Chapter 9: The Father Behind the Door

Nobody moved.

Not because we didn’t want to.

Because we couldn’t.

The voice downstairs had stopped every thought in my head.

My father.

Alive.

Standing somewhere in the house where I had spent two years believing I had lost him forever.

My hand covered my mouth.

The box slipped slightly in my fingers.

“Maya.””

Cole’s voice was quiet.

Careful.

“Stay behind me.””

But I couldn’t.

I couldn’t breathe.

I couldn’t think.

All I could do was stare at the staircase.

Waiting.

Hoping.

Terrified.

Then footsteps came closer.

One step.

Then another.

A man appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

Older than I remembered.

Thinner.

His hair had more gray.

His face carried the kind of exhaustion that didn’t come from missing sleep.

It came from carrying fear for too long.

But it was him.

My father.

My brain knew it before my heart accepted it.

“Dad?””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

His eyes found mine.

And everything changed.

The hard expression disappeared.

The fear.

The caution.

The years of running.

All of it disappeared.

“Maya.””

His voice broke.

I had heard his voice from a recorder.

From old videos.

From memories I replayed when I couldn’t sleep.

But nothing prepared me for hearing him say my name in the same room.

Alive.

Real.

He took one step forward.

Then stopped.

Like he wasn’t sure he was allowed.

Like he was afraid I would disappear.

I didn’t move.

Because part of me wanted to run into his arms.

And another part of me wanted to scream.

“You left me.””

The words came out quietly.

But they hit harder than shouting.

His face collapsed.

“I know.””

“No.””

My eyes filled.

“You don’t know.””

Nobody spoke.

Not Cole.

Not Marcus.

Not Ethan.

Not even Vanessa.

“I waited for you.””

My voice shook.

“I waited every night.””

My father looked down.

“I know.””

“How?””

He looked at me.

“Because I was there.””

The room went still.

“What?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I watched from a distance.””

I stepped back.

“That’s worse.””

“I know.””

“You watched me think you were dead?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

The sentence made my chest tighten.

Everyone had said those words.

Everyone.

But when he said them…

It hurt differently.

Because I wanted to believe him.

And that scared me.

My father took a breath.

“I wanted to come back.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then Brooks.

Then Ethan.

Finally, back at me.

“Because the person who caused the accident wasn’t finished.””

Brooks stepped forward.

“You’re making this sound simple.””

My father’s expression changed.

The warmth disappeared.

“Because you’re still lying.””

The room became cold.

Brooks stared at him.

“You have no proof.””

My father looked at the box in my hand.

“Maya.””

I looked down.

“The flash drive.””

I held it tighter.

“What’s on it?””

My father answered:

“Everything.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

Nobody expected it.

Everyone turned.

She stood near the doorway, looking exhausted.

“Everything?””

My father looked at her.

“Yes.””

Her smile was sad.

“You still think the truth fixes things.””

The words surprised me.

Because for the first time, Vanessa didn’t sound cruel.

She sounded tired.

My father looked at her.

“You helped me hide the evidence.””

She nodded.

“I did.””

Everyone reacted.

Ethan stared.

Brooks looked furious.

“What?””

Vanessa ignored him.

“I helped him because I realized too late who I had married.””

My stomach twisted.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“I wasn’t honest with you.””

That was an understatement.

“But I didn’t kill your father.””

My father’s voice was quiet.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“But you helped them believe I was dead.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.””

The admission hurt.

Even after everything.

Even after knowing she wasn’t the only enemy.

“You let me hate him.””

Her eyes met mine.

“I thought if you hated him, you would stop searching.””

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because searching would get you killed.””

Silence.

Nobody knew what to say.

Because the truth was becoming something none of us expected.

Not good people.

Not bad people.

Just broken people making choices.

My father looked at me.

“Maya, I need you to understand something.””

I wiped my face.

“What?””

“The accident wasn’t about me.””

He glanced at my prosthetic leg.

My heart tightened.

“It was about you.””

I froze.

“What?””

He looked devastated.

“The technology I was working on could change lives.””

He touched his chest.

“But someone wanted control over it.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“The prosthetic research.””

My father looked at him.

“Yes.””

I stared.

“They hurt me because of that?””

My father looked away.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“They hurt you because you were my reason to fight.””

I didn’t understand.

He continued.

“They knew I would never stop if you were safe.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“So they used me.””

My father’s eyes filled.

“They tried.””

Cole stepped closer.

“Who?””

Everyone waited.

My father looked at Brooks.

The detective’s face changed.

“No.””

My father didn’t blink.

“The person who ordered the cover-up was never Vanessa.””

Vanessa looked down.

The room became silent.

“It was you.””

Brooks shook his head.

“You have no idea what you’re saying.””

“I have every idea.””

My father pointed toward the flash drive.

“The files prove it.””

Brooks laughed.

A nervous laugh.

“You think a drive changes anything?””

My father looked at him.

“No.””

Then he looked at me.

“Because Maya is the proof.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

My father stepped closer.

“The reason I hid everything wasn’t because I didn’t trust anyone.””

He looked at Ethan.

“I trusted people.””

Ethan looked away.

“I trusted the wrong ones.””

Then he looked at me.

“But I knew one thing.””

“What?””

“You remembered.””

I frowned.

“Remembered what?””

My father looked toward my prosthetic leg.

“The night of the accident.””

My breath stopped.

“I was unconscious.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You were hurt.””

A pause.

“But you were awake.””

I felt dizzy.

“No.””

“Maya.””

“I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

He stepped closer.

“Because someone made sure you wouldn’t.””

Everyone froze.

Cole looked at Brooks.

“What did you do?””

Brooks’s face changed.

“I did nothing.””

My father continued.

“After the accident, Brooks told doctors your memory loss was trauma.””

My stomach turned.

“But?””

My father looked at me.

“But you remembered one thing.””

“What?””

His voice became softer.

“You heard someone say your name.””

The room disappeared.

A strange feeling moved through me.

A memory.

Buried.

Locked away.

Rain.

Glass breaking.

My father’s voice.

Someone else.

A man yelling.

I grabbed my head.

“No.””

My father rushed forward.

“Maya.””

“I remember…”

Everyone went silent.

I closed my eyes.

“I remember the car.””

My breathing became uneven.

“I remember Dad.””

My father held his breath.

“And I remember…”

The memory came back.

A voice.

A sentence.

A name.

I opened my eyes.

“It wasn’t Vanessa.””

Everyone stared.

I looked at Brooks.

“It was you.””

Brooks’s expression finally broke.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Because he knew.

I remembered.

“You were there.””

The detective took one step back.

My father whispered:

“Maya…”

I looked at him.

“I remember what he said.””

The room waited.

I heard my own voice shake.

“Before the crash…”

A tear fell.

“Detective Brooks said…”

Brooks’s face went pale.

I finished the sentence.

“‘When the girl is gone, nobody can prove anything.’”

Nobody moved.

The truth landed like a physical blow.

Brooks stared at me.

Then slowly reached inside his jacket.

Cole immediately reacted.

“Don’t.””

But Brooks wasn’t reaching for a weapon.

He pulled out a phone.

One message was displayed.

One sentence.

And it made every person in the room go silent.

*THE GIRL REMEMBERS. FIX IT.*

Brooks looked at the screen.

Then at me.

And for the first time…

He looked afraid.

Because the person who had controlled him had just given a new order.

And everyone understood what it meant.

May you like

He wasn’t here to hide the truth anymore.

He was here to erase it.
