Chapter 14: The Birthday Cake That Exposed Everything
We reached Daniel's house in less than fifteen minutes.
The front door was open.
A chair had been knocked over in the hallway.
My heart hammered against my ribs.
"Maya!""
I rushed through the living room.
Daniel's wife, Emily, was standing near the kitchen, holding her phone.
She looked shaken.
"Marcus!""
"Where's Maya?""
"She's upstairs. She's okay.""
I nearly collapsed with relief.
"What happened?""
Emily pointed toward the kitchen table.
A bakery box sat there.
Beside it was a small gift bag.
My stomach tightened.
"Who brought those?""
"Vanessa. She said she wanted to apologize and bring Maya an early birthday present.""
I looked toward the staircase.
"Did you let her inside?""
"She showed me a message from Daniel saying it was okay.""
Daniel shook his head.
"I never sent that.""
Emily looked horrified.
"She had your number. The message looked real.""
I opened the gift bag.
Inside was a beautiful pink dress and a jewelry box.
The bakery box contained a small birthday cake.
A handwritten card rested on top.
*To Maya. From someone who will always love you.*
I felt sick.
"Did Maya eat anything?""
Emily shook her head.
"No. She said she wasn't allowed to accept gifts from Vanessa.""
I looked at her.
"Good.""
Then Maya appeared at the top of the stairs.
"Dad?""
I rushed toward her.
She came down and wrapped her arms around me.
"Are you okay?""
She nodded.
"Vanessa came.""
"I know.""
"She said she wanted to take me to her house.""
I crouched.
"What did you tell her?""
"I said no.""
Maya looked toward the kitchen.
"Then she got angry.""
My jaw tightened.
"What did she do?""
"She said you were making me hate her.""
I hugged my daughter.
"You don't have to go anywhere you don't want to go.""
Maya buried her face against my shoulder.
Then she whispered:
"Dad, she said she knows where Mom's things are.""
I pulled back.
"What things?""
Maya looked frightened.
"The pictures. The letters. She said she can throw them away if I don't come back.""
I held her face gently.
"She cannot use your mother to scare you.""
Maya nodded.
But her eyes remained fixed on the cake.
"What's wrong, sweetheart?""
She hesitated.
"Can I tell you something?""
"Always.""
"Vanessa said she was going to bring me a special birthday present. She said it was something Mom wanted me to have.""
I looked at the gift bag.
"Did she tell you what?""
Maya shook her head.
"She said I had to go with her to open it.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Marcus, we need to check the security cameras.""
Emily retrieved her phone.
The camera system showed the front entrance.
We watched the footage.
Vanessa arrived at 3:17 p.m.
She entered the house carrying the bakery box.
She spoke to Emily for several minutes.
Then she walked into the kitchen.
She placed the cake on the table.
And before leaving, she slipped something underneath it.
I paused the video.
"What is that?""
Daniel enlarged the image.
It was a small white envelope.
We searched beneath the cake box.
There it was.
Inside was a folded document.
I opened it.
It was a handwritten statement.
At the top was Maya's name.
The text claimed that Maya had voluntarily requested to live with Vanessa and that she understood the consequences of making such a choice.
At the bottom was a blank signature line.
My stomach tightened.
"She wanted Maya to sign this.""
Emily covered her mouth.
"She's eleven.""
"Exactly.""
I photographed the document.
Then I placed it in a clear plastic folder.
A knock sounded at the front door.
Two police officers stood outside.
Officer Bennett was with them.
"Mr. Reed, we received your call.""
I explained what had happened.
I showed them the forged message, the handwritten statement, and the security footage.
Officer Bennett examined everything.
"Has Mrs. Whitmore contacted you directly?""
I showed him the phone call.
"She threatened my daughter.""
He nodded.
"We'll document this. Given the ongoing custody dispute and the previous allegations, we need to be careful about any contact between her and Maya.""
I looked toward the stairs.
"Can someone make sure she stays away?""
"We can discuss protective measures with the court. For now, don't arrange any private meetings.""
Officer Bennett took the documents.
Then his partner approached.
"There's something else, sir.""
He handed me a printed report.
"Mrs. Whitmore was stopped earlier today after attempting to access a restricted storage area at the hospital.""
My stomach dropped.
"Why?""
"She told security she was collecting personal documents.""
"Did she take anything?""
"Not that we know of.""
I looked at the officer.
"Which documents?""
He checked his notes.
"Medical records connected to Elena Reed.""
