Chapter 8: The Final Betrayal
I didn’t confront my father immediately.
That surprised even me.
The old Marcus would have.
The old Marcus would have driven straight to his house.
He would have demanded answers.
He would have shouted until someone finally admitted the truth.
But three years of lies had taught me something.
People who build secrets are prepared for anger.
They know how to defend themselves against emotion.
What they don’t know how to handle is proof.
So I waited.
I planned.
And I gathered everything.
Aaliyah, Andre, and I spent the next day organizing the evidence.
Bank records.
Videos.
Documents.
Messages.
Every piece of the puzzle.
And the more we found, the worse it became.
My father wasn’t the mastermind.
But he was involved.
He had covered up the truth.
He had helped protect the family name.
Even when protecting the name destroyed the people carrying it.
That evening, I called him.
“I need to see you.””
He knew.
I could hear it in his voice.
“Where?””
“The lake house.””
There was silence.
Then:
“Okay.””
When I arrived, he was already there.
Standing on the porch.
The same porch where we took family pictures.
The same place where I once believed my father was the strongest man alive.
Now he just looked tired.
“You brought them.””
I looked behind me.
Aaliyah and Andre stepped out of the car.
My father closed his eyes.
“Your family is all here.””
“No,” I said.
“My family is finally here.””
The words hit him.
We walked inside.
I placed the files on the table.
“You knew.””
My father didn’t deny it.
“I knew enough.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He sat down.
“I knew your grandfather was moving money.””
“And you did nothing.””
“I tried.””
“You tried?””
My voice rose.
“You let Aaliyah disappear.””
“I was trying to stop things from getting worse.””
“How?””
“By keeping everyone alive.””
I stared at him.
“You expect me to believe that?””
My father looked at Aaliyah.
“I warned her.””
Aaliyah nodded slowly.
“You did.””
I looked between them.
“What?””
My father sighed.
“I told Aaliyah to leave town.””
“She refused,” Aaliyah said.
“Because she knew if she ran, they would win.””
My father looked ashamed.
“She was right.””
The admission sat heavy in the room.
“Then why didn’t you help her?””
His eyes filled.
“Because I was a coward.””
Nobody spoke.
Sometimes the truth hurts more when someone finally says it without excuses.
“I thought I could control it,” he continued.
“I thought if I stayed quiet, I could protect my sons.””
He looked at Andre.
“I failed both of you.””
Andre looked away.
“You failed Marcus.””
The words cut.
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
A video.
I opened it.
My entire body went cold.
It was Zoe.
Sitting in a chair.
Crying.
But she wasn’t injured.
She was scared.
Vanessa appeared behind her.
“Marcus.””
I felt everyone in the room freeze.
Vanessa smiled at the camera.
“You always were stubborn.””
My hands shook.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa ignored the question.
“You found everything.””
No answer.
“That’s unfortunate.””
Aaliyah stepped forward.
“Vanessa!””
Vanessa looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
For a second, I saw something human.
Then it disappeared.
“Look who finally came home.””
My blood boiled.
“Let her go.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That everyone chose her over me.””
The anger in her voice was decades old.
“You had the perfect family. Aaliyah had the perfect life. Marcus had the company.””
She leaned closer to the camera.
“And I had nothing.””
“You hurt a child because you were jealous?””
Her face hardened.
“I did what I had to do.””
“No.””
I stepped closer to the screen.
“You destroyed people because you wanted what belonged to them.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.
Because she knew.
The game had changed.
She wasn’t controlling the story anymore.
“Where is Zoe?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Come find out.””
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Andre spoke.
“She wants the files.””
I looked at the evidence.
Then at the screen.
Then at Aaliyah.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
I picked up the folder.
“She wants us to chase her.””
I grabbed my keys.
“She thinks she’s still in control.””
I looked toward the door.
“She’s wrong.””
Because Vanessa had spent three years hiding the truth.
May you like
But now the truth was coming for her.
And this time, she had nowhere left to run.
