Chapter 6: The Father Who Never Left
Malik forgot how to breathe.
For nine years, he had imagined this moment.
Not exactly this.
Not in a hidden vault beneath a billionaire’s mansion.
Not surrounded by secrets, lies, and people who looked terrified.
But he had imagined meeting his father.
He had imagined a face.
A voice.
A hand reaching toward him.
He had imagined asking the question that lived inside him every night.
*Why did you leave me?*
Now the man was standing ten feet away.
Alive.
Older than the photograph.
A deep scar crossed his left cheek.
His hair was streaked with gray.
His clothes were simple, nothing like the expensive suits worn by the people upstairs.
He looked less like a billionaire’s son.
He looked like someone who had spent twenty years running.
Malik stared.
“You’re…”
His voice broke.
The man’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
Adrian Hawthorne took one slow step forward.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
Malik didn’t move.
“You’re my father.””
The words felt strange coming out loud.
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Malik’s anger finally caught up with his shock.
“You were alive?””
The question was quiet.
But it carried years of pain.
Adrian stopped.
“Yes.””
Malik’s face tightened.
“You were alive this whole time?””
Adrian looked down.
“I was.””
“Then why?””
The boy’s voice grew louder.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
Adrian had faced enemies.
Lawsuits.
Threats.
People who wanted him gone.
But nothing prepared him for the pain in his son’s voice.
“I tried.””
Malik shook his head.
“No.””
A tear slipped down his cheek.
“My mom said you were trying to protect me.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“She was right.””
“Then why did I grow up without you?””
The vault became silent.
Malcolm stood frozen nearby.
He had waited twenty years to see his son.
But now he realized something.
Adrian’s return was not a happy ending.
It was the beginning of a conversation that should have happened years ago.
Adrian looked at Malik.
“Because every time I came close, someone found me.””
Malik frowned.
“What?””
Adrian walked toward the table and picked up the old photograph.
“The night I disappeared, I discovered someone inside the Hawthorne company was selling information.””
Malcolm interrupted.
“You said it was family.””
Adrian looked at his father.
“It was.””
The word hit hard.
Malcolm swallowed.
“Who?””
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at the walls around them.
“This room was built by your father.””
Malcolm looked confused.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew one day someone would need to hide the truth.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Adrian.””
The old security chief looked emotional.
“You’re alive.””
Adrian nodded.
“I’m sorry, Thomas.””
The older man shook his head.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I should have protected you.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You protected Malik.””
Thomas looked toward the boy.
“I failed both of you.””
“No.””
Adrian’s voice was firm.
“You kept your promise.””
Malcolm looked between them.
“A promise?””
Adrian turned.
“To keep my son safe.””
The billionaire’s face changed.
“You knew?””
Adrian nodded.
“I knew Malik was alive.””
Malcolm stared.
“For twenty years?””
“Yes.””
The answer hurt more than anything else.
“You knew I was searching?””
Adrian looked away.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Adrian was silent.
Finally, he said:
“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.””
Malcolm’s expression hardened.
“You thought I would hurt him?””
“No.””
Adrian looked directly at him.
“I thought someone would use you to find him.””
The words landed heavily.
Because Malcolm knew.
For the first time, he understood.
His power had always been his greatest weakness.
Everyone knew where to find him.
Everyone knew how to manipulate him.
And if someone wanted Malik…
They would come through him.
Adrian walked toward the old files.
“There is something you need to know.””
He opened a metal cabinet.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Photos.
Records.
Names.
“All these years, everyone believed Victoria was the person who betrayed me.””
Malcolm looked toward the elevator.
“She wasn’t?””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
Thomas frowned.
“Then why did the system identify her?””
“Because she had access.””
Adrian pulled out a file.
“But access doesn’t mean control.””
He placed the file on the table.
Inside was a list of company executives.
One name was highlighted.
Malcolm read it.
Then froze.
“No.””
Adrian watched him.
“Yes.””
Malik looked between them.
“Who is it?””
Malcolm didn’t answer.
Adrian did.
“Your grandfather.””
The room went silent.
Malik frowned.
“But you said he died.””
Malcolm stared at the paper.
“He did.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“He disappeared.””
Thomas whispered:
“Like you.””
Adrian nodded.
“Exactly.””
The realization spread through the room.
Two generations.
Two disappearances.
One family secret.
Malcolm stepped back.
“My father was involved?””
Adrian looked at him.
“Your father created the system.””
“What system?””
“The system that erased people.””
The vault felt colder.
Adrian continued.
“He built Hawthorne Industries by taking ideas from brilliant people who had no power. Then he removed their names.””
Malcolm shook his head.
“I spent my entire life believing he was a genius.””
“He was.””
Adrian’s voice was calm.
“But he was also ruthless.””
Malik looked at the files.
“And you tried to expose him?””
“Yes.””
“Then someone tried to kill you.””
Adrian nodded.
“Someone tried.””
Malik noticed the words.
“Someone tried?””
Adrian looked at him.
“Because someone saved me.””
A sound came from above.
A faint alarm.
Everyone looked upward.
Thomas checked the security monitor.
His face changed.
“Someone breached the estate.””
Malcolm immediately turned.
“Who?””
Thomas stared at the screen.
“Security cameras are offline.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“They found us.””
Malik looked at him.
“Who?””
Adrian looked toward the elevator.
The answer came quietly.
“The people who spent twenty years making sure you never knew I existed.””
Suddenly, the elevator doors slammed shut.
The control panel flashed.
*VAULT LOCKDOWN INITIATED.*
Thomas rushed to it.
“We’re trapped.””
Adrian looked at the screen.
“No.””
Malcolm noticed his expression.
“What?””
Adrian pointed.
The screen showed a message.
Not from the security system.
From someone outside.
A single sentence appeared:
*YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED DEAD.*
Malik stepped closer.
His heart raced.
Because beneath the message was a name.
The name of the person who had sent it.
Malcolm read it.
Then his face turned pale.
“No…”
Adrian looked at his father.
“Who is it?””
Malcolm could barely speak.
“The person who has been running Hawthorne Industries for the last twenty years.””
A pause.
“The person everyone trusted.””
The screen refreshed.
A photograph appeared.
And Malik recognized the face.
Because he had seen her only hours ago.
The woman who smiled while pretending to help them.
Victoria Vale.
May you like
But beneath her picture was another name.
*VICTORIA HAWTHORNE.*
