Chapter 6: The Detective Who Buried the Truth

The badge caught the sunlight.

That was the first thing I noticed.

A small flash of metal.

Something that was supposed to mean safety.

Protection.

Justice.

But after everything I had learned, I wasn’t sure what any of those words meant anymore.

Detective Aaron Brooks stepped out of the SUV like he had all the time in the world.

No panic.

No urgency.

No fear.

He adjusted the sleeve of his dark jacket and looked across the parking lot.

At Cole.

At Marcus.

At Ethan.

Then his eyes landed on me.

And somehow, that was the worst part.

Because he didn’t look surprised.

He looked like he had been waiting.

“Maya.””

My body went still.

I hated how everyone knew my name.

I hated how many people had been watching my life while I knew nothing about theirs.

Cole moved in front of me.

“You’re not coming any closer.””

Brooks stopped.

He glanced at Cole’s vest.

Then at the line of bikers behind him.

“I was wondering when you would get involved.””

Cole’s face tightened.

“You know me?””

Brooks gave a small smile.

“Everyone knows who Cole Jackson is.””

My stomach dropped.

Another secret.

Another person who knew more than they admitted.

Cole didn’t react.

But his hands tightened into fists.

“Why are you here?””

Brooks looked at Vanessa.

“That depends.””

Vanessa stared back.

“You told me you would handle it.””

The words came out before she could stop them.

Everyone heard.

Brooks’s eyes moved to her.

A warning.

Cold and immediate.

Vanessa looked away.

I felt something inside me shift.

She was afraid of him.

Not pretending.

Not acting.

Actually afraid.

Marcus stepped forward.

“You need to leave.””

Brooks laughed quietly.

“Still protecting him after all this time?””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what protecting means.””

Brooks looked at him.

“I know exactly what it means.””

Then he looked at me.

“It means your father left a child surrounded by adults who thought they could solve everything.””

My heart started pounding.

“Don’t talk about my father.””

Brooks studied me.

“You’re more like him than you realize.””

I hated that sentence.

Because everyone kept saying things about my father.

Who he was.

What he wanted.

What he believed.

But nobody asked what I wanted.

I stepped away from Cole.

“What happened to him?””

Brooks didn’t answer.

“Where is my dad?””

The detective looked at Marcus.

Then Ethan.

Then Vanessa.

Finally, back at me.

“Your father made dangerous decisions.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“He put people in danger.””

“My father protected people.””

Brooks tilted his head.

“Did he?””

The question hurt because it sounded like he wanted me to doubt him.

I had spent two years doing exactly that.

I wouldn’t do it again.

“You signed the report.””

The words surprised everyone.

Brooks’s expression changed slightly.

“The accident report.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You know about that.””

“Yes.””

I held the paper.

“My father wrote that you knew the truth.””

A strange silence followed.

Brooks noticed the paper.

For the first time, his calm expression cracked.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“What did he give you?””

Cole stepped closer.

“Not your concern.””

Brooks looked at him.

“Actually, it is.””

The confidence in his voice bothered me.

Like he believed he still had control.

“Why?””

I asked.

“Why does it matter what my father left me?””

Brooks looked at me.

“Because your father didn’t understand the consequences of his actions.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“He understood.””

My voice became stronger.

“He understood people were lying.””

Brooks looked at Vanessa.

Then at Marcus.

“You have no idea what game you’re playing.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Funny coming from you.””

Brooks’s eyes hardened.

“Maya, I need you to come with me.””

Every instinct in my body screamed no.

I stepped backward.

“No.””

His face stayed calm.

“I’m trying to keep you safe.””

I almost laughed.

That sentence again.

Everyone used it.

Everyone said it.

Everyone meant something different.

“You’re all trying to keep me safe by taking away my choices.””

Brooks looked almost disappointed.

“You’re young.””

“I’m young, not stupid.””

The bikers behind me stayed silent.

But I felt them there.

A wall.

A choice.

A chance.

