Chapter 4: The House Beneath the Lies

The next morning, I went to the lake house.

I didn’t tell anyone.

Not my father.

Not Vanessa.

Not even Zoe.

Especially not Zoe.

Some places hold memories.

That house held ghosts.

The drive there felt longer than I remembered.

Every mile brought back pieces of my past.

Aaliyah laughing in the passenger seat.

Andre arguing over music.

My father telling us Carter men never abandoned family.

Funny how those words sounded different now.

When I arrived, the house looked exactly the same.

Old.

Quiet.

Forgotten.

Like it had been waiting.

I unlocked the front door and stepped inside.

Dust covered everything.

The air smelled like old wood and memories.

I walked toward the living room.

The same room from the video.

I stood where Aaliyah had stood.

Where she confronted my family.

Where she fought to protect the truth.

Then I looked at the floor.

Under the floor.

That was where she said the files were hidden.

I searched for anything unusual.

Loose boards.

Marks.

Anything.

After nearly an hour, I found it.

A section of wood near the fireplace that didn’t match the rest.

My heart started pounding.

I grabbed a tool from the garage and carefully lifted the board.

Inside was a small metal box.

My hands shook as I pulled it out.

For a moment, I just stared at it.

Three years.

Everything hidden for three years was sitting in front of me.

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Contracts.

Photographs.

A small notebook.

And a letter.

My name was written on the front.

Marcus.

I opened it.

If you found this, then I know you finally learned the truth.

I’m sorry.

I wanted to come back.

I tried.

But there are people who will do anything to protect what they stole.

The money was never the biggest secret.

The biggest secret is who helped them.

My heart raced.

I turned the page.

The person you trust most is not always the person who loves you.

Sometimes it is the person who knows exactly where to hurt you.

I stopped reading.

Because I already knew.

I knew the letter was leading somewhere.

But I didn’t want to believe it.

Not yet.

Then I heard a noise.

A floorboard creaking behind me.

I turned.

Nobody.

“Hello?””

No answer.

I reached into my pocket and grabbed my phone.

Then I saw something outside the window.

A car.

Black.

Parked near the trees.

Someone was watching the house.

I moved closer.

The car started immediately.

And drove away.

I ran outside.

Too late.

Whoever it was had already disappeared.

I went back inside and grabbed everything from the box.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Who is this?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a woman spoke.

“Marcus.””

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that voice.

Even after three years.

Even after every night I cried myself to sleep wondering if I would ever hear it again.

“Aaliyah?””

Her breath caught.

“You found the files.””

I closed my eyes.

The world around me disappeared.

“You’re alive.””

A pause.

Then softly:

“Yes.””

My hands tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you yet.””

I felt anger rising.

“Three years, Aaliyah.””

“I know.””

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I never wanted that.””

“Then why?””

Silence.

When she answered, her voice was broken.

“Because the people who wanted me gone were the same people who had access to Zoe.””

I looked down.

At the files.

At the evidence.

At the proof of everything my family had hidden.

“Was Andre involved?””

Another silence.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

“Aaliyah.””

Finally, she whispered:

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“And Vanessa?””

Her voice became quieter.

“Marcus, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“She wasn’t just helping them.””

The line crackled.

“She was the reason I disappeared.””

I felt the blood leave my face.

Before I could respond, Aaliyah said the words that changed everything.

“Marcus, you’re not looking for the people who betrayed us.””

A pause.

“You’re looking at the people who have been waiting for you to find the truth.””

The call ended.

And standing alone inside that old lake house, surrounded by stolen secrets and broken promises, I finally understood.

The punishment Vanessa gave Zoe was never about a broken cup.

It was a warning.

A message.

May you like

They knew I was coming home.

And they wanted me to know they were ready.
