Chapter 12: The Record They Changed
Patricia Coleman arrived at Robert's office at ten the following morning.
She was a woman in her sixties, with silver hair and a navy handbag resting on her lap.
She looked frightened.
Robert introduced us.
“Ms. Coleman, thank you for coming.””
She nodded.
“I've waited a long time to do this.””
I sat opposite her.
“Why now?””
She looked down at her hands.
“Because I saw what happened to Emily's daughter. And because I don't want to spend the rest of my life protecting a man like Daniel Brooks.””
Robert opened his notebook.
“Please explain your involvement.””
Patricia took a deep breath.
“Eleven years ago, Emily Bennett gave birth to a little girl at our hospital. The father listed on the initial paperwork was Marcus Hale.””
I nodded.
“That was me.””
Patricia continued.
“Several days later, a man came to the administration office. He identified himself as Daniel Brooks. He claimed he was the biological father and had been excluded from the birth process.””
My jaw tightened.
“What happened?””
“He showed me messages between himself and Emily. He said she had admitted the baby was his.””
Robert interrupted.
“Did you verify those messages?””
Patricia shook her head.
“No. I should have.””
She looked at me.
“He offered me money to change the internal parentage notes.””
I felt sick.
“How much?””
“Fifteen thousand dollars.””
Robert wrote it down.
“Did you accept?””
Patricia closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
I stood.
“You changed my daughter's records for fifteen thousand dollars?””
Patricia began crying.
“I was struggling financially. My husband had just lost his job. I told myself I was only changing an internal note.””
“What exactly did you change?””
“The record was amended to indicate that paternity had been disputed and that the biological father was unknown.””
I stared at her.
“Did you change my name?””
“No. Your name remained on the birth registration. But I added a notation that the biological relationship had not been independently verified.””
Robert leaned forward.
“Was there a DNA test?””
“No.””
“Was there any legal order?””
“No.””
“Did you have authority to alter the record?””
Patricia shook her head.
“No.””
I walked to the window.
Eleven years.
Daniel had spent eleven years building a lie around a child he had never raised.
And Vanessa had walked straight into that lie because she wanted a baby and a future with him.
I turned back.
“Why did you help him again recently?””
Patricia looked confused.
“I didn't.””
“Daniel said he had someone at the hospital who could confirm Emily identified him as the father.””
Patricia shook her head.
“I never heard Emily say that.””
“Then what was he planning?””
Patricia hesitated.
“He contacted me three months ago. He wanted me to create a new letter using the old hospital records.””
Robert's pen stopped.
“What kind of letter?””
“A statement claiming Emily had identified Daniel as the biological father before Maya's birth.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“Did you create it?””
Patricia shook her head.
“No. I refused.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew it was wrong.””
Robert leaned forward.
“Do you still have the communications?””
Patricia opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.
Inside were printed emails and a photograph of a handwritten payment receipt.
Robert examined them.
“Did you report this to anyone?””
“Not until now.””
She lowered her head.
“I know I should have done it sooner.””
I looked at her.
“You helped Daniel hurt my family.””
Patricia nodded.
“I did.””
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Then I asked the question that had been eating at me.
“Can you establish whether Maya is biologically related to Daniel?””
Patricia shook her head.
“No. I can only tell you what happened to the records.””
Robert explained that the DNA report Vanessa had obtained would need to be verified through an independent process.
He also made it clear that any genetic relationship would not automatically determine legal parentage or custody.
I nodded.
I needed the truth.
But I also needed to protect Maya from being treated like evidence.
After Patricia left, Robert placed the documents into a secure folder.
“This is substantial evidence of record manipulation and suspected fraud.””
“Can we stop Daniel's petition?””
“We can challenge it. We can also ask the court to consider the forged documents and the circumstances surrounding the DNA testing.””
I looked at him.
“And the baby?””
Robert sighed.
“Lily's legal situation is separate. We need to ensure that Claire receives independent legal advice and that the child's welfare remains the priority.””
