Chapter 10: The Sister Emily Never Told Me About

“Emily had a sister?””

Rebecca repeated the question as though saying it aloud might somehow make it less unbelievable.

I stared at the handwriting at the bottom of the letter.

If Daniel ever returns, call my sister. She knows what really happened.

There was a name beside the telephone number.

Laura Bennett.

I searched my memory.

Nothing.

Not one Christmas card. Not one family photograph. Not one conversation about a sister.

Emily had told me stories about her childhood, her parents, her cousins, and even the neighbors who used to babysit her.

But never Laura.

“Maybe she's a half-sister,” Rebecca suggested.

“Maybe.””

I took out my phone.

The number was handwritten in the same blue ink Emily had used throughout the letter.

I hesitated before dialing.

Maya sat on the sofa, listening.

“Dad, who is Laura?””

“Someone who might know more about your mother.””

“Is she family?””

I looked at her.

“I hope so.””

The call rang five times.

Then a woman answered.

“Hello?””

I cleared my throat.

“Is this Laura Bennett?””

“Yes. Who's calling?””

“My name is Marcus Hale. I was married to Emily Bennett.””

Silence.

Then I heard a sharp intake of breath.

“Oh my God.””

I gripped the phone.

“You knew Emily?””

The woman began crying.

“Yes.””

“Are you her sister?””

Another pause.

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“My wife died five years ago. I found a letter she left behind with your number.””

Laura's breathing became uneven.

“Did she finally tell you?””

“Tell me what?””

“That she had a daughter before she met you?””

I looked at Rebecca.

Then at Maya.

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

Laura began speaking quickly.

“Marcus, I need to explain. Emily made me promise not to contact you unless Daniel came back.””

“Daniel has come back.””

A long silence followed.

Then Laura said, “Where are you?””

I gave her the address.

“I'll be there in an hour.””

She ended the call.

I sat down.

Rebecca looked at me.

“Emily had another child?””

“I don't know.””

Maya approached us.

“Does that mean I have a brother or sister?””

I pulled her close.

“We're going to find out.””

An hour later, a woman in her late fifties knocked on Rebecca's front door.

She had Emily's eyes.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The same soft brown eyes that used to look at me across our kitchen table.

When she saw the photograph of Emily on the mantelpiece, she began crying.

“She's still beautiful,” Laura whispered.

I opened the door wider.

“Come in.””

Laura sat opposite me.

She held her handbag tightly in her lap.

Maya remained beside Rebecca.

I placed Emily's letter on the coffee table.

“Start at the beginning.””

Laura nodded.

“Emily and I had different fathers. We grew up together, but our parents' marriage was complicated. When we were teenagers, Emily was the one who protected me.””

She glanced at Maya.

“She would have loved you.””

Maya lowered her eyes.

“Why didn't I know you existed?””

Laura's face crumpled.

“Because your mother thought she was protecting you.””

I leaned forward.

“Protecting her from Daniel?””

Laura nodded.

“Daniel was Emily's first serious boyfriend. They were together for almost two years. When Emily discovered she was pregnant, Daniel promised to marry her.””

“What changed?””

“He found out his family had arranged a marriage for him. He wanted money, connections, and a future in his father's business. Emily refused to be hidden away.””

I listened without speaking.

Laura continued.

“She was already pregnant when she discovered Daniel had been seeing another woman. He told her he couldn't afford a scandal. He offered money if she agreed to let his family arrange everything privately.””

I felt sick.

“Did she accept?””

“No. She left.””

Laura opened her handbag and removed an old photograph.

It showed a younger Emily holding a newborn baby.

Maya.

My daughter.

On the back was a date and a short message.

My little miracle. No matter what happens, I will protect you.

I swallowed.

“Why didn't Emily tell me about this?””

Laura looked at me.

“Because Daniel threatened her.””

“What did he threaten?””

“He said he would take the baby.””

I felt my hands tighten.

“Could he legally do that?””

“Emily didn't know. She was young, frightened, and had no money. Daniel's family had connections. She believed him.””

Laura continued.

“When Emily met you, she finally felt safe. She told me she wanted to build a normal family. She wanted Maya to grow up without knowing the fear she'd lived through.””

I looked at the photograph.

“And the paternity test?””

Laura nodded.

“Daniel demanded one before Maya was born. Emily refused. She told him you were going to raise the baby as your own.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“Did she know I wasn't biologically related to Maya?””

Laura hesitated.

“She told me she didn't know. She had been with Daniel shortly before she met you. The dates were complicated.””

I stared at her.

“Are you saying there was a possibility?””

“Yes.””

I stood and walked toward the window.

Eleven years.

Eleven years of birthday parties, scraped knees, school plays, bedtime stories, and midnight fevers.

Eleven years of being Maya's father.

And now a stranger was claiming that biology gave him a right to take that away.

I turned back.

“Why did Daniel disappear?””

Laura's expression darkened.

“Because Emily had evidence.””

“What evidence?””

She opened her handbag again.

This time she removed a small USB drive.

“Emily gave me this shortly before she died.””

I stared at it.

“What is it?””

“Copies of messages, financial records, and a recording Daniel made when they were younger.””

I took the drive.

“Why didn't you give this to me before?””

Laura lowered her eyes.

“Because Emily made me promise to stay away unless Daniel returned.””

I looked at her.

“He has.””

“I know.””

Laura's voice became almost a whisper.

“There's something else, Marcus. Daniel wasn't the only person who threatened Emily.””

I felt cold.

“Who else?””

Laura looked toward Maya.

Then back at me.

“His mother.””

I frowned.

“Daniel's mother?””

Laura nodded.

“She was the one who arranged for Emily to disappear from their lives. She paid people to follow her. She made sure Daniel never had to acknowledge Maya publicly.””

I stared at the USB drive.

“And Vanessa?””

Laura's expression changed.

“Vanessa contacted me once.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“When?””

“About six months ago.””

“What did she want?””

Laura looked at Maya.

“She asked whether I still had Emily's evidence.””

I couldn't speak.

Laura continued.

“She said she was trying to build a family with Daniel and needed to make sure the past stayed buried.””

Rebecca stood.

“Vanessa knew all this?””

Laura nodded.

“And she knew about Maya.””

I looked down at the USB drive.

Then my phone rang.

Robert.

I answered.

“Marcus, where are you?””

“With Rebecca.””

“Good. I need you to come to my office immediately.””

“What happened?””

Robert took a breath.

“The authorities have located a document submitted by Daniel's office. It's a copy of a death certificate bearing your name.””

I felt my blood run cold.

“Was it real?””

“No. But there's something worse.””

“What?””

Robert paused.

“The certificate was used to initiate a legal application involving Maya.””

I gripped the phone.

“What application?””

Robert's answer was quiet.

“Daniel has filed a petition claiming that he is Maya's biological father and seeking legal recognition.””

I looked at my daughter.

She was watching me.

And for the first time, I realized Daniel wasn't trying to enter our family.

He was trying to take my place in it.
