Chapter 5: The Witness Who Came Back From The Dead

The man’s words stayed in the air.

*They found you.*

Not Vanessa.

Not Ethan.

Me.

My fingers tightened around the photograph until the edges bent.

For two years, I had believed my life had been destroyed by something that happened in the past.

A car accident.

A funeral.

A father who was gone.

But standing in that gas station parking lot, surrounded by strangers and secrets, I finally understood something.

The past wasn’t behind me.

It had been following me.

Cole didn’t take his eyes off the man.

“Start explaining.””

The man looked at him.

“My name is Marcus Hill.””

Ethan immediately stiffened.

“You.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Yes.””

The reaction was instant.

Ethan looked like he had seen a ghost.

“You said you were gone.””

Marcus gave a humorless smile.

“People say a lot of things when they need someone to disappear.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Marcus looked at her.

“And you shouldn’t have let Maya find the recorder.””

Her face changed.

A tiny crack in her confidence.

That was enough.

Cole noticed.

“You two know each other.””

Marcus nodded.

“We all know each other.””

He looked at the group of bikers.

“Some of us just know more than others.””

I looked between them.

“I don’t understand.””

Marcus’s expression softened.

For the first time since he arrived, he looked less like someone carrying secrets and more like someone carrying regret.

“Maya, your father didn’t leave because he wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t he come back?””

Marcus looked down.

Because there was a painful answer.

“I was supposed to help him.””

My throat tightened.

“Supposed to?””

He nodded.

“After the accident, your father discovered that the investigation was being manipulated.””

Cole crossed his arms.

“By who?””

Marcus glanced toward the road.

“People with power.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No,” Marcus agreed.

“It’s a warning.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Everyone kept saying the same thing.

Power.

System.

People.

But nobody would say the name.

Like speaking it would summon something.

I stepped closer.

“I’m tired of warnings.””

Everyone looked at me.

I held the recorder in one hand and the photograph in the other.

“I’m tired of everyone protecting me by lying to me.””

My voice shook.

“But nobody protected me.””

The words surprised even me.

Because I had spent so long trying to be strong.

Trying not to cry.

Trying not to ask why.

But now it all came out.

“I lost my dad.””

I looked at Ethan.

“You let me believe he abandoned me.””

Then at Vanessa.

“You made me feel like I was the reason everything went wrong.””

Finally, I looked at Marcus.

“And you all knew something.””

My eyes burned.

“You all knew.””

Nobody interrupted.

“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””

I shook my head.

“But I was alone.””

The silence afterward was different.

Not uncomfortable.

Not tense.

Just honest.

Marcus looked away.

Because he knew I was right.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology was quiet.

It almost made me angrier.

“Sorry doesn’t give me two years back.””

“No.””

Marcus nodded.

“It doesn’t.””

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Cole immediately moved.

“What’s that?””

Marcus handed it to me.

“Something your father left.””

I stared at it.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was another photograph.

But this one wasn’t like the others.

It was recent.

My father was standing outside a small house.

Smiling.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

And beside him was a handwritten note.

My eyes moved across the words.

*Maya, if you are reading this, then I failed to come home.*

I stopped breathing.

Marcus watched me.

My father’s handwriting continued.

*I need you to know one thing before anything else. I never stopped looking for you.*

My vision blurred.

I pressed my hand over my mouth.

*Everything I did was to keep you safe. But safety without the truth is another kind of prison.*

A tear landed on the paper.

*Trust the people who show you actions, not the people who give you explanations.*

I looked up.

My eyes immediately went to Vanessa.

Then Ethan.

Then Marcus.

The letter continued.

*There is one person you must find. Someone who knows what happened the night of the accident.*

Below that was a name.

A name I didn’t recognize.

*Detective Aaron Brooks.*

My heart dropped.

Cole saw it.

“Brooks?””

Marcus looked at him.

“You know him?””

Cole’s expression darkened.

“I know of him.””

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at her.

Not a normal laugh.

A nervous one.

“You still think he can help you?””

I turned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You really don’t know anything.””

Cole stepped closer.

“Explain.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Your father trusted Detective Brooks.””

She paused.

“But he was the one who signed the final accident report.””

My stomach twisted.

The letter fell slightly in my hand.

“No.””

Marcus looked serious.

“He was forced.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Was he?””

Ethan looked between them.

“Vanessa.””

She ignored him.

“Maya, your father spent months trying to prove the accident wasn’t an accident.””

She looked at the photograph.

“He thought Brooks would help.””

Her smile faded.

“Then Brooks was the one who told everyone your father died.””

The air disappeared.

I looked at Marcus.

“Is that true?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Cole looked furious.

“So your father left her a clue pointing toward the same person who buried the truth?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your father believed Brooks wasn’t the person who betrayed him.””

Everyone went quiet.

“Then who was?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Her expression hardened.

“No.””

Marcus didn’t stop.

“Your father found proof that someone close to him had been working against him for years.””

My fingers tightened.

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

And I hated that hesitation.

Because every hesitation was another secret.

“Say it.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Maya…”

“Say it.””

He took a breath.

Then quietly said:

“He suspected Vanessa.””

The parking lot went silent.

Vanessa looked at me.

But this time, she didn’t look angry.

She looked hurt.

Almost offended.

“You believe them?””

I didn’t answer.

Because the truth was terrifying.

I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

Marcus continued.

“But your father also believed something else.””

“What?””

“He believed Vanessa wasn’t working alone.””

A chill went through me.

Cole looked around.

“So there’s someone above her.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Marcus looked at the street.

At the city beyond the gas station.

Then he said:

“The person who has been cleaning up every trace your father left behind.””

A motorcycle engine suddenly roared.

One of the bikers near the entrance looked toward the road.

“Cole.””

His voice changed.

Everyone turned.

A black SUV had stopped across the street.

Not Vanessa’s SUV.

Another one.

Then another vehicle pulled behind it.

My heart started racing.

“How did they find us?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

The answer was standing right there.

Vanessa.

She slowly backed away.

“I didn’t call them.””

Cole looked at her.

Nobody believed her.

Then Marcus grabbed my arm.

“Where is the recorder?””

I looked down.

“It’s with Cole.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“Cole can’t have it.””

Everyone froze.

Cole held the recorder up.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus stared at him.

“Because your father never trusted the bikers with the recorder.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Marcus looked at the device.

Then at Cole.

“He trusted you with a different one.””

Cole’s expression changed.

A flash of confusion.

Then realization.

“No…”

Marcus whispered:

“Your father said the recorder was a test.””

The vehicles outside started moving closer.

The bikers reached inside their jackets.

Vanessa looked toward the approaching SUVs.

And for the first time all day…

She looked genuinely afraid.

Marcus grabbed my shoulder.

“Maya, listen to me.””

“What?””

His voice dropped.

“The recorder you found…”

He looked at Cole.

“…was never meant to expose Vanessa.””

The parking lot went completely silent.

“Then what was it meant to do?””

Marcus looked at me.

“To expose the person Vanessa was afraid of.””

The first SUV door opened.

A man stepped out.

Even from a distance, I could see the badge clipped to his belt.

Marcus whispered the name.

May you like

And my blood turned cold.

“Detective Aaron Brooks.””
