Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Evidence

The paper felt heavier than it should have.

It was only a single sheet.

A few words written in black ink.

My name.

My father’s handwriting.

But somehow it felt like I was holding two years of unanswered questions in my hands.

I traced the letters carefully.

*Maya.*

I remembered watching him write grocery lists on the kitchen counter.

I remembered him signing school forms.

I remembered the way he always wrote my name bigger than anything else on the page.

Like my name mattered more than the rest of the world.

Now that same handwriting was warning me not to trust the people who were supposed to protect us.

“Your father gave you that?”” I asked Cole.

He nodded slowly.

“Not directly.””

My eyes lifted.

“What does that mean?””

Cole looked around the parking lot.

The bikers were still watching Vanessa.

Ethan looked nervous.

And Vanessa looked like she was waiting for something.

Cole folded his arms.

“He came to me three days before the accident.””

The words made my chest tighten.

“Three days?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Cole looked down at the paper.

“He said he had uncovered something dangerous.””

Vanessa immediately spoke.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Everyone turned.

She stepped forward.

“You have no idea what kind of man my husband was.””

My stomach twisted.

She kept saying that.

My husband.

Like she was the only person who knew him.

Like I wasn’t his daughter.

Cole looked at her.

“I knew him longer than you think.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What does that mean?””

Cole didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

“Maya, your father didn’t come to me because he wanted revenge.””

“Then why?””

“Because he was scared.””

That word hurt.

My father was never scared.

At least, that was what I believed.

He was the person who checked under my bed for monsters.

The person who told me storms couldn’t hurt me if he was there.

But now I realized something.

Maybe brave people weren’t people who never felt fear.

Maybe they were people who felt it and still kept going.

“What was he scared of?””

Cole took a breath.

“Someone inside the system.””

Ethan looked away.

I noticed.

“You know who.””

He didn’t respond.

“Ethan.””

His jaw tightened.

“I know who your father suspected.””

“Who?””

Before Ethan could answer, Vanessa’s phone rang again.

This time, she didn’t ignore it.

She looked at the screen.

Her face went pale.

Then she answered.

“Hello?””

Everyone watched.

She turned away slightly.

“No. That’s not possible.””

A pause.

Then her voice dropped.

“You said nobody knew.””

My skin prickled.

Cole looked at the bikers.

One of them quietly moved toward the edge of the parking lot.

Listening.

Vanessa’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“I handled the girl.””

I froze.

The girl.

Not Maya.

The girl.

Like I was a problem.

A file.

A task.

She looked over her shoulder at me.

And for a moment, her eyes met mine.

She realized I heard.

Her expression changed.

The call ended.

Cole stared at her.

“Who was that?””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Who were you reporting to?””

Still nothing.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Vanessa.””

His voice was quiet.

But full of anger.

“You told me there was nobody else.””

She looked at him.

“You believed me?””

The question was cruel.

Ethan flinched.

And I realized something.

He wasn’t just hiding information.

He had been manipulated too.

Cole stepped toward Vanessa.

“You’ve been lying to everyone.””

She smiled.

“No.””

Her eyes moved to me.

“I’ve been surviving.””

The words sounded rehearsed.

Like something she had told herself many times.

I held the paper tighter.

“Where is my dad?””

Nobody answered.

That was the question that mattered.

Not the recorder.

Not the accident.

Not the lies.

Where was he?

Alive or dead?

Somewhere waiting?

Or somewhere trapped?

Vanessa looked at me.

And something strange happened.

Her expression softened.

Not fake this time.

Almost sad.

“Maya…”

I hated that she could still make me want to believe her.

Because some part of me was still twelve years old.

Still waiting for someone to explain why my family broke apart.

“Your father loved you.””

The words surprised me.

I didn’t move.

Vanessa continued.

“But love doesn’t mean someone makes the right choices.””

Cole’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you doing?””

She ignored him.

“I tried to convince him to stop.””

“Stop what?”” I asked.

She looked at the recorder.

“That.””

The answer made no sense.

“What’s on those files?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“The reason your father disappeared.””

The wind moved through the parking lot.

A motorcycle mirror shook slightly.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan said:

“She’s trying to make you afraid.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“And you’re trying to pretend you’re innocent.””

Ethan’s face tightened.

“You threatened her.””

“You abandoned her.””

The words hit.

Hard.

Ethan looked at me.

“I know.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Do you?””

Then she looked at me.

“He told you he protected you.””

She pointed at Ethan.

“But he was the one who helped me keep your father’s secret.””

I turned to Ethan.

“Is that true?””

Silence.

That was all I needed.

My heart sank.

“Ethan.””

He rubbed his face.

“I was trying to fix it.””

“How?””

“I contacted someone.””

“Who?””

He looked at Cole.

“Your father’s old friend.””

Cole immediately stepped forward.

“Who?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then he said a name.

A name I had never heard.

But Vanessa reacted instantly.

“No.””

Her voice was full of fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

Cole noticed.

“Why does that name scare you?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Ethan looked at me.

“Because he’s the only person who knows where your father went.””

My heart stopped.

“He’s alive?””

Nobody answered.

But nobody denied it either.

A sudden sound cut through the parking lot.

A car door closing.

Everyone turned.

A black sedan had pulled into the gas station.

No license plate visible from where we stood.

The windows were tinted.

Cole immediately moved in front of me.

The bikers shifted positions.

Vanessa looked at the car.

And instead of fear…

She looked relieved.

That scared me more.

The driver’s door opened.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Black suit.

Calm.

He didn’t look around like he was lost.

He walked like he owned the place.

Like he knew exactly who he came for.

He looked at Vanessa first.

Then Ethan.

Then Cole.

Finally, his eyes landed on me.

My body went cold.

Because I had never met him before.

But he looked at me like he had known me my entire life.

“Maya,” he said.

My name sounded strange coming from his mouth.

Cole stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The man ignored him.

He stared at the recorder in Cole’s hand.

Then at the paper in mine.

And his expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You found it.””

Nobody moved.

I whispered:

“How do you know about the recorder?””

The man reached into his jacket.

Everyone tensed.

But he pulled out something small.

A photograph.

He held it up.

A photograph of my father.

Standing beside him.

Alive.

And written on the back of the picture were two words.

Two words that made my entire body freeze.

*Protect Maya.*

The man looked at me.

Then quietly said:

“Your father wanted you to know the truth.””

He paused.

“But he never wanted you to know it this way.””

Cole stared at him.

“Where is Maya’s father?””

The man looked toward the road.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

“He’s been trying to come home.””

My breath caught.

“Trying?””

The man looked back at me.

And his next words changed everything.

“He’s been hiding because someone inside this city has been hunting him for two years.””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at Ethan.

Then finally at me.

“And today…”

May you like

His voice lowered.

“…they found you.””
