Chapter 6: The Mother She Pretended to Be

By the time I reached Lincoln Elementary, a police cruiser was parked outside the main entrance.

My stomach dropped.

Daniel parked behind me.

"Stay calm," he said.

I barely heard him.

I rushed through the front doors and saw Vanessa standing beside Principal Harris.

She was dressed in a cream-colored suit, her hair perfectly styled. She held a folder against her chest.

Two officers stood nearby.

And beside them was Maya.

My daughter looked terrified.

"Dad!""

She ran toward me.

I caught her in my arms.

"It's okay, sweetheart. I'm here.""

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"Maya, come here.""

Maya tightened her grip around my waist.

"No.""

Vanessa's expression changed.

"Don't be rude.""

I turned toward her.

"Stay away from my daughter.""

One of the officers raised a hand.

"Mr. Reed, I'm Officer Bennett. We need to clarify a few things.""

"Of course.""

Vanessa opened her folder.

"Officer, I have legal authorization to care for Maya. Marcus has been acting irrationally since yesterday. He's making accusations, taking the child without my consent, and refusing to let me speak with her.""

I stared at her.

"You're not her biological mother.""

Vanessa gave a wounded sigh.

"I have been raising her for two years.""

Maya shook her head.

"You haven't.""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Excuse me?""

Maya's voice trembled.

"You don't raise me. You make me clean. You make me hungry. You tell me Mom didn't love me.""

The principal looked stunned.

Vanessa immediately reached for her.

"Sweetheart, you're confused.""

Maya moved behind me.

"Don't touch me.""

The room went silent.

Officer Bennett glanced at the documents.

"Mrs. Whitmore, do you have a court order granting you custody or guardianship?""

Vanessa produced a notarized document.

"I have authorization from Marcus.""

I stepped forward.

"I never signed that.""

She looked at me.

"Of course you did.""

"Show me the original.""

She hesitated.

"It's in my office.""

"Then why did you bring only a copy?""

"Because I wasn't expecting this ridiculous confrontation.""

Officer Bennett examined the paper.

"Mr. Reed, do you recognize this signature?""

"No. It's forged.""

Vanessa laughed.

"That's absurd.""

I took out my phone and showed the officer the message I had received from the school earlier.

Then I showed him the forged signature on the counseling referral.

"I have reason to believe she has been falsifying documents.""

Officer Bennett nodded.

"We'll need to verify everything. For now, Maya can remain with you while we investigate the custody issue.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"This is unbelievable.""

Principal Harris stepped forward.

"Mrs. Whitmore, perhaps we should discuss the reports we've received about Maya's condition.""

Vanessa turned toward her.

"What reports?""

"The school counselor has documented repeated incidents involving hunger, anxiety, and unexplained bruising.""

I looked down at Maya.

My stomach twisted.

"Bruising?""

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

"She falls. She's clumsy.""

Principal Harris opened a file.

"That isn't what Maya told the counselor.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"What exactly did she tell you?""

The principal closed the folder.

"I'm not discussing a child's confidential disclosures in front of someone she has identified as making her feel unsafe.""

For the first time, Vanessa seemed to lose control of the situation.

She turned toward me.

"Marcus, you are destroying our family over a few misunderstandings.""

I looked at her.

"You destroyed it when you decided my daughter didn't deserve to eat.""

Her lips tightened.

Then she leaned closer and lowered her voice.

"You should be careful. You have no idea how much I know about your finances.""

I stared at her.

"What does that mean?""

She smiled faintly.

"Ask Robert Hayes.""

My attorney's name.

Why would she bring him up?

Before I could ask, Vanessa walked toward the exit.

Officer Bennett stopped her.

"Ma'am, we still need to verify the documents you presented.""

She turned.

"I have nothing to hide.""

But she refused to answer several questions about where the original authorization was kept.

Eventually, she left after providing her contact information.

I took Maya home with me to Daniel's house.

We ordered dinner and sat around the kitchen table.

Daniel made spaghetti.

Maya ate two servings.

Nobody mentioned food restrictions.

Nobody watched how much she ate.

When she finished, she looked at me.

"Can I have some more?""

I smiled.

"There's a whole pot, sweetheart.""

She filled her plate again.

Then she asked something that made my heart ache.

"Dad, when I turn twelve, will I still have to follow Vanessa's rules?""

I put down my fork.

"No.""

"Even if she gets mad?""

"Even if she gets mad.""

"Even if she tells you I'm bad?""

I reached across the table and held her hand.

"Nobody gets to decide your worth by how much food you eat, how quiet you are, or how well you obey them.""

Maya nodded.

Then she leaned against my shoulder.

For a few minutes, I allowed myself to believe the worst was behind us.

But my phone rang.

Robert Hayes.

I answered.

"Robert?""

His voice was unusually serious.

"Marcus, I received the documents you sent. We have a major problem.""

"What now?""

"Your wife's attorney contacted me this afternoon.""

I frowned.

"She hired an attorney?""

"Yes. And she claims you authorized her to access your first wife's estate.""

"I did not.""

"I know. But she has presented a financial authorization bearing your signature.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Another forgery?""

"Possibly. But there's more. I checked the public trust records. Elena's original trust was dissolved eleven months ago.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Dissolved? How?""

"Someone submitted a beneficiary release and a trustee resignation.""

"Who signed them?""

Robert paused.

"According to the records, you did.""

I gripped the phone.

"That's impossible.""

"I believe you. But Marcus, the money was transferred.""

"To whom?""

"An account controlled by a company registered under Vanessa's maiden name.""

I stood so abruptly that my chair scraped across the floor.

"How much?""

Robert took a breath.

"Approximately $1.8 million.""

Daniel stared at me.

Maya looked frightened.

I lowered my voice.

"Can we recover it?""

"That's what we're going to try. But there's another issue.""

"What?""

"Your wife's attorney claims the money was legally transferred with your consent. And she says she has witnesses who can prove it.""

"Who?""

Robert hesitated.

Then he said:

"Dr. Richard Cole.""

The same doctor whose name appeared in Elena's photograph.

I looked at Maya.

She was watching me carefully.

"Marcus," Robert continued, "I also found something in the records that you need to see.""

"What?""

"Vanessa wasn't just listed as a trustee after Elena died.""

I closed my eyes.

"Then what was she?""

Robert's next words made my knees feel weak.

"She was listed as a beneficiary of Elena's original insurance policy before the final amendment was even filed.""

I looked at Daniel.

He whispered, "That means she had access before Elena died.""

Robert continued.

"And Marcus, the amendment was submitted while Elena was still hospitalized.""

I stared at the floor.

Then I remembered the sentence Elena had written in her final note.

Don't trust anyone who tells you I stopped fighting.

My phone vibrated.

A new email had arrived.

The sender was an unfamiliar address.

The subject line read:

*I WORKED WITH VANESSA AT THE HOSPITAL.*

I opened it.

There was one sentence in the message.

*Mr. Reed, your wife wasn't the only person who knew what happened to Elena. I have proof that someone else helped her.*

An attachment appeared beneath it.

A photograph.

I opened it.

It showed Vanessa standing outside Elena's hospital room, holding a document.

Beside her was a man in a dark suit.

I recognized him immediately.

It was Robert Hayes.

My own attorney.

May you like

And beneath the photograph was a timestamp.

The night before Elena died.
