Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Name

The meeting place was an abandoned warehouse on the edge of Atlanta.

I knew that was exactly the kind of place smart people avoided.

But I also knew something else.

If Andre wanted to hurt me, he had opportunities before now.

He could have stayed hidden forever.

Instead, he reached out.

That meant something.

At least I wanted to believe it did.

I parked a few blocks away and walked the rest of the distance.

Every step felt heavier.

Because I wasn’t walking toward a stranger.

I was walking toward my brother.

The person I had mourned.

The person I hated.

The person I still loved.

The warehouse door opened before I touched it.

Andre stood inside.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Three years disappeared.

Then came rushing back.

He looked older.

His hair was longer.

There were lines around his eyes I had never seen before.

But it was him.

“Marcus.””

I almost laughed.

That was all he had?

My name?

After everything?

“You’re alive.””

His eyes dropped.

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“I buried you.””

“I know.””

“You let me bury you.””

His face tightened.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

I shook my head.

“Everybody keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then explain.””

Andre looked away.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

My voice echoed through the warehouse.

“You helped steal from our family.””

“I did.””

“You helped make Aaliyah disappear.””

His face changed.

“I never wanted that.””

“But it happened.””

Silence.

That was the hardest part.

Not the shouting.

Not the anger.

The silence.

Because silence meant there was truth hiding inside it.

Finally, Andre spoke.

“When Aaliyah found the records, she wanted to expose everyone.””

“She should have.””

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“But she didn’t understand how dangerous they were.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“Grandfather.””

The answer should have shocked me.

But somehow, it didn’t.

“And Vanessa?””

Andre’s face became filled with regret.

“She knew more than anyone.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa wasn’t just helping them.””

He swallowed.

“She was trying to replace Aaliyah.””

My stomach turned.

“What does that mean?””

Andre looked directly at me.

“She wanted Zoe.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“She wanted my daughter?””

“Our daughter.””

The words hit me.

Because he was right.

For the first time in three years, I was standing in front of Zoe’s biological father.

A man who had been gone.

A man who had failed her.

But still her father.

Andre continued.

“Vanessa convinced everyone Aaliyah was unstable. She said Aaliyah was going to run away with Zoe.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did nobody stop her?””

Andre looked ashamed.

“Because everyone was protecting themselves.””

I hated how much sense it made.

My family had chosen money.

Power.

Reputation.

Over a woman’s life.

Over a child’s happiness.

Over me.

“Where is Aaliyah?””

Andre looked toward the door.

“She’s close.””

“Close?””

“She’s been watching.””

My anger flared.

“She watched me suffer?””

“No.””

Andre shook his head.

“She was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Of coming back and losing Zoe forever.””

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to say she should have trusted me.

But deep down, I knew fear made people do impossible things.

“Why did she call me now?””

Andre took a deep breath.

“Because Vanessa found out she contacted you.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

“Because Vanessa has been tracking everything.””

The warehouse suddenly felt unsafe.

“She knows about the files.””

Andre nodded.

“She knows you found the lake house box.””

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

Another message.

This time from Vanessa.

One sentence.

*You should have left the past buried.*

I showed Andre.

His face went pale.

“She knows.””

I looked at him.

“Knows what?””

He stepped closer.

“Marcus, you need to get Zoe somewhere safe.””

“Why?””

Andre’s voice dropped.

“Because Vanessa isn’t trying to hide the truth anymore.””

A pause.

“She’s trying to erase everyone who can tell it.””

And in that moment, I understood something.

May you like

The three years of lies weren’t because they were afraid of what I would discover.

They were afraid of what I would do once I knew.
