Chapter 7: The Secret Ethan Carried

The sound of the gunshot didn’t feel real.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The entire parking lot froze in that strange second after danger appears, when your brain understands something terrible happened but your body hasn’t caught up yet.

Then Cole shouted.

“Down!””

His voice cut through everything.

The bikers moved instantly.

They weren’t panicking.

They weren’t running.

They moved with the kind of discipline that came from years of knowing how quickly life could change.

Cole grabbed my shoulder and pulled me behind the row of motorcycles.

My knees hit the pavement.

My prosthetic leg scraped against the concrete.

I barely felt it.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat.

Another sound followed.

A motorcycle mirror shattered.

Glass scattered across the ground.

Someone was shooting at us.

Vanessa dropped behind the SUV.

Brooks pulled his weapon.

Ethan grabbed Marcus and dragged him behind the gas station wall.

Everyone had chosen a direction.

Everyone except me.

Because I was still staring at Ethan.

The person my father trusted.

The person who had lied.

The person who had been carrying another copy of the evidence.

“You knew.””

My voice came out barely above a whisper.

Ethan looked at me.

Even with danger surrounding us, his face looked broken.

“Maya…”

“You knew.””

A third shot hit the pavement near the gas pumps.

Cole pulled me lower.

“Now is not the time.””

But I couldn’t stop.

Because this was the moment my entire life had been building toward.

Not the gunshots.

Not Brooks.

Not Vanessa.

Ethan.

“You had another copy.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than any lie.

“Why?””

His face twisted with regret.

“Because your father asked me to keep it hidden.””

I stared at him.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

The honesty shocked me.

Not because it fixed anything.

Because it was the first honest thing he had said.

“Afraid of what?””

Ethan looked toward Brooks.

“Of what would happen if you knew.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to decide what I can handle.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you?””

He had no answer.

Another shot.

Everyone ducked.

Cole looked toward the road.

“We need to move.””

Marcus nodded.

“He’s not here alone.””

Brooks looked around.

For the first time, he looked worried.

“You’re right.””

Cole stared at him.

“You knew?””

Brooks didn’t answer.

That silence said enough.

“You brought them here.””

Brooks looked at him.

“No.””

Cole stepped closer.

“You knew they were coming.””

Brooks’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

The betrayal spread through the group.

Even Vanessa looked surprised.

“You knew?””

Brooks ignored her.

“They were already tracking the recorder.””

My stomach dropped.

“Then why come here?””

Brooks looked at me.

“Because I needed to know who had it.””

Cole’s expression darkened.

“You used her.””

Brooks didn’t deny it.

That was worse.

I hated how many people had looked at me like I was a piece on a board.

A clue.

A responsibility.

A problem.

Nobody looked at me like a person.

Except maybe my father.

And he wasn’t here.

The gunfire stopped.

The silence afterward was terrifying.

Cole looked at everyone.

“We leave now.””

Nobody argued.

Not even Brooks.

That scared me.

Because if Detective Brooks was willing to walk away from a confrontation, something was very wrong.

The bikers moved quickly.

One of them brought a motorcycle around.

Another checked the road.

Marcus looked at me.

“Maya, you need to stay with Cole.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He paused.

“No?””

“I’m done being moved around.””

Everyone stopped.

I looked at the recorder.

The paper.

The photograph.

All the pieces of my father’s message.

“I spent two years being told nothing.””

My voice shook.

“But the truth is the only thing I have left.””

Cole looked at me carefully.

Then he nodded once.

“Good.””

Everyone looked at him.

He continued:

“But truth doesn’t matter if you don’t survive long enough to use it.””

I understood.

For the first time, I understood what my father had meant.

Trust actions.

Not explanations.

Cole wasn’t promising to protect me.

He was actually doing it.

We moved behind the gas station toward the service road.

Vanessa followed.

I noticed.

“You’re coming with us?””

She looked at me.

“You think I want to stay here?””

The anger in her voice was real.

So was the fear.

For years, I thought Vanessa was the biggest threat in my life.

Now I wasn’t sure.

Maybe she was just another person trapped in something bigger.

That didn’t forgive her.

It just made the truth more complicated.

Marcus stopped suddenly.

Everyone turned.

“What?””

He stared at the ground.

A small object was lying beside the wall.

A phone.

Not his.

Not Ethan’s.

Not mine.

Brooks stepped closer.

“No.””

Cole looked at him.

“You recognize it?””

Brooks didn’t answer.

Marcus picked it up carefully.

The screen was cracked.

But still on.

There was one message open.

One sentence.

*IF MAYA HAS THE RECORDER, TAKE HER ALIVE.*

My blood turned cold.

Cole looked at me.

Marcus looked at me.

Even Vanessa looked afraid.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

This was never about the evidence.

It was about me.

“Who sent that?”” Ethan whispered.

Brooks stared at the phone.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody believed him.

He looked angry.

Not defensive.

Angry.

Because maybe he really didn’t know.

Marcus checked the phone.

“There’s a number.””

Cole looked.

“Can you trace it?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not from here.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“I can.””

Everyone looked at him.

I almost laughed.

Of course he could.

Another thing he knew.

Another hidden ability.

Another secret.

Cole stared.

“How?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then said:

“Because I was the one who built the tracking system.””

The silence returned.

I looked at him.

“What tracking system?””

Ethan looked at me.

“The one your father used.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Your father knew someone would try to find the evidence.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You never told me.””

“I wasn’t supposed to.””

Cole stepped closer.

“Start talking.””

Ethan took a breath.

“The recorder wasn’t just a recorder.””

He looked at the device.

“It had a hidden transmitter.””

I stared at it.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your father could know if someone found it.””

My stomach twisted.

“So…”

I looked around.

“Someone knows we have it.””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

The realization hit.

Hard.

“That’s why they came.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the recorder.

My father had planned for this.

He knew.

He knew someone would chase the truth.

He knew someone would try to silence it.

And he had trusted Ethan.

Even after everything.

“Why you?””

Ethan looked down.

“Because I was the person nobody would suspect.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

He had been close enough to help.

Close enough to betray.

Close enough to carry the secret.

A siren sounded in the distance.

Not police.

Something else.

Brooks looked toward the road.

“We have to go.””

Cole stared at him.

“You don’t give orders here.””

Brooks met his eyes.

“Then listen to the situation.””

He pointed toward the city.

“You think those people came for the recorder?””

Nobody answered.

“They came because the transmitter activated.””

My fingers tightened.

“What happens now?””

Brooks looked at me.

And for the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.

“Now they know Maya is alive.””

The words felt strange.

Because I had always been alive.

But suddenly, I understood.

To these people…

I wasn’t just a daughter.

I wasn’t just a witness.

I was the last piece of a secret.

Marcus looked at the road.

“We need to find your father.””

I looked at the photograph again.

My father’s face.

Alive.

Waiting.

“Where?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan quietly said:

“There’s only one place he would go.””

Cole looked at him.

“Where?””

Ethan stared at the distant city.

“The place where everything started.””

My heart raced.

“The accident?””

He nodded.

“No.””

A pause.

“The house.””

Everyone went silent.

Because we all understood.

The place I had spent two years trying to forget.

The place where my father disappeared.

The place where Vanessa still lived.

Ethan looked at me.

“Maya…”

I already knew what he was going to say.

And I didn’t want to hear it.

But he said it anyway.

“Your father left the final evidence inside your old home.””

May you like

Then Marcus added quietly:

“And someone has been waiting there for you to come back.””
