Chapter 12: The Woman Who Introduced My Wife
I stared at Rebecca.
"What do you mean you introduced Vanessa to Elena?""
Rebecca took a shaky breath.
"Vanessa worked for a charity organization I supported years ago. She was charming, persuasive, and very good at making people feel important.""
I looked at the document in my hand.
It was a letter dated six months before Elena's death.
Rebecca continued.
"She approached me about helping with a fundraising event. I introduced her to Elena because I thought they would get along.""
"Why did Elena write that you should tell me something before my wedding?""
Rebecca looked down.
"Because I recognized Vanessa's behavior before you married her.""
I frowned.
"What behavior?""
"She was always interested in Elena's financial arrangements. She asked questions about the insurance policy, the trust, and the property you owned.""
I shook my head.
"Why didn't Elena tell me?""
"She tried. But she was afraid you would think she was being jealous or paranoid.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
Rebecca sat down.
"After Elena became ill, Vanessa contacted me. She said she wanted to make sure the family was protected.""
"Did you believe her?""
"At first.""
She opened her handbag and removed another envelope.
"But then she asked me to sign a document giving her access to Elena's estate.""
I looked at the paper.
It was a trustee authorization.
Rebecca's signature appeared at the bottom.
"Did you sign this?""
"No.""
I looked up.
"Then whose signature is that?""
"Vanessa's. She copied my signature from an old charity document.""
Rebecca pointed to a paragraph.
"She wanted me to become the official guardian of Maya, but only temporarily. She said it was necessary because Elena was too sick to make decisions.""
I frowned.
"Why would she want you as guardian?""
"Because Elena trusted me. She believed I would protect Maya's inheritance.""
Rebecca paused.
"But Vanessa wanted me to sign another document transferring control to her after Elena died.""
I felt sick.
"Did you?""
"No. I refused.""
"What happened?""
Rebecca's eyes filled.
"She threatened me.""
"With what?""
"She told me that if I continued interfering, she would tell everyone I had stolen money from Elena's charity.""
I stared at her.
"Did you steal anything?""
"Absolutely not.""
"Then why didn't you report her?""
Rebecca looked ashamed.
"Because I had made mistakes in my own life. I was going through a divorce, and my finances were a mess. I was afraid people would believe her.""
I sat back.
It was becoming clear that Vanessa had spent years studying people's weaknesses.
She hadn't needed to force anyone to cooperate.
She had simply found the thing they were most afraid of losing.
Rebecca reached into her handbag again.
"I brought something else.""
She placed a small envelope on the table.
"This was given to me by Elena.""
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Elena, Rebecca, and Maya at a beach.
Maya was laughing, her tiny hands covered in sand.
On the back, Elena had written:
*My two favorite girls. No matter what happens, Maya must always know she has a family who loves her.*
I swallowed.
Rebecca pointed to the envelope.
"There's a second page.""
I unfolded it.
It was a copy of a legal document.
At the top was the title:
*Irrevocable Protective Trust — Minor Beneficiary.*
Elena had appointed Rebecca as Maya's independent guardian and financial protector.
The document contained a clause stating that no spouse, step-parent, or temporary caregiver could alter the trust without Rebecca's written consent and court approval.
Catherine examined it.
"This is important.""
She looked at Rebecca.
"Do you still have the original?""
Rebecca nodded.
"Yes. It's in my safe.""
Catherine smiled faintly.
"Then we may have the evidence we need to challenge the fraudulent transfer.""
For the first time in days, I felt a small amount of relief.
But it disappeared when Rebecca said something else.
"There's one more reason I came here.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
"Vanessa contacted me last night.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did she want?""
"She offered me money.""
"How much?""
"Two hundred thousand dollars.""
Daniel looked up.
"To do what?""
Rebecca's voice trembled.
"To sign a statement saying Elena had been mentally unstable before she died and that she had willingly given Vanessa control of Maya's inheritance.""
I stared at her.
"Did you agree?""
"No.""
"Did you record the conversation?""
