Chapter 9: The Secret Emily Took to Her Grave

I drove straight to Rebecca's house.

Robert followed in his own car.

When I arrived, Maya was sitting on the living room sofa with a blanket around her shoulders.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

Rebecca stood beside her, holding the DNA report.

The moment Maya saw me, she jumped up.

“Dad!””

I caught her in my arms.

She buried her face against my chest.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

I pulled back.

“Why are you apologizing?””

“Because maybe Vanessa was right.””

I cupped her face.

“Listen to me. You don't ever apologize for someone else's lies.””

“But the paper—”

“Doesn't change who raised you, who loves you, or who your father is.””

She looked into my eyes.

“Are you sure?””

I nodded.

“Absolutely.””

Rebecca brought us some tea.

I sat beside Maya and waited until her breathing settled.

Then I asked, “Tell me exactly what Vanessa said.””

Maya stared at the blanket.

“She came into my room one night. She said she had something important to tell me.””

“When?””

“Last month.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She hadn't known about this.

Maya continued.

“She said my mother had a secret. She said my real father was someone else, and that you had taken me in because you loved Mom.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“What did you say?””

“I told her she was lying.””

Maya's voice cracked.

“Then she said she had proof.””

I looked at the DNA report.

“Did she show you this?””

Maya nodded.

“She said the test would explain everything.””

I pulled my daughter closer.

“Did she tell you who Daniel was?””

“She said he was my biological father.””

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to believe the report was wrong.

I wanted to believe Vanessa had invented another story to hurt Maya.

But the result was specific enough that I couldn't simply dismiss it.

I needed the truth.

And there was only one person who might have known it.

Emily.

My late wife.

Rebecca sat opposite me.

“Marcus, what are you thinking?””

I looked at her.

“I'm going to find out whether Emily ever knew Daniel.””

Rebecca frowned.

“Why would she?””

“I don't know.””

I took out my phone and searched my old email account.

I hadn't used it in years, but it contained thousands of messages from the period before Emily died.

I searched Daniel Brooks.

Nothing.

I searched Emily's old email address.

Nothing.

Then I remembered something.

After Emily died, Rebecca had helped me pack some of her belongings.

There were boxes we had never opened.

One contained old photographs, letters, and documents from before Maya was born.

I turned toward Rebecca.

“Do you still have those boxes?””

She nodded.

“In the garage.””

“Can we look?””

“Of course.””

We spent the next hour opening cardboard boxes.

There were birthday cards, hospital discharge papers, old insurance documents, and photographs from our wedding.

Maya sat nearby, quietly sorting through the photographs.

Then Rebecca pulled out a small wooden box.

“Marcus, look at this.””

Inside were several envelopes tied with a faded blue ribbon.

The first contained letters Emily had written to me during my business trips.

The second held photographs.

The third had no name on the outside.

Only a date.

Fourteen years earlier.

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The first line made my chest tighten.

Daniel, I know you want to be part of my life, but you need to understand that I have chosen Marcus.

I read it again.

Daniel.

My hands began shaking.

Rebecca leaned closer.

“Who's Daniel?””

I didn't answer.

I continued reading.

What happened between us was a mistake. I was young, frightened, and confused. I will not allow it to destroy the family I am building.

I looked at the date.

Fourteen years earlier.

Emily and I had been dating then.

Maya hadn't been born.

I continued.

You promised that you would never contact me again. Please keep that promise. Marcus deserves the truth only if I decide he needs to know.

I lowered the letter.

Rebecca looked horrified.

“Marcus…”

I couldn't speak.

There was another envelope.

This one contained a photograph of a younger Emily standing beside a man.

The man was unmistakable.

Daniel.

He looked younger, but his face was the same.

On the back, Emily had written:

The chapter I thought I had closed.

Maya approached us.

“Dad?””

I quickly folded the photograph.

“Go sit with Aunt Rebecca for a moment, sweetheart.””

She obeyed.

Rebecca lowered her voice.

“Do you think Daniel was involved with Emily before you met her?””

