Chapter 8: The Truth Adrian Buried

The hidden passage was narrow.

Dark.

Cold.

Malik ran between the stone walls, holding Malcolm’s hand while Adrian followed behind them.

For the first time in his life, Malik was running toward something.

Not away.

Behind him were people who wanted him because of his name.

Ahead of him was the father he had spent years wondering about.

But the questions inside him were louder than the footsteps chasing them.

“Dad?””

The word escaped before Malik could stop it.

Adrian froze for half a second.

Nobody had ever called him that.

Not in twenty years.

Not from his own son.

He turned.

Malik looked embarrassed.

“I mean…”

Adrian smiled sadly.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“You don’t have to apologize.””

Malik looked down.

“I just don’t know what to call you.””

Adrian’s eyes softened.

“Whatever feels right.””

The answer was simple.

But it meant everything.

A loud noise echoed behind them.

Thomas looked back.

“They’re getting through.””

Malcolm continued forward.

“There has to be another exit.””

Adrian nodded.

“There is.””

Malcolm looked at him.

“You built this?””

“No.””

Adrian touched the stone wall.

“My grandfather did.””

Malcolm stopped.

“Your grandfather?””

Adrian continued walking.

“The first Hawthorne.””

Malik looked confused.

“I thought your father built everything.””

Adrian glanced at him.

“That’s what everyone was supposed to believe.””

The passage opened into a hidden room.

Unlike the vault, this place looked personal.

Not like a storage room.

Not like a bunker.

There were old books.

Handwritten notes.

Family photographs.

A wooden desk sat in the center.

Malcolm walked toward it slowly.

He recognized the handwriting on the papers.

His father’s.

“My entire life…”

He touched the desk.

“I thought I knew him.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You knew the version he wanted you to know.””

Malcolm picked up a letter.

“What happened to him?””

Adrian hesitated.

Then:

“He disappeared because he regretted everything.””

Thomas frowned.

“Regretted?””

Adrian nodded.

“Near the end of his life, he realized what he had built.””

Malcolm looked at the letter.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because he believed you were too loyal to the name.””

The words hurt.

But Malcolm knew they were true.

He had spent decades protecting Hawthorne Industries.

Protecting the family image.

Protecting a legacy.

He had never stopped to ask whether the legacy deserved protection.

Malik walked toward a shelf.

There were dozens of photographs.

One caught his attention.

A young Adrian.

A young Amelia.

And another man standing beside them.

“Who is he?””

Adrian looked.

His expression changed.

“That’s Daniel.””

Malik waited.

“My best friend.””

“What happened to him?””

Adrian looked away.

“He helped me find the truth.””

Malcolm noticed something.

“Then why isn’t he in any family records?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because the answer was painful.

“Because he disappeared too.””

The room became silent.

Malik looked at the photographs.

“How many people disappeared because of this?””

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Too many.””

A sound came from the passage.

Footsteps.

Closer.

Thomas moved toward the door.

“We need to go.””

Adrian nodded.

He opened a hidden drawer beneath the desk.

Inside was a small metal box.

He handed it to Malik.

The boy looked surprised.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother trusted you with the truth.””

Malik opened the box.

Inside was a USB drive.

A small key.

And a letter.

His name was written on it.

*For Malik.*

His hands shook.

“My mom wrote this?””

Adrian nodded.

“She wrote it before she died.””

Malik stared.

“You had it?””

Adrian looked away.

“No.””

The answer confused him.

“Then how?””

“Because she sent it to me.””

Malik froze.

“You talked to her?””

Adrian’s expression broke.

“One last time.””

The boy’s eyes filled with tears.

“When?””

“Three days before…”

Adrian stopped.

Malik understood.

Before she died.

“Why didn’t you come?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Because she made me promise.””

“What promise?””

Adrian’s voice became quiet.

“She told me if I came back too soon, they would find you.””

Malik held the letter tightly.

“My mom knew you were alive?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Adrian looked at his son.

“Because she wanted you to have a normal life.””

Malik laughed softly.

A sad sound.

“Normal?””

Adrian smiled sadly.

“I know.””

For a moment, father and son simply looked at each other.

Twenty years stolen.

Nine years lost.

A lifetime of missing pieces.

Then Malcolm spoke.

“Open the letter.””

Malik looked down.

Slowly, he unfolded it.

The handwriting was his mother’s.

His chest tightened.

*My little Malik,*

*If you are reading this, then you finally found the silver bird.*

He stopped.

Adrian looked away.

Malik continued.

*I wish I could be there when you learn the truth. I wish I could hold your hand and explain everything.*

His vision blurred.

*Your father never abandoned us. He sacrificed everything for you.*

Malik looked at Adrian.

Then back at the letter.

*But there is something I need you to understand. The Hawthorne family is not just a name. It is a promise.*

A pause.

*A promise to fix what was broken before you were born.*

Malcolm listened carefully.

*Your grandfather made mistakes. Your father tried to correct them. And now the choice belongs to you.*

Malik frowned.

A choice?

The letter continued.

*Do not choose revenge. Choose the truth.*

The words hit him.

Because everyone around him wanted something.

Victoria wanted power.

The family wanted answers.

The people chasing them wanted control.

But his mother wanted something else.

Truth.

Malik turned the page.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“What?””

Adrian stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Malik looked up.

“There’s another name.””

He handed the letter over.

At the bottom was a sentence.

*The person who knows everything is not Victoria.*

Malcolm took the paper.

“What?””

Beneath it was another name.

A name that made Thomas go pale.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Thomas shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Adrian grabbed the letter.

His expression changed.

Because he knew the name.

Malcolm whispered:

“Who is it?””

Thomas looked toward the door.

Then quietly said:

“The person who helped raise Adrian.””

A pause.

“The person who taught him everything.””

Malik looked confused.

“Who?””

Thomas answered:

“Your grandmother.””

Silence.

Malcolm stared.

“My mother died when I was twenty.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

His voice trembled.

“She disappeared.””

Adrian looked at the letter again.

“She’s alive.””

A sudden noise interrupted them.

The hidden room lights turned red.

A speaker activated.

Victoria’s voice filled the room.

“You found the letter.””

Everyone froze.

Adrian stepped toward the speaker.

“Victoria.””

She laughed softly.

“You always were good at hiding things, Adrian.””

Malcolm looked around.

“How are you accessing this room?””

No answer.

Then Victoria spoke again.

“Because this house was never yours.””

A pause.

“It belonged to my father.””

Malcolm’s face changed.

“What did you say?””

Victoria continued.

“The Hawthorne legacy doesn’t belong to Malcolm.””

The room went silent.

“It doesn’t belong to Adrian.””

Another pause.

“And it certainly doesn’t belong to Malik.””

Malik stared at the speaker.

“Then who does it belong to?””

For the first time, Victoria sounded emotional.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Hurt.

“It belongs to the person your family erased.””

The lights flickered.

A final message appeared on the wall screen.

A photograph.

An elderly woman.

Standing beside a young Adrian.

Malcolm looked at the image.

His blood ran cold.

Because he knew that face.

Everyone did.

The woman everyone believed was dead.

The woman whose disappearance started the first Hawthorne secret.

The woman who had been missing for thirty years.

Victoria’s final words echoed through the room.

“Meet the real founder of the Hawthorne empire.””

The screen displayed her name.

*EVELYN HAWTHORNE.*

And beneath it:

*STATUS: ALIVE.*
