Chapter 4: The Woman Who Held the Missing Key
Victoria Vale ran.
Not walked.
Not rushed.
Ran.
Her heels struck the marble floor as she pushed past stunned guests and headed toward the side entrance of the Hawthorne estate.
For twenty years, she had controlled her expression.
She had sat beside presidents, negotiated billion-dollar deals, and faced angry investors without showing a single crack.
But now everyone had seen it.
Fear.
Malcolm saw it.
Thomas saw it.
And most importantly, Malik saw it.
The woman who had acted like she had no idea what was happening was the only person whose name appeared on the hidden security system.
“Stop her!”” Malcolm shouted.
Two security guards moved forward.
Victoria spun around.
“Don’t touch me.””
Her voice was no longer calm.
It was sharp.
Dangerous.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
Malcolm walked toward her slowly.
“No.””
His eyes were cold.
“I think I finally do.””
The guards blocked the exit.
Victoria looked around the room.
Hundreds of people were watching.
The same people who had spent the evening praising her success were now staring at her like a stranger.
She lowered her voice.
“Malcolm, you need to think carefully.””
“About what?””
“About who benefits from destroying your family.””
A strange silence followed.
Victoria looked at Malik.
“Do you really think a random boy appears after twenty years with a convenient story, and everyone should believe him?””
Malik flinched.
The words hurt.
Not because they were cruel.
Because they sounded like the questions he had secretly asked himself.
What if his mother was wrong?
What if he wasn’t special?
What if he really was just a poor kid who had accidentally stepped into a world that wasn’t his?
Malcolm noticed.
He stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Victoria looked at him.
“You don’t know this child.””
“No.””
Malcolm glanced at Malik.
“But I know my son.””
The words silenced her.
Malcolm pointed toward the jet.
“Adrian built that system. He created security measures nobody could break.””
Victoria’s face tightened.
“And?””
“And the system recognized Malik.””
A pause.
“Not you.””
Victoria looked away.
Just for a second.
But it was enough.
Thomas stepped closer.
“Twenty years ago, Adrian told me someone inside the company was using private access codes.””
Victoria’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re accusing me?””
“I’m telling the truth.””
Thomas looked at Malcolm.
“I should have done it sooner.””
Malcolm said nothing.
The old security chief reached into his coat and pulled out a small device.
A worn metal recorder.
“I kept this because I was afraid.””
Malcolm stared.
“What is that?””
“Something Adrian gave me.””
Thomas looked at Malik.
“He said if Malik ever returned, I had to give this to him.””
Malik stepped forward.
“To me?””
Thomas nodded.
The boy hesitated.
Everyone was suddenly giving him things.
Secrets.
Responsibilities.
A family he never knew existed.
He looked at Malcolm.
“What is happening?””
For a moment, the billionaire had no answer.
Because how could he explain that a child who had grown up struggling to afford food was now standing at the center of a war over an empire?
Malcolm crouched down.
For the first time, he lowered himself to Malik’s height.
“I don’t know yet.””
His voice softened.
“But I promise you one thing.””
Malik looked at him.
“No one is taking you anywhere.””
The boy stared at him.
Those words were simple.
But they were the words he had waited his whole life to hear.
Thomas handed him the recorder.
Malik pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then Adrian’s voice appeared.
“Thomas, if you’re playing this, then Malik is there.””
Malik froze.
His father’s voice again.
The room disappeared.
There was only that sound.
That connection to a man he never met.
Adrian continued.
“First, tell him I’m sorry.””
Malik swallowed.
“Tell him I tried.””
The recording paused.
Then:
“Tell my son I never stopped looking for a way back.””
Malik looked down.
A tear fell onto the floor.
He quickly wiped it away.
He didn’t want anyone to see.
But Malcolm did.
And for the first time that night, the billionaire looked less like a powerful businessman and more like a grandfather who had lost too much.
The recording continued.
“Thomas, the person behind this has access to everything.””
A pause.
“They know about the vault.””
Everyone looked toward the floor.
The hidden vault beneath the estate.
“They know about Malik.””
Adrian’s voice became quieter.
“And they know the only way to protect themselves is to make sure he never learns the truth.””
Victoria interrupted.
“This is ridiculous.””
Everyone turned.
She had stopped trying to escape.
Instead, she stood there with a strange calmness.
“You’re all listening to a dead man’s conspiracy.””
Thomas stared at her.
“You’re afraid.””
Victoria smiled.
“No.””
She looked at Malik.
“I’m worried.””
Malik frowned.
“Why?””
Victoria walked closer.
Security immediately moved between them.
She stopped.
Then she said:
“Because Adrian lied to everyone.””
Malcolm’s expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Victoria looked at the jet.
“You think he was a hero?””
She laughed softly.
“You don’t know what he found.””
Thomas shook his head.
“Don’t do this.””
“No, Thomas.””
Victoria’s eyes hardened.
“It’s time someone told the truth.””
She looked directly at Malcolm.
“Your son wasn’t investigating a crime.””
“Then what was he doing?””
Victoria took a breath.
“He was trying to uncover why your family built this company in the first place.””
Malcolm frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at Malik.
“Your father discovered something about the Hawthorne name.””
“What?””
“That everything your grandfather built was based on a secret.””
The room became quiet.
Malcolm’s face darkened.
“My father died thirty years ago.””
“Yes.””
Victoria smiled slightly.
“And he took that secret with him.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to her.””
“Why?””
Victoria turned.
“Because you’re afraid they’ll know what you helped hide.””
Thomas went pale.
Malcolm looked between them.
“What is she talking about?””
Thomas remained silent.
That silence was worse than an answer.
Malcolm’s voice dropped.
“Thomas.””
The old man closed his eyes.
“I made mistakes.””
Malcolm stared.
“What mistakes?””
Before Thomas could answer, the estate suddenly shook.
A deep mechanical sound came from beneath the floor.
Everyone froze.
The lights flickered.
Then the marble tiles near the center of the hall began separating.
A hidden elevator slowly rose from beneath the ground.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because the Hawthorne estate had just revealed something that had been hidden for decades.
A secret entrance.
Beneath the billionaire’s own home.
Malcolm looked at Thomas.
“You said you didn’t know where the vault was.””
Thomas looked terrified.
“I didn’t.””
The elevator doors opened.
Inside was darkness.
Then a small light turned on.
A single object sat in the center.
A wooden box.
With the silver bird symbol carved into the top.
Malik’s hand moved toward his locket.
The same symbol.
The same bird.
A voice came from the elevator speaker.
Not Adrian.
Not Thomas.
A woman’s voice.
An old recording.
“Only a Hawthorne by blood can enter.””
Everyone looked at Malik.
The voice continued.
“And only the child of Adrian Hawthorne can hear the final message.””
Malcolm slowly turned toward his grandson.
“Malik…”
The boy stared at the hidden elevator.
At the box waiting inside.
Then the speaker delivered the final sentence:
“Malik, if you are hearing this, it means your father failed to protect you.””
A pause.
May you like
The lights inside the elevator flickered.
“And it means the person who raised you has been lying about who killed him.””
