Chapter 7: The Man I Trusted With Everything
I stared at the photograph until the screen went dark.
Robert Hayes.
My attorney.
The man who had handled my business contracts, reviewed my property agreements, and advised me through the most difficult years of my life.
The man I had called the night before because I needed someone I could trust.
He had been standing outside Elena's hospital room with Vanessa.
Three years earlier.
Before Elena died.
"Marcus?""
Daniel's voice sounded distant.
I turned the phone toward him.
He studied the photograph.
"That's Robert?""
"Yes.""
"Are you sure?""
"I'd recognize him anywhere.""
Daniel enlarged the image.
Robert was holding a leather briefcase. Vanessa stood beside him, her hand resting on his arm.
They weren't arguing.
They were smiling.
I felt something inside me collapse.
Maya approached the table.
"Dad, what's wrong?""
I quickly locked my phone.
"Nothing you need to worry about, sweetheart.""
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
"Is it Vanessa again?""
I crouched beside her.
"Some adults have made some very bad decisions. I'm going to make sure they can't hurt you.""
She nodded.
"Can I go watch television?""
"Of course.""
Daniel walked her into the living room.
As soon as she was out of earshot, he turned toward me.
"You need another lawyer.""
"I know.""
"Immediately.""
I called Robert.
He answered on the first ring.
"Marcus, I've been waiting for your response.""
I forced my voice to remain calm.
"Robert, I received an email with a photograph attached.""
A pause.
"What photograph?""
"You standing outside Elena's hospital room with Vanessa.""
Silence.
Then a long sigh.
"Marcus, I can explain that.""
"Good. Explain it.""
"It was a professional meeting. Vanessa contacted me because she was concerned about the estate documents.""
"At the hospital? The night before Elena died?""
"She was handling administrative matters.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because it wasn't relevant to the current situation.""
"Was it relevant to the $1.8 million transferred out of my daughter's trust?""
His voice hardened.
"Be careful with your accusations.""
I almost laughed.
"You told me yesterday that Vanessa had forged my signature. Now I find you standing beside her before my first wife died.""
"Marcus, you're emotional. You're connecting unrelated events.""
"Then tell me what was in your briefcase.""
Another silence.
"Documents.""
"What documents?""
"I don't recall.""
I ended the call.
Daniel stared at me.
"That's not a denial.""
"No. It isn't.""
I opened the email again and examined the sender's address.
The message had been sent from an account registered to someone named Laura Bennett.
I replied immediately.
I need to speak with you. Please tell me who you are and what you know.
A response arrived less than a minute later.
*My name is Laura Bennett. I was a medical records assistant at St. Catherine's Hospital.
I worked with Dr. Cole. I kept copies of documents because I knew something was wrong.*
I typed another message.
What documents?
Her response came with an attachment.
It was a scanned hospital authorization form.
The document stated that Vanessa had been granted temporary authority to communicate with Elena's medical team.
But Elena's signature was dated two days after she had reportedly lost consciousness.
I zoomed in.
The signature looked familiar.
It was the same handwriting Vanessa had used on Maya's school documents.
Laura sent another message.
I have the original medical record showing Elena objected to the medication. It was later replaced in the official file.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
Why are you contacting me now?
Her reply came slowly.
Because Vanessa has started asking questions about the old records again. She knows someone has been looking.
Then another message appeared.
And because I heard she is planning to take Maya.
I immediately called the number attached to the email.
A woman answered.
"Mr. Reed?""
"Yes. Laura?""
"Please don't say my name loudly.""
"Where are you?""
"I'm not comfortable meeting yet.""
"Then tell me what you know.""
She hesitated.
"I saw Vanessa enter Elena's room carrying a small medication container. She told the nurse it had been approved by Dr. Cole.""
"Did you see her administer anything?""
"No. But afterward, Elena's condition changed.""
My throat tightened.
"Did you report it?""
"Yes. I told the hospital supervisor. Two days later, I was removed from the records department.""
"Why?""
"They said I had violated confidentiality procedures.""
I closed my eyes.
"Do you have proof?""
"I have copies of the original records, and I have a recording.""
"What recording?""
Laura lowered her voice.
"Vanessa and Dr. Cole arguing about a missing authorization.""
My heart began pounding.
"Can you send it?""
"No. I need to know you're serious about protecting your daughter. Vanessa has people who can make trouble disappear.""
I glanced toward the living room.
Maya was laughing at something on television.
"Laura, my daughter is eleven years old. She has been punished, starved, and threatened in her own home. I am not walking away.""
There was a long pause.
"Then meet me tomorrow at the public library on Westbrook Avenue. Ten in the morning.""
"I'll be there.""
"And Mr. Reed?""
"Yes?""
"Don't bring your lawyer.""
The call ended.
Daniel had heard enough to understand.
"You're going?""
"Yes.""
"Not alone.""
"Daniel—"
"I'm not arguing. If someone is trying to protect Maya, they should have two witnesses.""
I nodded.
But before we could discuss anything else, a notification appeared on my phone.
It was from the bank.
*Your joint account access has been temporarily restricted following a request from an authorized account holder.*
I opened the details.
The request had been submitted by Vanessa.
She had also attempted to transfer $45,000 to an external account.
The transaction was pending verification.
I called the bank immediately.
The representative confirmed that the transfer had been flagged because of unusual activity.
"Can you stop any further withdrawals?"" I asked.
"We can place a temporary security hold, Mr. Reed. However, the other account holder will be notified.""
"Do it.""
After the call, I sat silently.
Vanessa was moving money.
She was preparing for something.
And if the photograph was genuine, she had been planning this long before I ever suspected her.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
"What do you mean?""
He listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
"Marcus, Maya's teacher just called.""
I stood.
"What happened?""
"Someone has been asking her classmates questions about Maya.""
"Who?""
Daniel looked toward the living room.
"A woman claiming to be from a child welfare organization.""
My stomach dropped.
"Did she identify herself?""
"She left a business card.""
He handed me a photograph.
I read the name.
*Vanessa Whitmore — Family Support Liaison.*

She had created another identity.
And this time, she was using it to get close to my daughter.
