
“Don’t play that video.””
Malcolm turned.
An elderly man stood near the entrance.
Someone who had worked for the Hawthorne family for thirty-five years.
The former head of security.
Thomas Reed.
His face was full of regret.
Because he knew what was inside.
Malcolm stared at him.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at Malik.
Then at the jet.
Then he whispered:
“Because that video doesn’t show how Adrian disappeared.””
A pause.
May you like
His voice dropped.
“It shows who made him disappear.””
