Chapter 3: The Picture That Should Not Exist

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Not even Vanessa.

She didn’t need to.

She had seen the reaction she wanted.

The picture on her phone had done more damage than any threat could have.

My father.

Alive.

Standing outside a brick building I had never seen before.

Wearing the same navy jacket he wore on weekends.

The same watch he always forgot to take off before washing dishes.

The same face I had memorized from old photographs because I thought that was all I had left.

My knees felt weak.

“No,” I whispered.

Vanessa lowered the phone slightly.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I shook my head harder.

“That’s not possible.””

My voice sounded like it belonged to someone else.

Because if the picture was real, then every memory I had spent two years building my life around was wrong.

The funeral.

The hospital.

The people telling me my father was gone.

All of it.

Cole stepped closer.

“Let me see the picture.””

Vanessa hesitated.

That tiny hesitation told me something.

She didn’t want to hand it over.

Cole noticed too.

“If you’re telling the truth, show us.””

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she slowly extended the phone.

Cole took it.

The bikers gathered around him.

Ethan stayed where he was.

He looked like he already knew what the picture would show.

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

His eyes closed.

“Maya…”

“You knew he was alive?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

I stepped toward him.

“Then why do you look like you knew?””

Ethan looked at the ground.

“Because I knew there was a possibility.””

My chest tightened.

“A possibility?””

He swallowed.

“Your father disappeared after the accident.””

The word hit me harder than I expected.

Disappeared.

Not died.

Not gone.

Disappeared.

“Everyone said he died.””

“I know.””

“Everyone went to his funeral.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you saying disappeared?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because I never saw his body.””

The world became quiet again.

A truck passed on the road.

The gas station sign flickered in the sunlight.

Everything looked normal.

And that made it worse.

How could the biggest secret of my life be happening in the middle of an ordinary afternoon?

Cole handed the phone to one of the bikers.

“Zoom in.””

The man did.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Cole looked at him.

“What did you see?””

The biker turned the screen around.

“There’s something behind him.””

Everyone leaned closer.

I couldn’t see clearly from where I stood.

Cole studied the image.

Then his eyes narrowed.

“What building is that?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Ethan did.

“A medical research facility.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Your father worked with companies that developed advanced prosthetic technology.””

I looked down at my artificial leg.

My stomach twisted.

The accident.

My leg.

My father disappearing.

The recorder.

None of it felt random anymore.

Cole looked at Vanessa.

“You knew?””

She crossed her arms.

“I knew my husband was involved in projects I didn’t understand.””

“But you knew he survived.””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“I knew he was alive after the accident.””

My breath caught.

The words were so casual.

Like she hadn’t just destroyed my entire reality.

“You knew?””

My voice broke.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I didn’t know where he was.””

“But you knew!””

The tears came again.

“You let me think he abandoned me.””

Her face changed.

For a second, there was something almost like regret.

Then it disappeared.

“Maya, your father made choices.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made choices.””

The bikers became still.

Because everyone heard it.

The difference.

Vanessa wasn’t defending herself.

She was avoiding.

Cole stepped forward.

“Tell the truth.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You think you know what happened?””

“No.””

Cole’s voice stayed calm.

“That’s why I’m asking.””

Vanessa looked away.

And for the first time, she seemed unsure.

But then her phone rang.

Everyone noticed.

She looked at the screen.

And immediately declined the call.

Cole noticed.

“Who was that?””

“No one.””

The phone rang again.

This time, the name flashed briefly before she turned it away.

I saw it.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

*UNKNOWN SECURITY.*

My stomach dropped.

“Who is calling you?””

Vanessa put the phone back in her pocket.

“You need to leave.””

Nobody moved.

She looked at Ethan.

“You especially.””

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Why?””

“Because you know what happens when people keep digging.””

The way she said it made my skin crawl.

Not like a warning.

Like a memory.

Cole heard it too.

“You’ve threatened him before.””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“Everyone makes mistakes.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You told me he was gone.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“You told me Maya was safer not knowing.””

Still nothing.

“You told me if I talked, she would be taken away.””

Her eyes shifted to him.

“That was true.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Ethan.

“Why would they take me away?””

Ethan looked devastated.

“Because your father left something behind.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then he looked at the recorder.

“The reason Vanessa was trying to find that device.””

Cole lifted it.

“What’s on the third file?””

Vanessa went completely still.

That reaction was louder than words.

Cole noticed.

“So the last file matters.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Give me the recorder.””

“No.””

The answer came from me.

Everyone looked at me.

I held my head high even though I was shaking.

“No more secrets.””

Vanessa stared at me.

“Maya.””

“No.””

I backed away.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””

For the first time, I saw real anger in her eyes.

Not irritation.

Not frustration.

Anger.

“You have no idea what your father put you in the middle of.””

“My father tried to protect me.””

“Your father was selfish.””

The words hit like a slap.

Cole immediately looked at her.

“That’s a serious thing to say about a man who left a message protecting his daughter.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“You don’t know him.””

“No,” Cole said.

“But you seem scared of what he left behind.””

That silence was enough.

A shadow crossed Vanessa’s face.

Then she did something unexpected.

She looked at me.

And her expression softened.

Too quickly.

Too perfectly.

“Maya, I know you hate me right now.””

I didn’t answer.

“But you need to understand something.””

She took a slow breath.

“I protected you.””

I almost laughed.

“You locked me in my room.””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

“I did what I had to do.””

“You told everyone I was unstable.””

“I was trying to keep you safe.””

“You took away my dad’s pictures.””

“I was trying to protect you from the truth.””

The words made my blood run cold.

“The truth?””

Vanessa looked at the recorder.

Then back at me.

“Your father didn’t disappear because someone hurt him.””

She paused.

“He disappeared because he was running.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“He was running from the people who wanted him dead.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at Cole.

And suddenly, I understood.

She wasn’t trying to scare me.

She was trying to scare him.

“Ask him.””

Everyone looked at Cole.

He frowned.

“Ask me what?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Ask him why your father trusted a group of bikers with a secret instead of the police.””

Cole’s expression changed.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

A flicker.

A memory.

“You know my father?”” I whispered.

Cole didn’t answer.

My voice grew louder.

“Cole.””

The bikers looked at their leader.

Nobody spoke.

Then Cole slowly reached into his leather vest.

My heart stopped.

He pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

Old.

Worn.

Carefully hidden.

He looked at it for a long moment.

Then he looked at me.

“Maya…”

I could hear the fear in his voice.

Not for himself.

For me.

“Your father came to me two years ago.””

The parking lot disappeared.

“What?””

Cole unfolded the paper.

“He gave me one instruction.””

My hands started shaking.

“What instruction?””

Cole looked at Vanessa.

Then at Ethan.

Then finally at me.

“He told me that if you ever found the recorder…”

The paper trembled slightly in his hand.

“…I was supposed to give you this.””

He held it out.

I took one step forward.

Then another.

The paper had my name written on it.

In handwriting I knew better than my own.

*Maya.*

My fingers touched the ink.

And underneath my name were five words.

Five words that made everyone in that parking lot go silent.

*Do not trust the police.*

I looked up.

May you like

And before I could ask why, Cole said the sentence that changed everything.

“Because your father believed the person who ordered the cover-up was still working inside the department.””