I nodded.
I didn't want Lily punished for what the adults had done.
She deserved a chance at a normal life.
So did Maya.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Claire.
Marcus, please call me. I found something in the hospital documents.
I stepped into the hallway and called her.
She answered immediately.
“I've been trying to reach you.””
“What happened?””
“Daniel came to the hospital this morning.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“He wanted me to sign a statement saying I had knowingly agreed to transfer Lily to Vanessa.””
“Did you sign?””
“No.””
“Good.””
Claire's voice trembled.
“He said if I didn't, he would make sure I never saw Lily again.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did you tell the hospital?””
“Yes. They've documented the visit.””
“What did you find?””
Claire hesitated.
“An old document attached to the pregnancy arrangement. It lists the original donor.””
“Daniel?””
“No.””
I felt a chill.
“Who?””
Claire read the name.
I didn't recognize it.
Then she continued.
“There's another name listed as the intended parent.””
“Vanessa?””
“No.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Claire lowered her voice.
“Patricia's document shows that Daniel wasn't the only person involved in arranging this. Someone from his family was funding the entire operation.””
I thought of Laura's warning.
Daniel's mother.
The woman who had supposedly paid people to keep Emily silent.
“What's her name?””
Claire answered.
“Margaret Brooks.””
I gripped the phone.
Daniel's mother.
“What does she want with the baby?””
Claire was silent for a moment.
Then she said, “Marcus, I think she wants to raise Lily herself.””
I stared at the wall.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel told me something before the birth. He said his mother had always wanted a child who carried the Brooks family name.””
I felt sick.
“And Vanessa?””
“She was supposed to be the public mother. The woman who would make the arrangement look normal.””
I thought about Vanessa's fake pregnancy, the nursery, the photographs, and the payments.
She hadn't been building a family with me.
She had been playing a role in someone else's plan.
Then Claire said something else.
“There's one more thing.””
“What?””
“Margaret Brooks has already contacted a private attorney about taking custody of Lily.””
I closed my eyes.
The woman who had spent eleven years trying to erase Maya's existence was now trying to claim another child.
I returned to Robert's office and told him everything.
He listened carefully.
Then he asked, “Marcus, do you know where Vanessa is right now?””
“No. Why?””
Robert turned his laptop toward me.
An email had arrived from Daniel's office.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: FINAL FAMILY AGREEMENT.*
Attached was a document bearing Vanessa's signature.
It stated that she agreed to relinquish her intended parental claim to Lily in exchange for a substantial payment.
I stared at the screen.
“She signed this?””
Robert nodded.
“Apparently.””
“But she told me she wanted to raise the baby.””
Robert opened the attachment.
There was another page.
This one contained the payment details.
The amount was $250,000.
I read the recipient's name.
Vanessa Hale.
Then I noticed the date.
The agreement had been signed two days before I discovered the fake pregnancy.
I felt something inside me go completely still.
Vanessa hadn't merely been deceived by Daniel.
She had been preparing to sell her position in the arrangement before the baby was even born.
My phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
“What have you done?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Marcus, please listen.””
“You signed an agreement for $250,000?””
Silence.
“Where is the money?””
She began crying.
“Daniel promised me it was only temporary.””
“Where is it?””
“I didn't receive all of it.””
I closed my eyes.
“Who received the rest?””
She whispered a name.
And when she said it, I realized the betrayal reached even further than I had imagined.
“Margaret,” Vanessa said.
“Daniel's mother received the rest.””
Robert looked up sharply.
I held the phone tighter.
“Why?””
Vanessa's next words were almost inaudible.
“Because Margaret was the one who paid Daniel to get rid of Maya.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“She said Maya was the only person who could expose what happened to Emily.””
I stared at Robert.
May you like
Then I heard Vanessa whisper:
“And Marcus, Margaret is coming to see you tomorrow. She says she has something that will make you give up Maya forever.””
