Chapter 8: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear
The following morning, Daniel and I arrived at the Westbrook Public Library twenty minutes early.
I hadn't slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the photograph of Vanessa standing beside Robert outside Elena's hospital room.
I also kept hearing Maya's voice.
She said you would get tired of me too.
I had promised my daughter that nobody would hurt her again.
But I was beginning to understand that protecting her would require more than walking away from Vanessa.
It would require exposing everything.
At 9:58, a woman entered the library carrying a canvas bag.
She was in her early forties, with short brown hair and a navy jacket.
She looked around nervously.
Then she approached our table.
"Mr. Reed?""
"Laura Bennett?""
She nodded.
Daniel stood.
"I'm his brother.""
Laura glanced at him.
"I thought I asked him to come alone.""
"He knows everything.""
She hesitated, then sat down.
"Fine. But I need you to understand something. I don't want my name appearing in any public report until I've spoken to an attorney.""
"Understood," I said.
She removed a small envelope from her bag.
Inside were three documents and a USB drive.
"This is what I kept.""
I examined the first document.
It was an original medication administration record.
Elena had been prescribed one medication, but a second substance had been added to the hospital chart.
The entry was marked as an emergency adjustment.
The authorization field contained Dr. Cole's signature.
"Was this medication dangerous?"" I asked.
Laura folded her hands.
"Any medication can be dangerous when administered incorrectly. I can't make a medical conclusion. But the dosage recorded here was inconsistent with the earlier treatment plan.""
"Did Elena know?""
"According to the original notes, she questioned it repeatedly.""
She pointed to a handwritten entry.
Patient refuses additional medication until attending physician explains dosage.
I looked at the next line.
Medication administered under physician authorization.
"Who administered it?""
Laura shook her head.
"The staff member's initials were removed from the final copy.""
My jaw tightened.
"Why?""
"That's what I wanted to know.""
She pushed the USB drive toward me.
"This contains the recording.""
I didn't touch it immediately.
"What's on it?""
Laura took a breath.
"Vanessa and Dr. Cole arguing in a records office. They didn't know the room's security microphone was still active.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"How did you get it?""
"I was responsible for retrieving audio backups during an equipment replacement. The file was marked for deletion. I copied it.""
I looked at her.
"Why didn't you go to the police?""
"I was twenty-seven, supporting my mother, and terrified of losing my job. By the time I understood what had happened, the official records had already been changed.""
Her eyes filled.
"I have regretted it every day.""
I picked up the drive.
"Thank you.""
Laura shook her head.
"Don't thank me yet. You haven't heard it.""
We found a private study room.
Daniel brought his laptop.
I inserted the drive.
A file appeared.
*ROOM_4B_AUDIO_0314.*
I pressed play.
At first, there was background noise.
Then a man's voice.
Dr. Cole.
"You're asking me to change a record that has already been finalized.""
Vanessa answered.
"Then finalize another one.""
"You don't understand the consequences.""
"I understand perfectly. Marcus cannot see the original dosage.""
"He's going to ask questions.""
"Then tell him what you told him before. That Elena was confused.""
There was a pause.
Dr. Cole spoke again.
"She knows something is wrong.""
Vanessa laughed.
"She won't be in a position to tell anyone much longer.""
My entire body went rigid.
Daniel stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
Dr. Cole sounded nervous.
"That isn't what we agreed.""
Vanessa's voice became colder.
"We agreed you would help me manage the situation. You signed the authorization.""
"And the trust?""
"That will be handled separately.""
"What about the daughter?""
A chair scraped across the floor.
Then Vanessa said something that made my blood turn to ice.
"Once Elena is gone, Marcus will be too broken to notice what happens. And if he ever becomes difficult, Maya will be the one who pays for it.""
I slammed my hand against the table.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
"Marcus. Calm down.""
The recording continued.
Dr. Cole asked, "And the insurance money?""
Vanessa answered without hesitation.
"By the time anyone checks, everything will be in my name.""
Then came the sound of a door opening.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I stared at the laptop.
"She knew.""
Daniel nodded.
"She knew exactly what she was doing.""
Laura looked down.
"There's more.""
She removed another paper from her bag.
It was a printed email dated six months after Elena's death.
The sender was Dr. Cole.
The recipient was Robert Hayes.
The subject line read:
*RE: Elena Reed Medical Documentation.*
The email contained only a few sentences.
The matter was handled as discussed. The family has accepted the official findings. I recommend no further communication.
Robert had replied:
Agreed. The trust transfer must remain separate from the medical matter.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
My own attorney hadn't simply met Vanessa.
He had apparently helped separate the financial arrangements from the medical investigation.
"Why would Robert do this?"" Daniel asked.
Laura looked at me.
"Money.""
I thought about the $1.8 million.
The forged documents.
The insurance policy.
Then I remembered the trust records.
Robert had been the attorney who certified several of the changes.
He hadn't just failed to protect me.
He had helped the people who stole from my daughter.
I took out my phone.
"I need to contact the police.""
Laura nodded.
"There's one more thing I want you to hear.""
She opened another file.
"This one is from a voicemail Vanessa left Dr. Cole.""
I pressed play.
Vanessa's voice filled the room.
"Richard, I need you to call me. Marcus is asking questions again. He found something in Elena's things. If he gets to the original documents, we're finished.""
A pause.
Then she continued.
"And make sure the school understands that Maya isn't safe with him. I have already started the process.""
The message ended.
I looked at Daniel.
"What process?""
Laura opened her canvas bag again and removed a final document.
It was a petition for emergency custody.
Vanessa had filed it that morning.
The allegations were outrageous.
She claimed I was emotionally unstable, financially irresponsible, and potentially dangerous to Maya.
She had attached the forged guardianship authorization as supporting evidence.
But the final page was worse.
It listed a witness.
*Robert Hayes, Attorney at Law.*
Daniel whispered, "She's trying to take Maya through the courts.""
I checked the timestamp.
The hearing was scheduled for the following afternoon.
I looked at Laura.
"Can you testify?""
She nodded.
"If my identity is protected until the appropriate time, yes.""
I turned toward Daniel.
"Call the new attorney. Tell him we have an audio recording, original medical records, and evidence of financial fraud.""
Daniel picked up his phone.
I was about to leave when Laura grabbed my sleeve.
"Mr. Reed.""
I turned.
Her expression had changed.
"There's something I didn't tell you about the recording.""
"What?""
"That file wasn't the only recording in the archive.""
She reached into her bag and pulled out a second USB drive.
"This one contains a conversation recorded inside Elena's hospital room.""
My heart began pounding.
"Who is speaking?""
Laura looked directly into my eyes.
"Elena.""
I stared at the drive.
"Is she talking to Vanessa?""
Laura shook her head.
"No.""
May you like
She paused.
"She's talking to you.""
