Chapter 5: The Truth Hidden Beneath the Hawthorne Estate
Nobody moved.
The final words from the hidden elevator hung in the air like a threat.
*The person who raised you has been lying about who killed him.*
Malik stood completely still.
His fingers tightened around the old silver locket.
For nine years, he had believed he understood his own story.
His mother had loved him.
His father had disappeared.
The world had taken everything from them.
But now, standing inside the largest house he had ever seen, surrounded by strangers who shared his blood, he realized something terrifying.
The truth was bigger than he imagined.
And someone had spent twenty years hiding it.
Malcolm looked at him.
The billionaire who had controlled companies, influenced industries, and commanded entire rooms suddenly looked lost.
“Malik…”
The boy didn’t look away from the elevator.
“Did my mother lie to me?””
The question was quiet.
But it hurt everyone who heard it.
Malcolm opened his mouth.
No answer came.
Because he didn’t know.
And Malik noticed.
“You don’t know either.””
Malcolm lowered his eyes.
“No.””
The honesty surprised him.
A powerful man admitting uncertainty was something nobody in that room expected.
“I don’t know,” Malcolm repeated.
He looked at Malik.
“But I promise we will find out.””
Victoria stood near the security guards, watching everything.
For the first time, she looked less like someone defending herself.
She looked like someone calculating her next move.
Thomas noticed.
“Don’t.””
Victoria turned.
“Don’t what?””
“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””
Her expression hardened.
“You still believe Adrian was telling the truth?””
Thomas looked toward the elevator.
“I believe my eyes.””
Victoria laughed softly.
“That’s exactly why you’re weak.””
The old man frowned.
“What?””
“You spent your whole life protecting this family because you wanted to believe it deserved protection.””
She looked around the estate.
“At some point, Thomas, you should have asked what you were protecting.””
Malcolm stepped forward.
“Enough games.””
Victoria looked at him.
“You want answers?””
She pointed toward the elevator.
“Then go down there.””
Nobody spoke.
“Open the vault.””
Malcolm stared.
“You know what’s inside?””
Victoria smiled.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked everyone.
Thomas whispered:
“How?””
Victoria didn’t respond.
Instead, she looked at Malik.
“Because your father wasn’t the only person who discovered the truth.””
Malik took a step back.
“What truth?””
Victoria looked at the hidden elevator.
“The truth about why Adrian disappeared.””
The room became colder.
Malcolm’s voice turned sharp.
“Victoria.””
She ignored him.
“Your father found something that changed everything.””
Malik stared.
“What?””
Victoria looked directly into his eyes.
“He found out that your family name was built on a lie.””
Malcolm’s expression darkened.
“My father built this company from nothing.””
Victoria smiled.
“That’s what everyone was told.””
The elevator lights flickered again.
Waiting.
Inviting.
Malcolm walked toward it.
“Open it.””
Thomas moved quickly.
“Sir, we need to be careful.””
“We’ve been careful for twenty years.””
Malcolm looked at him.
“Look where that got us.””
Nobody argued.
The elevator was large enough for only a few people.
Malcolm stepped inside first.
Then Malik.
Thomas followed.
Victoria remained outside.
Malcolm looked at her.
“You’re not coming?””
She smiled.
“Why would I?””
Everyone noticed.
The woman who knew about the vault suddenly had no interest in entering it.
That was not normal.
Malcolm looked at security.
“Keep her here.””
Victoria didn’t resist.
That worried Thomas more than anything.
The elevator doors closed.
The world above disappeared.
Malik stood silently beside Malcolm.
The walls were old stone.
Not modern.
Not luxurious.
Hidden.
A secret built underneath a mansion worth billions.
After a few seconds, Malik spoke.
“Did my father love me?””
Malcolm looked at him.
The question was so simple.
Yet it carried years of pain.
“Yes.””
The answer came immediately.
“How do you know?””
Malcolm looked down.