“I don't know.””

“Could he be Maya's biological father?””

I looked at the DNA report.

The half-sibling result suggested that Daniel and Maya shared a parent.

It didn't establish that he was her father.

There were other possibilities.

But the letter made one possibility much harder to ignore.

I found another document in the box.

It was an old medical form from the hospital where Maya had been born.

The father's name was listed as Marcus Hale.

My name.

My signature.

I stared at it.

Then I noticed a handwritten note in the margin.

Paternity confirmation pending.

I felt cold.

I had never been told that.

I looked at Rebecca.

“Did you know about this?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I searched the box again.

At the bottom was a sealed envelope addressed to me.

Emily's handwriting.

My name.

And one sentence:

Open this only if someone ever questions Maya's parentage.

I sat down.

For several seconds, I couldn't bring myself to break the seal.

Then I opened it.

Inside was a letter dated two days before Maya was born.

Marcus,

If you're reading this, someone has finally uncovered the past I tried so hard to leave behind.

I need you to know that I never lied about loving you. But I did hide something from you.

Before we met, I was involved with Daniel Brooks. We were young, and I believed he loved me. When I discovered I was pregnant, I told him.

He asked me to leave you before our relationship even began.

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

Rebecca sat beside me.

“Keep going.””

I forced myself to continue.

I refused. I told him I wanted to build a life with you. He said he would make sure the child never belonged to another man.

Marcus, I never knew whether Daniel meant a legal threat or something worse.

I chose you. I chose our daughter. And I prayed that would be enough.

My hands were shaking.

I turned the page.

There was one final paragraph.

There is something I never had the courage to tell you. The hospital offered a paternity test before Maya was born. I refused because I believed the test would give Daniel another reason to come into our lives. I wanted you to raise her without fear.

I stopped breathing.

Emily had never confirmed my biological relationship to Maya.

But she had also never said I wasn't her father.

I turned the final page.

It contained a short handwritten note.

If Daniel ever comes back, ask him why he disappeared when I told him I was pregnant.

I stared at the letter.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A familiar voice spoke.

“Marcus, this is Daniel.””

I stood.

“What do you want?””

“I heard you've been going through Emily's old things.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“How do you know that?””

Daniel ignored the question.

“You should stop digging.””

I gripped the phone.

“Were you involved with my wife before I met her?””

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel said quietly:

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“Is Maya your daughter?””

Another silence.

Then he answered.

“Biologically, yes.””

I felt the room spin.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

I could barely speak.

“Why did you let me raise her without telling me?””

Daniel sighed.

“Because Emily asked me to stay away.””

“And now?””

“Now things are different.””

“What does that mean?””

His voice became colder.

“It means Vanessa and I have spent years trying to correct a mistake.””

I stared at the letter in my hand.

“What mistake?””

Daniel answered with six words.

“The mistake of letting you keep my daughter.””

The call ended.

I stood motionless.

Then I heard Maya behind me.

“Dad?””

I turned.

She was standing in the doorway.

Her face was pale.

She had heard enough.

“Does that mean he's my real dad?””

I walked toward her.

I knelt and took both her hands.

“No matter what any test says, no matter what Daniel claims, I'm the man who has been your father every single day.””

She began crying.

I pulled her into my arms.

And as I held my daughter, I made a decision.

Daniel had spent eleven years staying away.

Vanessa had spent months trying to erase Maya from my life.

Neither of them would get another chance.

But then Rebecca picked up Emily's letter.

She had noticed something written at the bottom of the last page.

A name.

A telephone number.

And a final sentence Emily had added in different handwriting.

If Daniel ever returns, call my sister. She knows what really happened.

Rebecca looked at me.

“Marcus…”

I turned.

“What's wrong?””

She stared at the name.

Then whispered:

“Emily had a sister?””

I looked at the letter.

I had been married to Emily for eight years.

I had attended her funeral.

I had believed I knew everything about her.

But apparently, there was one more person who knew the truth.

And that person had been kept away from our family for eleven years.
