Chapter 7: The Husband Who Was Declared Dead

For a moment, I thought Claire had misspoken.

I looked at the document in Robert's hands, then at the woman standing beside the hospital corridor.

“What did you just say?””

Claire swallowed.

“Daniel told the clinic you were dead.””

I stared at her.

“That's impossible. I'm standing right here.””

“I know.””

“Why would anyone tell a medical clinic that?””

Claire shook her head.

“I don't know everything. But I heard Daniel arguing with someone in the administrative office. He said the intended father was deceased, and that Vanessa had the right to make decisions independently.””

Robert examined the forged signature.

“Marcus, when was the last time you gave anyone permission to access your medical information?””

“Never. I've never even been a patient at this clinic.””

Robert turned toward Claire.

“Did you personally hear Daniel say Marcus was deceased?””

“Yes.””

“Can you remember his exact words?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“He said, 'The husband is no longer an obstacle. His death certificate is already being handled.''”

My stomach tightened.

“A death certificate?””

Claire nodded.

“He said Vanessa wouldn't have to deal with him anymore.””

I looked at my wife.

Vanessa was standing against the wall, her face completely drained of color.

“Is there something you want to tell me?””

She shook her head.

“Marcus, I swear I didn't know about that.””

“You didn't know someone had declared me dead?””

“I thought Daniel was handling the paperwork!””

Robert raised his voice.

“Stop. Nobody says another word until we understand what documents were submitted.””

He took photographs of the forged consent form and called his office.

I walked several steps away and leaned against the wall.

My phone vibrated.

Rebecca had sent a photograph.

It was Maya sitting at the kitchen table, eating toast.

Beneath it was a message.

She's okay. But she's asking whether Vanessa is coming home.

I stared at the photograph.

My daughter had spent months living with a woman who apparently believed her father could be erased from the family.

I called Rebecca.

“Keep Maya with you.””

“Of course. What's happening?””

“It's worse than I thought.””

Rebecca went quiet.

Then she asked, “Do you need me to come to the hospital?””

“No. Just stay with her.””

After ending the call, I returned to the group.

Robert was speaking to someone from his office.

“Yes, I want the documents preserved immediately. And contact the relevant authorities about the suspected forged signature.””

He ended the call.

“Marcus, we need to report the suspected identity fraud and forgery. We also need to establish whether any official record was altered.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Don't do that.””

Robert looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel can fix it.””

I stared at her.

“You still think Daniel is going to save you?””

“He told me everything was legal.””

“Then why did he tell people I was dead?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn't know he would go that far.””

Claire let out a bitter laugh.

“You knew enough to let him use another man's identity.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Don't pretend you're innocent. You accepted the money.””

Claire's expression changed.

“I accepted money to cover the medical expenses and the time I couldn't work. I didn't agree to help you steal a man's identity.””

The two women stared at each other.

Then Claire looked at me.

“Marcus, there's something else you need to know about the baby.””

I felt exhausted.

“What now?””

“The hospital has been keeping her in the neonatal observation unit. She was born a little early, but she's doing better.””

“Can I see her?””

Claire nodded.

“If the hospital allows it.””

Robert approached a nurse and explained the situation.

After checking the relevant records, the nurse agreed to arrange a supervised visit, but she made it clear that nobody could take the baby or make decisions about her legal placement without proper authorization.

We followed her down a quiet corridor.

The room was warm.

A small infant lay inside a clear hospital bassinet, wrapped in a white blanket with tiny pink flowers.

Her eyes were closed.

One hand rested beside her cheek.

I stopped at the doorway.

Two weeks.

That was how long this little girl had existed without my knowledge.

I approached slowly.

“She's beautiful,” I whispered.

Claire stood beside me.

“Her name is Lily.””

I looked at her.

“You named her?””

Claire nodded.

“I wanted her to have a name.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“I was going to call her Sophia.””

Claire looked at her.

“You were going to call her whatever you wanted. You never asked me.””

Vanessa looked away.

I watched Lily's tiny chest rise and fall.

“Is she healthy?””

“The doctors are monitoring her,” Claire answered.

“There were some concerns during the pregnancy, but she's stable.””

I looked at Claire.

“Did you know Daniel was the biological father?””

She shook her head.

“Not at first. Vanessa told me he was an anonymous donor arranged through the clinic. I discovered the truth after the birth.””

“Why didn't you tell me sooner?””

“Because I was scared. Daniel said he knew people who could make legal problems disappear. He told me I could lose my livelihood if I talked.””

Robert stepped closer.

“Ms. Bennett, did Daniel threaten you directly?””

Claire nodded.

“He said I would be accused of violating the agreement and that I could face legal consequences.””

Robert made a note.

“Please preserve every message.””

I turned back toward the bassinet.

Lily moved slightly.

Her tiny fingers opened and closed.

I felt an unexpected ache in my chest.

She hadn't asked to be born into any of this.

Neither had Maya.

And somehow, the adults who were supposed to protect them had turned both children into pieces of a secret arrangement.

My phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man's voice came through.

“Marcus, it's Daniel.””

My entire body stiffened.

“How did you get this number?””

“Vanessa gave it to me.””

I looked toward her.

She shook her head, frightened.

“What do you want?””

“To prevent a misunderstanding from becoming a disaster.””

“You forged my signature.””

A pause.

“That's a serious accusation.””

“You told a clinic I was dead.””

Another pause.

Then Daniel lowered his voice.

“Listen carefully. You have no idea what Vanessa and I have been trying to accomplish.””

“I know enough.””

“No, you don't. You think this is about a baby. It isn't.””

I glanced at Robert.

He silently gestured for me to keep him talking.

“What is it about?””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Your daughter.””

My blood ran cold.

“What about Maya?””

“She was never supposed to be involved.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Why did you have her DNA tested?””

“Because Vanessa asked me to.””

“Why?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said something that made my knees weaken.

“Because the original arrangement required proof that Maya was not biologically related to the donor.””

I looked at Robert.

He had heard every word.

“Why would that matter?””

Daniel's voice became quieter.

“Because the donor wasn't just me, Marcus.””

The call disconnected.

I stared at my phone.

Claire covered her mouth.

Vanessa looked like she might collapse.

Robert immediately took my arm.

“Marcus, we need to leave this room and speak privately.””

But I couldn't move.

I looked at Lily.

Then at the woman who had carried her.

Then at my wife's terrified face.

May you like

Daniel had just told me that Maya's DNA was connected to something far bigger than a fake pregnancy.

And I was beginning to fear that my daughter had been tested for a reason nobody had dared tell me.