Rebecca nodded.
She took out her phone and played the recording.
Vanessa's voice came through.
"Rebecca, this doesn't have to be difficult.""
Rebecca answered, "You know Elena didn't want you controlling Maya's money.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Elena wanted too many things.""
"She wanted her daughter protected.""
"Well, Elena isn't here anymore, is she?""
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa continued.
"Sign the statement, and you can walk away with enough money to start over.""
Rebecca asked, "And if I refuse?""
Vanessa's voice became cold.
"Then I'll make sure everyone knows what happened during your divorce. Your former husband won't be the only person who thinks you stole money.""
The recording ended.
Catherine immediately asked Rebecca to preserve the original file.
"This is potentially valuable evidence of witness intimidation.""
I looked at Rebecca.
"Thank you for coming forward.""
She took my hand.
"Elena made me promise I would protect Maya.""
Then she looked toward the hallway.
"Where is she?""
"With Daniel's wife. She's safe.""
Rebecca smiled sadly.
"Can I see her?""
"Of course.""
We returned to Daniel's house together.
Maya was sitting on the living room floor, drawing with colored pencils.
When she saw Rebecca, she stood.
"Who are you?""
Rebecca crouched.
"I'm your aunt.""
Maya looked confused.
"My mom's sister?""
Rebecca nodded.
Maya approached slowly.
"Did you know my mom?""
Rebecca's eyes filled.
"I knew her better than anyone.""
Maya held up her drawing.
It showed three people standing beneath a yellow sun.
One was a little girl.
One was a man.
The third was a woman with long brown hair.
"That's Mom," Maya explained.
"Dad said she liked the sunshine.""
Rebecca covered her mouth.
"She loved it.""
Maya studied her face.
"Do you have pictures of her?""
Rebecca nodded.
"Thousands.""
Maya smiled.
"Can I see them?""
"Whenever you want.""
For the next hour, Rebecca sat beside Maya and showed her photographs on her phone.
There was Elena at twenty.
Elena at her wedding.
Elena holding newborn Maya.
Elena laughing in the kitchen.
Maya touched the screen.
"I remember this dress.""
Rebecca smiled through tears.
"She wore it to your third birthday.""
Maya looked up.
"She told me she loved me every day.""
Rebecca hugged her.
"She did. And she still would.""
I watched them from the doorway.
It was the first time since Elena died that Maya had someone from her mother's side of the family beside her.
Then my phone rang.
Catherine.
I answered.
"Marcus, I need you to come to the office immediately.""
"What happened?""
"The court clerk just notified us that Vanessa submitted additional evidence.""
"What evidence?""
"A handwritten statement supposedly written by Elena.""
My stomach tightened.
"What does it say?""
Catherine paused.
"According to the statement, Elena wanted Vanessa to become Maya's permanent guardian.""
I looked at Rebecca.
She immediately shook her head.
"That's impossible.""
Catherine continued.
"And there's something else. The statement contains a signature from Elena that appears to have been witnessed by Dr. Cole.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"Can they prove it's authentic?""
"That's what we're going to challenge. But Marcus, there's a serious problem.""
"What?""
"The document is dated two days before Elena died.""
I closed my eyes.
Elena had been fighting for her daughter until the end.
She had left recordings, letters, and legal protections.
Why would she suddenly appoint Vanessa as Maya's guardian?
Rebecca stood up.
"Marcus, there's something you need to know.""
I turned.
She looked terrified.
"Elena told me she had signed one final document before she died.""
"What document?""
Rebecca swallowed.
"She said she had changed her will.""
"To give Vanessa control?""
Rebecca shook her head.
"No. She said she had made sure Vanessa could never receive a single dollar of Maya's inheritance.""
I stared at her.
"Then how did Vanessa get that statement?""
Rebecca's eyes moved toward Maya.
Then she whispered:
"Because Elena told me she had hidden the original will inside Maya's birthday present.""
I looked at my daughter.
May you like
Her birthday was next week.
And Vanessa had already bought the cake.