Brooks sighed.

“You don’t understand what your father uncovered.””

“Then explain it.””

Silence.

I stared at him.

“Explain it.””

He didn’t.

Because he couldn’t.

Or because he wouldn’t.

Either way, I saw the truth.

He wasn’t here to answer questions.

He was here to control them.

Marcus whispered:

“He knows.””

Brooks looked at him.

“Be careful.””

The threat was quiet.

Almost polite.

That made it worse.

Cole noticed.

“You’re threatening him?””

“No.””

Brooks smiled.

“I’m reminding him.””

A sound came from the recorder in Cole’s hand.

Everyone looked down.

The device had turned on.

None of us touched it.

Static filled the parking lot.

Brooks froze.

My heart stopped.

Because I realized something.

The recorder wasn’t finished.

The third file.

It had activated.

Cole looked at the screen.

*FILE 3 OF 3.*

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

The recorder clicked.

My father’s voice came through.

And this time…

He sounded different.

Not afraid.

Determined.

“If you’re hearing this, then Detective Brooks has found Maya.””

Brooks’s entire expression changed.

The calm disappeared.

Everyone heard.

My father continued.

“Aaron, if you are there, I need you to listen carefully.””

Brooks stepped forward.

“Turn that off.””

Nobody moved.

Cole held it higher.

The recording continued.

“I know what you did.””

The parking lot became silent.

Brooks stared at the device.

“You told everyone I was dead.””

My breath caught.

My father’s voice remained steady.

“You changed the report. You erased evidence. And you helped Vanessa hide the truth.””

Vanessa looked at Brooks.

Not angry.

Shocked.

“You said nobody knew.””

Brooks ignored her.

The recording continued.

“But you made one mistake.””

A pause.

Then my father said:

“You forgot that I had already sent everything somewhere else.””

Brooks’s face went pale.

“What did he send?””

Nobody answered.

My father continued.

“The files, the documents, the recordings. They are safe.””

Cole looked at Marcus.

Marcus looked back.

They both understood something.

Something I didn’t.

My father’s voice lowered.

“Maya, if you’re hearing this, I’m sorry.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to come home.””

I covered my mouth.

“But I couldn’t.””

The words broke something inside me.

Because that was the answer I had wanted for two years.

Not a perfect answer.

Not one without pain.

Just proof that he wanted to come back.

“I need you to remember one thing.””

The recorder crackled.

“Family is not always the people who share your blood.””

I looked at Cole.

Then Marcus.

Then Ethan.

“And sometimes the people closest to you are the ones who know exactly where to hurt you.””

Vanessa looked down.

Brooks looked furious.

Then my father said the final words.

“The person who has the original evidence is someone Maya has already met.””

Everyone froze.

Cole looked around.

Marcus looked around.

Ethan’s face changed.

“No…”

The recorder clicked.

Silence.

My heart pounded.

Someone Maya had already met.

Someone who had been near me.

Someone who knew my life.

Brooks suddenly moved.

Not toward me.

Toward Ethan.

Everyone noticed.

Cole grabbed his arm.

“What are you doing?””

Brooks looked at Ethan.

And said something that made my blood turn cold.

“You were supposed to get rid of the last copy.””

Ethan went pale.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Nobody answered.

Because Ethan looked guilty.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Guilty.

Cole released Brooks and turned slowly.

“Ethan.””

Ethan swallowed.

“Maya…”

I stepped back.

“No.””

His face broke.

“Listen to me.””

But I couldn’t.

Not after everything.

Not after every secret.

Not after every lie.

“You had another copy?””

Ethan looked down.

And that was the answer.

Brooks watched the chaos unfold with a cold expression.

Then he said quietly:

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed at Ethan.

“The question is…”

A pause.

“Why did your father trust the person who betrayed him most?””

Ethan closed his eyes.

And whispered:

“Because he knew I was the only one who could save Maya.””

May you like

Then, from somewhere behind the gas station…

A gunshot echoed.
