Chapter 5: The Brother I Buried

I drove home from the lake house with one thought repeating in my mind.

Andre was alive.

My brother.

The person I shared a childhood with.

The person who taught me how to throw a baseball.

The person who sat beside me at our mother’s funeral and promised we would protect each other no matter what.

Alive.

And he had known.

He knew Aaliyah was fighting for the truth.

He knew something was wrong.

He knew I was left behind believing two people I loved were gone forever.

By the time I pulled into my driveway, the sun was already coming up.

I had spent the entire night searching through the files from the metal box.

And what I found was worse than I imagined.

My grandfather and my father had created several fake companies connected to Carter Development.

Millions of dollars had been moved through those accounts.

Money that belonged to family investments.

Money that was supposed to support future generations.

But there was something else.

A document with Andre’s signature.

My brother wasn’t just aware of the theft.

He helped build the system.

I sat in my truck for several minutes, unable to move.

Then I saw Zoe looking through the front window.

She smiled when she saw me.

That smile almost destroyed me.

Because she didn’t know.

She didn’t know that the family she loved was filled with people who had made choices that hurt her.

She didn’t know her own father had been hiding from her.

I got out of the truck.

The moment I opened the door, she ran toward me.

“Daddy!””

I caught her.

For a second, I allowed myself to forget everything.

Just for a second.

Then I remembered.

“Did you sleep okay?”” I asked.

She nodded.

“Are we finding Mommy?””

I looked at my daughter.

Seven years old.

Braver than most adults I knew.

“Yes,” I said.

“We’re finding Mommy.””

She hugged me tighter.

But before I could take her inside, a black SUV pulled into the driveway.

My body immediately went tense.

The door opened.

A man stepped out.

Tall.

Older.

Gray hair.

My father.

Raymond Carter.

Zoe ran inside when she saw my expression.

My father watched her disappear.

Then he looked at me.

“You went to the lake house.””

I didn’t answer.

“You found the box.””

Still no answer.

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

I laughed quietly.

“That’s what everybody keeps telling me.””

“Marcus—”

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“No more.””

I stepped closer.

“You knew Andre was alive.””

My father looked away.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

“I thought he was trying to fix things.””

“Fix things?””

I held up the folder.

“You helped him destroy them.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked older than I had ever seen him.

Not like a powerful businessman.

Not like the man who built an empire.

Just an old man who had carried a secret too heavy for too long.

“Your grandfather made mistakes.””

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Turn criminals into victims.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You think this is simple?””

“No. I think it’s simple enough to know you let me bury my brother while you knew he was alive.””

My father looked down.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

The words stopped me.

“What?””

He looked around before speaking.

“Three years ago, Aaliyah discovered what was happening with the money. She confronted your grandfather. Andre got involved because he was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

“Losing everything.””

I shook my head.

“So he helped them.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“But then he realized how far it had gone.””

My father continued.

“Your grandfather wasn’t just moving money. He was hiding evidence. He knew Aaliyah had proof.””

“And Vanessa?””

My father’s face changed.

“She was working with them.””

I already knew.

But hearing it from him made it real.

“She helped create the story that Aaliyah abandoned Zoe.””

I felt sick.

“She stole my daughter’s mother from her.””

My father nodded slowly.

“And when Andre tried to leave, they made him disappear too.””

I stared at him.

“But he’s alive.””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

My father hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

That answer didn’t satisfy me.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

“I haven’t seen your brother in three years.””

The driveway went silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

A picture.

I opened it.

My heart stopped.

It was Andre.

Standing outside a building.

Alive.

And underneath the picture were six words.

*He wants to meet you tonight.*

I looked at my father.

He saw my face.

“What happened?””

I showed him the message.

His expression changed immediately.

“No.””

“What?””

“You can’t go.””

“Why?””

“Because if Andre wants to meet you now, it means he knows what you found.””

I looked at the picture again.

My own brother staring into the camera.

Like he knew I would see it.

Like he had been waiting.

“Maybe he has answers.””

May you like

My father shook his head.

“Or maybe he has another lie.””
