Chapter 5: The Woman They Paid to Disappear
I didn't sleep that night.
At six in the morning, Robert arrived with a folder under his arm and the expression of a man who had spent several hours making phone calls.
Vanessa was downstairs, sitting at the dining table.
She had changed out of her silk robe and was wearing jeans and a cream sweater.
The fake pregnancy belly was gone.
For the first time in seven months, my wife looked exactly as she had before announcing she was expecting.
Maya sat beside me.
Robert placed his folder on the table.
“Before anyone says anything, I want to make something clear. Nobody leaves with documents, devices, or financial records belonging to the household without proper authorization.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“This is ridiculous.””
Robert ignored her.
“Marcus has asked me to help establish what happened. Vanessa, if you have relevant documents, producing them voluntarily will make this process considerably easier.””
She crossed her arms.
“I don't have anything to hide.””
“Excellent. Then we shouldn't have a problem.””
Robert opened the folder.
“I've confirmed that D. Brooks Consulting is registered to Daniel Brooks. Its business address is a private office in downtown.””
I leaned forward.
“And the payment?””
“The bank has acknowledged Marcus's dispute. The scheduled transfer is under review. The previous transfer requires a formal investigation.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You had no right to freeze that money.””
“It came from our savings.””
“It's my money too!””
Robert raised one hand.
“We can address the financial dispute separately. Right now, we need to understand the pregnancy arrangement.””
Vanessa stared at the table.
Robert removed a printed document.
“Do you recognize this?””
She glanced at it.
Then looked away.
It was a payment agreement.
Claire Bennett's name appeared at the top.
The document described a pregnancy-related arrangement and included several payments tied to medical milestones.
One clause caught my attention.
Upon completion of the agreed arrangement, the intended parents shall receive all documentation required to establish legal parentage, subject to applicable law.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You told Claire she would have no rights?””
“She agreed to the arrangement.””
“That's not what I asked.””
Vanessa sighed.
“Daniel handled the legal side.””
Robert leaned forward.
“Did Claire receive independent legal advice?””
“I don't know.””
“Did she have access to her own attorney?””
“Daniel said everything was covered.””
Robert exchanged a glance with me.
“That's not reassuring.””
Vanessa stood.
“I don't have to sit here and be interrogated.””
Robert remained seated.
“Then you don't have to answer. But you should understand that the documents we have seen raise serious questions.””
Vanessa picked up her phone.
“I'm calling Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“Don't.””
She glared at me.
“You don't control me.””
“No. But I can tell you that my lawyer has advised me to preserve evidence. If you warn Daniel to destroy anything, that will make this situation considerably worse.””
She stared at me.
Then slowly put the phone down.
Robert asked her another question.
“Where is Claire now?””
“I don't know.””
“When did you last speak to her?””
“Last week.””
“Where?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“At a hotel.””
I frowned.
“What hotel?””
She didn't answer.
Robert wrote something down.
“Why were you meeting her at a hotel?””
“Because she was upset.””
“About what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Claire had become emotionally attached to the baby.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Of course she had. She was carrying it.””
“She knew the agreement.””
“She was a human being, Vanessa. Not a delivery service.””
Her face hardened.
“You have no idea what I went through.””
I stood.
“Neither does Maya. Yet you made her pay for every insecurity you had.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
For a moment, she looked almost ashamed.
Then her phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen.
I saw the name.
DANIEL.
Robert noticed too.
“Don't answer that.””
Vanessa ignored him.
She picked up.
“What?””
A man's voice came through the speaker, loud enough for all of us to hear.
“Why is Marcus's lawyer asking questions?””
Vanessa immediately lowered the phone.
Robert looked at me.
I reached across the table.
“Daniel, this is Marcus.””
There was a pause.
Then Daniel laughed.
“Good morning. I was hoping we could discuss this privately.””
“You can discuss it with my attorney.””
“There's no need to turn a misunderstanding into a legal dispute.””
“Then explain the eighty-five thousand dollars.””
Another pause.
“Vanessa paid me for professional services.””
“What services?””
“I'm not going to discuss confidential client matters over the phone.””
Robert leaned closer.
“Mr. Brooks, this is Robert Hayes. Please preserve all records relating to the financial transactions and the pregnancy arrangement.””
Daniel's voice became colder.
“I'm familiar with my professional obligations.””
“Good. Then this should be straightforward.””
Daniel ended the call.
Vanessa threw her phone onto the table.
“You've ruined everything.””
I looked at her.
“What exactly was supposed to happen?””
She stared at me for a long moment.
Then she finally spoke.
“Claire was going to give birth. We would take the baby. Everyone would believe I had delivered it.””
Maya looked up.
“Why?””
Vanessa ignored her.
“Because I wanted a family.””
“You already had one,” I said.
“Not the family I wanted!””
Her voice cracked.
“I wanted a child who belonged to both of us. I wanted people to look at me and see a mother, not the woman who married a widower with baggage.””
Maya's face went pale.
I felt my jaw tighten.
“She's not baggage.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I know.””
“No. You don't.””
Robert interrupted.
“Vanessa, did Claire actually give birth?””
She slowly lowered her hands.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Two weeks ago.””
My heart seemed to stop.
“Two weeks?””
She nodded.
“Where is the baby?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
“I don't know.””
Robert stood immediately.
“Who has the child?””
“Daniel was handling everything.””
I stepped closer.
“Vanessa, where is the baby?””
She shook her head.
“I'm telling you the truth.””
“Is the child alive?””
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
She whispered something.
I leaned forward.
“What?””
“St. Catherine's.””
Robert immediately took out his phone.
“Which hospital?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“St. Catherine's Women's Center.””
Robert began making calls.
I stood frozen.
A baby.
A real baby.
Born two weeks ago.
And I had spent the previous months preparing a nursery for a child whose existence I had never even been allowed to question.
Maya reached for my hand.
“Dad?””
I looked down.
“Yeah?””
“Is the baby okay?””
“I don't know yet.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I wanted to bring her home.””
I turned toward her.
“Her?””
Vanessa nodded.
“It's a girl.””
A girl.
I had never known that.
I had painted the nursery pale green because Vanessa said she didn't want to know the baby's sex.
I had bought a stuffed rabbit.
I had spent evenings talking to an empty stomach.
And somewhere, a real baby girl had been born without anyone telling me.
Robert ended his call.
“I've confirmed that a child matching the description is currently receiving care at the facility.””
“Can we see her?””
“Not without establishing who has legal authority and following the hospital's procedures.””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“I have authority.””
Robert looked at her.
“Do you?””
She didn't answer.
Then my phone vibrated.
A text message from an unknown number.
Marcus, my name is Claire Bennett. I carried the baby Vanessa told you about. I need to speak with you before Daniel gets to the hospital.
A second message appeared.
And there's something you need to know about your daughter.
I looked at Maya.
May you like
Then at the phone.
My hands began to shake.
