Chapter 7: The Truth in the Walls

I had spent three years believing my family was broken because tragedy found us.

I was wrong.

My family was broken because people inside it chose to break it.

That realization followed me all the way home.

Every streetlight.

Every stop sign.

Every mile closer to Zoe.

I kept thinking about the same thing.

If Vanessa was willing to lie about a broken cup, what else was she willing to do?

When I pulled into the driveway, the house looked normal.

Too normal.

The lights were on.

The front door was closed.

A neighbor’s dog barked somewhere down the street.

Everything looked peaceful.

But I had learned something important.

Danger rarely announces itself.

Sometimes it smiles at you.

Sometimes it cooks dinner.

Sometimes it calls itself family.

I walked inside slowly.

“Zoe?””

No answer.

My heart immediately tightened.

“Zoe?””

Then I heard her voice.

“Daddy?””

She came running from the kitchen.

I grabbed her and held her.

“You okay?””

She nodded.

“Vanessa left.””

My eyes narrowed.

“When?””

I looked around.

“Did she say where she was going?””

Zoe shook her head.

“She just told me you were making everyone angry.””

My jaw clenched.

Of course she did.

Even now, Vanessa was trying to shape the story.

Trying to make herself the victim.

I carried Zoe upstairs and packed a bag.

She watched me carefully.

“Are we leaving?””

“Yes.””

“Because of Aunt Vanessa?””

I stopped.

Children always notice more than adults realize.

“Because Daddy needs to keep you safe.””

She nodded.

Then she asked the question I knew was coming.

“Is Mommy coming too?””

I sat beside her.

“I hope so.””

She looked at the floor.

“Does she know I miss her?””

I swallowed.

“She knows.””

“How?””

“Because a mother knows those things.””

That seemed to comfort her.

But it didn’t comfort me.

Because I knew what was coming.

The confrontation.

The truth.

The moment where everyone who had lied would have to answer.

I took Zoe to a hotel outside the city.

A place nobody in my family knew about.

Then I called the one person left who might have answers.

Aaliyah.

She answered immediately.

“Marcus?””

“I moved Zoe.””

There was silence.

Then relief.

“Thank you.””

“You need to come back.””

Another pause.

“I know.””

“No more hiding.””

“I know.””

“Aaliyah, I need the truth.””

Her voice softened.

“I’m ready.””

She told me where to meet her.

A small park near an old community center.

A place from our past.

A place where we used to take Zoe when she was little.

When I arrived, she was sitting on a bench.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

Because my mind remembered her in a thousand different ways.

Laughing.

Dancing in the kitchen.

Holding newborn Zoe.

Falling asleep beside me during movies.

But the woman sitting there looked like someone who had survived something.

Not someone who had simply disappeared.

She stood.

“Marcus.””

I looked at her.

Then I hugged her.

Not because everything was forgiven.

It wasn’t.

But because some part of me had spent three years waiting for that moment.

When we separated, tears were in her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

“I need to understand.””

She nodded.

“I never wanted to leave.””

“Then why did you?””

She took a deep breath.

“The night of the lake house, I found out your grandfather and my father—”

She stopped.

“My father?””

I stared at her.

She nodded.

“Vanessa’s father.””

Everything shifted.

“My grandfather and Vanessa’s father were working together?””

“Yes.””

Aaliyah continued.

“They were moving money through accounts connected to Carter Development. When I found proof, I confronted them.””

“And Andre?””

“He was already involved.””

I looked down.

“That still hurts.””

“I know.””

She looked away.

“But Marcus, Andre wasn’t the only one who was trapped.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“A few days before I disappeared, I discovered something else.””

“What?””

“Vanessa had been collecting information about Zoe.””

My stomach turned.

“Why?””

“Because she wanted legal control.””

The words made me angry.

“She wanted custody?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Aaliyah’s eyes filled with pain.

“Because she believed Zoe was the key to everything.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She knew about family trusts. She knew Zoe’s inheritance would be protected if something happened to me.””

I felt sick.

“So this was about money.””

“Partly.””

“What else?””

Aaliyah looked directly at me.

“Control.””

The word hung between us.

“Vanessa spent her entire life feeling like she was second to me.””

I remembered it.

The jealousy.

The comments.

The little insults disguised as jokes.

Aaliyah continued.

“She didn’t just want the money. She wanted my life.””

I looked away.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Did Andre know?””

Aaliyah closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“And he let you disappear?””

“He tried to stop it.””

“But he failed.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

It was Andre.

I answered.

“What?””

His voice was urgent.

“Marcus, where are you?””

“Why?””

“Because someone broke into the lake house.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“They’re looking for something.””

“The files?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Aaliyah.

She already knew.

“They’re going after the evidence,” she whispered.

Andre continued.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

“I found out who gave Vanessa the idea to punish Zoe.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Your father.””

The world went silent.

I couldn’t speak.

Aaliyah looked at me.

“What happened?””

I lowered the phone slowly.

May you like

Because the one person I thought might have been protecting me…

Was the person who had helped destroy everything.
