Chapter 11: The Brother Who Opened the Door

I ended the call without saying goodbye.

Daniel stared at me.

"What?""

I held up my phone.

"Catherine says you were originally listed as the person who introduced Vanessa to Elena.""

His expression changed.

Then he looked toward our mother.

She lowered her eyes.

"Daniel?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Marcus, let me explain.""

I stepped closer.

"Explain what?""

"Vanessa and Elena knew each other before you started dating.""

I froze.

"What?""

Daniel sighed.

"They met through a charity event. Elena was organizing a fundraiser, and Vanessa volunteered.""

I stared at him.

"How long before I met her?""

"About six months.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You knew Vanessa before she entered my life?""

"Yes.""

"And you introduced us?""

He shook his head.

"No. I introduced her to Elena. I didn't arrange anything between you two.""

I looked at our mother.

"Did you know?""

She nodded slowly.

I felt betrayed all over again.

"How many people knew?""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Marcus, listen. Vanessa wasn't the woman she became later. She was helpful.

Friendly. She donated money to the fundraiser. Elena liked her.""

"Then why didn't anyone tell me?""

"Because it didn't seem important.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Nothing seems important until someone dies.""

Daniel looked down.

I took a breath.

"Did you know about the trust?""

"No.""

"The medication?""

"No.""

"The insurance?""

"Absolutely not.""

I studied his face.

He looked exhausted, but I couldn't tell whether he was telling the truth.

"Then why is your name on the document?""

Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded paper.

"Because Vanessa asked me to sign something.""

I took it.

It was a copy of an introductory letter.

Daniel had signed a statement confirming that Vanessa was a family friend and that she had helped Elena during her fundraising work.

Nothing more.

"Why did you sign this?""

"She said the hospital needed confirmation that Vanessa was authorized to receive updates.""

"Did you read it?""

"Yes. But I didn't know she would use it to access financial documents.""

I looked at him.

"Did you ever see her with Dr. Cole?""

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

"Daniel.""

He sat down.

"Once.""

My chest tightened.

"When?""

"About a week before Elena died.""

"Where?""

"Outside the hospital cafeteria.""

"What were they doing?""

"Arguing.""

I stared at him.

"About what?""

"I couldn't hear everything. But I heard Dr. Cole say that he wasn't going to risk his license.""

My hands curled into fists.

"What did Vanessa say?""

Daniel looked toward our mother.

Then he answered.

"She told him he had already crossed the line.""

I walked away.

For a moment, I needed space to breathe.

Then Daniel spoke again.

"Marcus, there's something else.""

I turned.

"Of course there is.""

He swallowed.

"After Elena died, Vanessa came to me. She asked me to help her retrieve some documents from Elena's office.""

"Which documents?""

"She said they were personal.""

"And you helped?""

He nodded.

My stomach dropped.

"What did you take?""

"A folder.""

"Which folder?""

"The blue one.""

I stared at him.

The blue folder.

Elena's final letter had specifically mentioned it.

"Where is it?""

"I gave it to Vanessa.""

My mother covered her mouth.

I stepped toward Daniel.

"You gave her the folder?""

"She told me it contained old charity records. I didn't know about the hidden document.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't think it mattered.""

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I walked toward the door.

"Marcus, wait.""

I stopped.

Daniel's voice broke.

"I didn't know she was going to hurt Maya.""

I turned.

"Neither did I. That's the difference between us. I trusted her with my daughter, and she used that trust to destroy her.""

Daniel lowered his head.

I left the room.

Catherine called back ten minutes later.

"Marcus, I have another update.""

"What now?""

"I located the original trust registration.""

"Can it help us?""

"Possibly. The trust wasn't actually dissolved.""

I stopped walking.

"What?""

"The transfer was never legally completed. The institution flagged the documents because Elena's original trust contained a protective clause.""

I felt a flicker of hope.

"What clause?""