“Because I saw the way he looked at you in that photograph.””
Malik swallowed.
“He knew he might never see me again.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t he come back?””
Malcolm’s face tightened.
“I don’t know.””
The elevator continued downward.
Then Malcolm added quietly:
“But I spent twenty years blaming him.””
Malik looked at him.
“And now?””
The billionaire stared at the floor.
“Now I think I was wrong.””
The elevator stopped.
The doors opened.
A hidden room waited below the estate.
It was nothing like the mansion above.
No gold.
No expensive decorations.
Just stone walls, metal cabinets, and old files.
A place designed to protect secrets.
At the center stood a wooden table.
On it was a single object.
A photograph.
Malcolm picked it up.
His hands shook.
It showed three people.
Adrian.
Amelia.
And a baby.
Malik.
But behind them stood another person.
A person Malcolm recognized immediately.
His own father.
Malik noticed.
“Who is that?””
Malcolm didn’t answer.
Because the photograph made no sense.
His father had been dead before Malik was born.
Yet the image proved something impossible.
His father knew about Malik.
The date stamped on the corner was from twenty years ago.
Malcolm whispered:
“This can’t be.””
Thomas stepped closer.
“Sir?””
“My father was supposed to be in the hospital that day.””
Thomas looked at the photograph.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
Malcolm turned it over.
On the back, someone had written a message.
*THE HAWTHORNE LEGACY WAS NEVER WHAT YOU THOUGHT.*
Malik looked around.
“What does that mean?””
Before anyone answered, a hidden screen activated on the wall.
A video file appeared.
No date.
No name.
Just one word.
*ELIAS.*
Malcolm froze.
Thomas looked at him.
“Who is Elias?””
Malcolm didn’t answer.
Because he knew exactly who it was.
His younger brother.
The man everyone believed died thirty years ago.
The man whose existence had been erased from every Hawthorne record.
“My brother.””
Malik looked confused.
“You had another brother?””
Malcolm stared at the screen.
“No.””
A pause.
“Everyone told me I didn’t.””
The video began.
A man appeared.
Older.
Tired.
Sitting in a dark room.
Elias Hawthorne.
Malcolm stepped closer.
“Elias…”
The recording began.
“If you are watching this, then Adrian succeeded.””
Malcolm’s heart stopped.
Elias looked directly into the camera.
“Malcolm, I know you spent your life believing our family was built by our father.””
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“But you never asked what he had to destroy to build it.””
Malcolm watched silently.
Elias continued.
“The Hawthorne fortune was created from stolen research.””
Thomas looked shocked.
“What?””
“Your father took credit for discoveries that belonged to others. He erased names. Destroyed careers. Ruined lives.””
Malcolm shook his head.
“No.””
Elias continued.
“And when Adrian discovered the truth, he tried to expose it.””
Malik stepped closer.
“So my father disappeared because he found this?””
The video answered.
“Adrian was not killed because he was weak.””
Elias looked into the camera.
“He was targeted because he was honest.””
The screen flickered.
Then Elias said something that made Malcolm’s blood run cold.
“The person who betrayed Adrian was not Victoria.””
Everyone froze.
A new message appeared on the screen.
*FILE INTERRUPTED.*
Then another line appeared.
*REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED.*
Thomas looked toward the ceiling.
“Someone is inside the system.””
Malcolm grabbed the edge of the table.
“Who?””
The lights suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the vault.
Malik heard footsteps.
Not from above.
Not from the elevator.
Inside the room.
Someone else was there.
A voice whispered from the shadows:
“Malik.””
The boy froze.
Because he knew that voice.
He had heard it every night in his mother’s old recordings.
A voice he thought belonged only to the past.
The stranger stepped into the emergency light.
And Malik saw the face of the man everyone believed had vanished twenty years ago.
Adrian Hawthorne.
Older.
Scarred.
Alive.

And the first words he said were:
“Son, your mother was never the one who lied to you.””