I turned toward Daniel.
Vanessa was trying to destroy the evidence.
The officers left after collecting copies of the documents.
Catherine arrived shortly afterward.
I handed her the original will and Elena's final recording.
She examined the documents carefully.
Then she smiled.
"Marcus, this changes everything.""
"Can we stop the custody petition?""
"We can challenge it aggressively. The original will, the forged authorization, the school reports, and the recording of Vanessa threatening Rebecca create a much stronger picture.""
"What about the medical investigation?""
"We'll provide the materials to the authorities handling that inquiry. But don't expect an immediate conclusion. Medical and financial allegations need independent verification.""
I nodded.
Catherine opened the laptop.
"I want to review Elena's final recording again.""
We watched it together.
When Elena mentioned Richard Whitmore, Catherine paused the video.
"Did you know this man?""
"No. I never met him.""
Rebecca shook her head.
"I met him once. He was Vanessa's father. He owned a financial consulting business.""
Catherine searched through the documents.
Then she found something.
"Here.""
She showed us a company registration.
Richard Whitmore had been listed as a director of the company that received the money transferred from Maya's trust.
But there was another director.
Vanessa.
And a third name.
Robert Hayes.
Catherine leaned back.
"Now we have a much clearer financial connection.""
I stared at the screen.
"They were working together.""
"That's what the documents suggest. We need to establish the full transaction history.""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"How many people were involved?""
Catherine didn't answer.
Instead, she opened another document.
It was an old business agreement dated three years earlier.
The first page contained a clause about referral commissions.
The second page listed a payment made to an account belonging to someone named Daniel Reed.
My brother went pale.
"That's not mine.""
Catherine studied him.
"Do you recognize the account?""
Daniel shook his head.
"No.""
I looked at him.
"Are you sure?""
"Marcus, I swear.""
Catherine checked the account number.
Then she looked up.
"This isn't your account. Someone has used your name.""
Daniel let out a breath.
But Catherine wasn't finished.
"The payment was made two weeks before Elena died.""
I stared at the date.
It was the same week Daniel had introduced Vanessa to Elena.
He looked sick.
"I didn't take that money.""
"I believe you," I said.
Then Catherine pointed to the payment description.
*INTRODUCTION FEE — FAMILY TRUST ACQUISITION.*
The room went silent.
Daniel whispered, "Someone paid for the introduction.""
I looked at the photograph of Elena holding baby Maya.
Then I looked at the document.
Someone had planned this long before Vanessa became my wife.
Catherine closed the file.
"The hearing is tomorrow morning. I want everyone there. Marcus, Rebecca, Daniel, Laura, and Principal Harris.""
I nodded.
"Whatever it takes.""
That evening, Maya came downstairs wearing her pajamas.
She sat beside me on the sofa.
"Dad?""
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Will you still have to go away for work?""
I looked at her.
"Not for a while.""
"Promise?""
I held her hand.
"I promise I won't disappear without making sure you're safe.""
She rested her head against my shoulder.
Then she asked:
"Can we have my birthday party at home?""
I smiled.
"Of course.""
"Can Aunt Rebecca come?""
"Absolutely.""
"Can we have Mom's pictures?""
My throat tightened.
"Every single one.""
She smiled.
Then she looked toward the music box sitting on the coffee table.
"Can I hear Mom's song?""
I opened it.
The familiar melody filled the room.
Maya closed her eyes.
For a moment, everything felt peaceful.
Then my phone rang.
Catherine.
I answered.
"Marcus, I just received an emergency filing from Vanessa's attorney.""
My stomach tightened.
"What now?""
"The petition has been withdrawn.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because Vanessa is asking the court to approve a private settlement.""
"Settlement for what?""
Catherine's voice lowered.
"She's offering to withdraw all custody claims if you agree to transfer $900,000 to her company.""
I stared at the phone.
"She's demanding money?""
"Yes.""
I looked at the music box.
Then at Maya.
I understood.
Vanessa didn't want to be a mother.
She wanted control.
And when she realized she might lose the money, she was willing to abandon every claim she had made about loving my daughter.
I took a breath.
"Tell her no.""
Catherine paused.
"Are you sure?""
"Absolutely.""
I ended the call.
Then I looked at Maya.
She was still listening to the music.
And I made a decision.
Vanessa had spent years treating my daughter's love as something she could purchase.
May you like
Tomorrow, the court would hear the truth.
And for once, Vanessa wouldn't be the person controlling the story.
