Chapter 3: The Video That Was Never Meant to Be Seen

The entire Hawthorne estate went silent.

Thomas Reed stood beneath the golden lights of the ballroom, his hands trembling at his sides.

For thirty-five years, he had been the man who stood behind the Hawthorne family.

The man who knew every secret.

Every threat.

Every enemy.

But tonight, for the first time, he looked afraid.

Malcolm stared at him.

“Thomas.””

The former security chief swallowed.

“Yes, sir.””

“You knew about this?””

Thomas looked at the private jet.

“I knew Adrian was afraid.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

The old man lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

A wave of whispers moved through the crowd.

Malcolm’s jaw tightened.

“You knew my son was in danger, and you said nothing?””

Thomas looked like he had been carrying that guilt for twenty years.

“I tried.””

Malcolm stepped closer.

“You tried?””

“I warned you.””

“When?””

“The night before Adrian disappeared.””

The billionaire froze.

Malik watched them carefully.

He had spent his entire life believing rich people lived in a different world.

A world where problems disappeared with money.

But standing there, he saw something different.

Fear looked the same on everyone.

Thomas walked toward the jet.

“He came to me three weeks before it happened. He asked me to investigate something.””

“What?””

Thomas looked at Victoria.

The woman immediately looked away.

“That Hawthorne Industries was being used for something Adrian couldn’t understand.””

Victoria’s voice sharpened.

“Careful, Thomas.””

The old man ignored her.

“He found financial records that didn’t make sense. Money moving through companies that didn’t officially exist. Contracts signed by people who weren’t real.””

Malcolm’s face hardened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Because Adrian told me not to.””

“And you listened?””

“He said if you knew, you would confront the wrong person.””

Everyone looked toward Victoria.

She laughed nervously.

“This is absurd.””

Malcolm didn’t look away from her.

“Is it?””

Victoria’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Malik noticed again.

She wasn’t confused.

She was waiting.

Waiting for something.

“Play the video,” Malcolm ordered.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Sir, you need to understand what you’re about to see.””

“I already lost twenty years.””

Malcolm’s voice cracked.

“I’m not losing another minute.””

He turned to Malik.

The boy was standing quietly beside him.

“Are you sure you want to see this?””

Malik looked at the screen.

His whole life had been built around missing pieces.

A father he never met.

A mother who carried secrets.

A name she told him to hide.

“I spent nine years wondering who I was,” he whispered.

Then he looked at Malcolm.

“I think I deserve to know.””

Malcolm nodded.

The recovered video began.

The screen flickered.

Static filled the jet.

Then a young man appeared.

Adrian Hawthorne.

Twenty years younger.

Alive.

Smiling.

Malik stopped breathing.

Because even though he had never met him, he knew immediately.

That was his father.

Adrian sat inside the same aircraft.

The same leather seat.

The same wooden panels.

But his expression was different.

He wasn’t smiling anymore.

He looked exhausted.

Afraid.

“If you’re watching this,” Adrian said into the camera, “then I’m probably gone.””

Malcolm closed his eyes.

Hearing his son’s voice after two decades broke something inside him.

The video continued.

“I don’t know who will find this. Maybe my father. Maybe Malik.””

The boy stepped closer.

His own name coming from his father’s mouth felt unreal.

Adrian looked directly into the camera.

“Malik, if you’re seeing this someday…”

He paused.

His eyes became emotional.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t there.””

Malik’s face tightened.

His mother had always told him not to hate his father.

She had told him there was a reason.

Now he finally knew why.

Adrian continued.

“I need you to understand something. Everything I did was to protect you.””

The screen changed slightly.

A noise came from somewhere outside the recording.

Adrian turned his head.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Someone knows about you.””

Malcolm leaned forward.

“Who?””

The video did not answer.

Instead, Adrian continued.

“They know Amelia had the baby. They know the Hawthorne bloodline didn’t end with me.””

Malik touched the locket.

The room was completely silent.

Adrian looked down.

“If anything happens to me, Amelia knows what to do.””

Malcolm whispered:

“Amelia…”

The name carried years of regret.

The video continued.

“She will keep Malik away from this family because she understands something I didn’t.””

Adrian looked directly into the camera.

“My family is the greatest danger to my son.””

Victoria suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

Every head turned.

Malcolm’s eyes narrowed.

“Enough?””

She shook her head.

“This is clearly edited.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You know it isn’t.””

Victoria’s face hardened.

“You were always too loyal to Adrian.””

“And you were always too afraid of what he discovered.””

The tension exploded.

Security moved closer.

Malcolm raised his hand.

“No one leaves.””

Several guests immediately protested.

“Mr. Hawthorne, this is ridiculous.””

“I have nothing to do with this.””

“I need to call my lawyer.””

Malcolm didn’t even look at them.

“Lock the gates.””

The order shocked everyone.

The billionaire who controlled entire industries had just turned his own estate into a crime scene.

Malik watched the screen.

Adrian was still speaking.

“There is one person who knows the entire truth.””

The recording showed Adrian reaching toward something off-camera.

A small folder.

He placed it on the seat.

“His name is Thomas Reed.””

The old man closed his eyes.

Malcolm looked at him.

“You knew?””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“I knew some of it.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means Adrian trusted me with the truth.””

“And you kept it from me?””

Thomas looked broken.

“Because he made me promise.””

Malcolm stepped closer.

“You made a promise to my son over your loyalty to me?””

Thomas answered quietly:

“No.””

A pause.

“I made a promise to your son because you were my friend.””

That sentence hurt more than an argument.

Malcolm looked away.

The video continued.

Adrian opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Names.

Then he said something that made everyone freeze.

“The person who betrayed me is not trying to destroy Hawthorne Industries.””

A pause.

“They’re trying to erase Malik before he can inherit it.””

Malcolm looked confused.

“Inherit?””

Adrian’s voice continued.

“Father, if Malik is alive, he is the rightful heir.””

The room exploded.

People shouted.

“What?””

“The child?””

“Impossible.””

Malik stared at Malcolm.

He didn’t understand.

“Rightful heir to what?””

Nobody answered.

Because Malcolm knew.

And for the first time, everyone else realized something.

The poor boy standing in torn sneakers wasn’t just connected to the Hawthorne family.

He was connected to the entire empire.

The video reached its final minute.

Adrian picked up another object.

A small silver key.

He held it toward the camera.

“This key opens the final compartment.””

Malcolm leaned closer.

“Where?””

Adrian looked directly into the lens.

“Under the Hawthorne estate.””

Everyone froze.

Because there was no hidden room beneath the estate.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

Adrian continued.

“The person who hid the truth built a vault under this house.””

A shadow crossed his face.

“And inside that vault is proof of what happened twenty years ago.””

The screen flickered.

Then Adrian said the last words anyone expected.

“Malik, when you find this…”

The recording distorted.

“…don’t trust the person who welcomes you home.””

The screen went black.

No one spoke.

Then the lights inside the jet suddenly turned red.

An alarm began to sound.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Malcolm looked around.

“What’s happening?””

Thomas moved toward the control panel.

His face drained of color.

“Someone triggered the security system.””

“Who?””

Thomas stared at the screen.

A new message had appeared.

Everyone watched as three words slowly appeared:

*VAULT ACCESS GRANTED.*

Then another line appeared beneath it.

*USER IDENTIFIED: VICTORIA VALE.*

The room went completely still.

May you like

Malcolm turned toward Victoria.

But she was already running.
