Chapter 3: The Video That Changed Everything

I waited until Zoe was asleep before I opened the flash drive.

That decision had nothing to do with fear.

It had everything to do with protecting my daughter from one more piece of ugliness she never should have known existed.

Children should worry about homework.

Birthday parties.

Whether they want pizza or chicken nuggets for dinner.

They should not have to know that the adults they trusted built their lives on secrets.

But I was learning something painful.

Sometimes the people closest to you are the ones standing closest to the knife.

I sat in my home office with the curtains closed and my laptop open.

The flash drive had only one folder.

No name.

No description.

Just a single video file.

My hand hovered over the mouse.

For a moment, I thought about all the ways my life could change depending on what I saw.

Maybe I would find proof that Jordan misunderstood.

Maybe I would discover some innocent explanation.

Maybe Aaliyah really had left.

Maybe Andre really had died.

Maybe the last three years weren’t a carefully designed lie.

But deep down, I already knew.

People don’t hide innocent things.

I pressed play.

The video was dark and shaky.

It looked like it had been recorded from far away, maybe from a phone hidden somewhere.

At first, I couldn’t tell where it was.

Then I saw the room.

My chest tightened.

The lake house.

I knew every inch of that place.

The wooden fireplace.

The old leather couch.

The family portraits hanging along the wall.

It was where my father used to take us every summer.

Where Andre and I learned how to fish.

Where Aaliyah and I talked about having children one day.

And there she was.

Aaliyah.

Alive.

My hand covered my mouth.

I didn’t realize I had stopped breathing.

She looked different.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

She was standing across from my grandfather, Elijah Carter.

My father’s father.

A man who had taught us that family was everything.

But there was someone else in the room.

Andre.

My little brother.

The brother I buried.

The brother I cried over.

The brother I thought I lost forever.

He was standing beside my grandfather.

Alive.

I almost closed the laptop.

Not because I didn’t want to see.

Because I wasn’t ready to accept it.

Aaliyah’s voice came through the speakers.

“You can’t keep pretending this will disappear.””

My body went cold.

My grandfather answered.

“You need to understand what you’re risking.””

“What I’m risking?”” Aaliyah said.

“You moved millions of dollars from family accounts. You used Carter Development money like it belonged to you.””

Andre stepped forward.

“Aaliyah, stop.””

She turned toward him.

And the pain on her face was something I felt even through the screen.

“You knew.””

Andre looked away.

“You knew what they were doing.””

“Aaliyah…”

“No. You knew.””

My heart sank.

I watched my brother stand there, silent.

The same brother who used to tell me we would always protect each other.

The same brother who used to say nobody could break the Carter brothers apart.

Aaliyah continued.

“I found the records. I know about the shell companies. I know about the transfers.””

My grandfather’s voice hardened.

“You have no idea what you’ve uncovered.””

“I know enough to expose you.””

The video shook.

Someone moved.

Then Andre spoke quietly.

“You don’t understand what happens if you go public.””

Aaliyah stared at him.

“You mean what happens to you.””

Silence.

That was when I realized.

Andre wasn’t a victim.

He was involved.

The video ended suddenly.

I sat there staring at the blank screen.

My entire body felt numb.

Three years.

Three years of grief.

Three years of wondering why my brother and the mother of my child were taken from me.

But they weren’t taken.

They were connected to something much bigger.

I watched the video again.

And this time, I noticed something I missed.

The timestamp.

The video was recorded three years ago.

The night Aaliyah disappeared.

I grabbed my phone and called the only person who could help me understand what happened that night.

My father.

This time, he answered.

“Marcus.””

His voice sounded tired.

“Dad.””

A long silence followed.

Like he already knew.

“Where did you get it?””

My heart stopped.

“You know about the video?””

Another silence.

Then he said:

“You need to stop digging.””

I stood up.

“Stop digging?””

“Marcus, listen to me. You have Zoe. That’s what matters.””

“What about Aaliyah?””

No answer.

“What about Andre?””

The silence became heavier.

“Dad.””

Finally, he whispered:

“Your brother made his choices.””

My jaw tightened.

“You knew he was alive.””

Another silence.

And that was enough.

“You knew.””

“Marcus—”

“You knew my brother was alive while I buried him.””

His voice cracked.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Protect me?””

I laughed bitterly.

“You let me mourn people who were still breathing.””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain it.””

He didn’t.

That hurt more than anything.

Because sometimes silence is the loudest confession.

I ended the call.

Then I looked toward the hallway.

Zoe was standing there.

I froze.

“How long were you listening?””

She looked down.

“Long enough.””

I immediately walked toward her.

“Baby—”

“Is Mommy alive?””

I didn’t answer quickly enough.

And children notice things adults think they don’t.

Her face changed.

“She is, isn’t she?””

I knelt down.

“I don’t know everything yet.””

“But you saw her.””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Does she still love me?””

That question broke something inside me.

Because after everything I learned, after every lie and betrayal, that was the only thing my daughter cared about.

Not money.

Not revenge.

Not secrets.

Love.

I pulled her into my arms.

“She never stopped.””

And I meant it.

Because whatever Aaliyah had done, wherever she had been, I knew one thing.

A mother doesn’t disappear from her child’s life without a reason.

May you like

Someone had taken that choice away from her.

And I was going to find out who.