"Any transfer made without Maya's independent guardian's approval would be void.""

I frowned.

"Who was Maya's independent guardian?""

Catherine paused.

"Elena appointed someone before she died.""

"Who?""

"Her sister.""

I searched my memory.

Elena had an older sister named Rebecca. They had been close when they were younger, but they had lost contact after a family disagreement.

I hadn't heard from Rebecca in years.

"Where is she?""

"That's what I'm trying to establish. She was removed from the contact records after Elena died.""

"Can you find her?""

"I'm working on it.""

Then Catherine added something unexpected.

"Marcus, I also found a document showing that Vanessa attempted to change Maya's legal surname.""

I stopped breathing.

"Why?""

"She filed a request to have Maya registered under the Whitmore family name.""

"Did I sign it?""

"No.""

"Who did?""

Catherine hesitated.

"Daniel.""

I closed my eyes.

I called my brother immediately.

He answered.

"Marcus?""

"Did you sign a document changing Maya's surname?""

He was silent.

Then he said, "Vanessa told me you wanted it done.""

I almost dropped the phone.

"Why would I want that?""

"She said you wanted Maya to feel more connected to the family.""

"Daniel, I never said that.""

"I know that now.""

I ended the call.

Every new discovery seemed to lead back to someone I trusted.

That afternoon, Catherine met us at her office.

She spread the documents across a conference table.

"We need to establish three things before tomorrow's hearing," she said.

"First, Vanessa has no legal guardianship. Second, the documents she presented are potentially fraudulent. Third, Maya's statements about neglect need to be supported by independent evidence.""

I handed her the notebook.

She read several pages.

Her expression darkened.

"This is extremely concerning.""

Then I showed her the photographs of the plates, the refrigerator, and Maya's handwritten school notes.

I had taken them the night I came home.

Catherine studied everything.

"Did Maya speak with the school counselor privately?""

"Yes.""

"Can we request those records?""

"Principal Harris has agreed to provide them through the proper process.""

"Good.""

She looked at the audio recordings.

"And this?""

"Laura Bennett has the original files and is willing to testify.""

Catherine nodded.

"We'll need to authenticate the recordings.""

I leaned forward.

"Can we stop Vanessa from approaching Maya?""

"We can request a protective order, but the judge will need to review the evidence.""

She picked up the trust documents.

"One more thing. This signature belongs to Daniel.""

I stared at the page.

"Which one?""

"The signature authorizing Vanessa to access certain financial records.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"That's mine.""

Catherine pointed to a paragraph.

"According to this document, you also agreed to act as a temporary witness to the trust transfer.""

Daniel went pale.

"I never agreed to that.""

Catherine turned the paper toward him.

"Then someone used your signature without your knowledge.""

I looked at my brother.

"Are you telling me Vanessa forged your signature too?""

He nodded slowly.

"Apparently.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Catherine's assistant entered the room.

"Ms. Brooks, there's a woman downstairs asking for Mr. Reed.""

"Who?""

The assistant checked her phone.

"She says her name is Rebecca Collins.""

I stood.

"Elena's sister?""

"Yes.""

Catherine looked surprised.

"That's the guardian we've been trying to locate.""

I rushed downstairs.

A woman stood near the reception desk.

She had dark hair, tired eyes, and a small silver necklace around her neck.

The moment she saw me, she started crying.

"Marcus?""

"Rebecca.""

She walked toward me.

"I've been trying to reach you for three years.""

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you?""

She reached into her bag and pulled out a photograph.

It showed Elena holding a newborn Maya.

On the back was a handwritten message.

*Rebecca, if Marcus ever brings Vanessa into Maya's life, please tell him what happened before the wedding.*

I looked up.

"Before which wedding?""

Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.

"Your wedding to Vanessa.""

I felt my heart stop.

She lowered her voice.

"Marcus, Vanessa didn't meet Elena through Daniel.""

May you like

She handed me another document.

"She met her through me.""
