Chapter 11: The Daughter Nobody Asked
Nobody spoke.
For several seconds, I couldn’t understand.
The school request wasn’t for me.
It was for Brielle.
I looked at her.
She looked just as confused.
“What?””
Marcus showed her the screen.
“The school received a transfer request.””
Brielle stepped closer.
“For me?””
Marcus nodded.
Her face changed.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
“Mom?””
Vanessa looked away.
Brielle’s voice cracked.
“You were moving me?””
“I was trying to help you.””
“With what?””
No answer.
Brielle laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because she couldn’t believe it.
“You didn’t even ask me.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I knew you would say no.””
“Because you didn’t want me to?””
“Because I knew you were afraid.””
Brielle shook her head.
“No.””
She wiped her eyes.
“You were afraid.””
That sentence hit Vanessa harder than anything else.
Marcus watched quietly.
I think he was realizing something too.
This was never really about choosing between daughters.
It was about Vanessa trying to control every outcome because she believed she was the only person who knew what was best.
Brielle looked at the suitcase.
“My clothes are packed.””
Vanessa nodded slightly.
“I thought it would be easier.””
“Easier for who?””
The same question.
The one nobody could answer.
I watched Brielle slowly understand what happened.
She wasn’t being chosen.
She was being used.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You tried to send both of them into different lives without telling either one.””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I wanted to protect them.””
“No.””
My father shook his head.
“You wanted to control everything.””
The words were painful.
But true.
Vanessa sat down.
“I thought I was fixing things.””
Brielle whispered:
“You were fixing things that weren’t broken.””
Nobody corrected her.
Because nobody could.
My father walked toward the window.
For a moment, he looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Just exhausted.
Then he turned around.
“Where is Daniel now?””
Vanessa looked up.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I don’t.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You said he helped you.””
“He gave advice.””
“Then why did he know about the airline?””
Vanessa looked nervous again.
That nervousness returned.
The same one from earlier.
I noticed it.
So did my father.
“You’re still hiding something.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
Marcus walked closer.
“What else happened?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Nothing.””
Then her phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
This time, Vanessa didn’t touch it.
Marcus picked it up.
The message preview appeared.
Only a few words.
*They know too much. Leave now.*
My heart sank.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Who sent this?””
She didn’t answer.
Brielle stepped away.
“Mom…”
Vanessa looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
Marcus held the phone.
“You need to tell us.””
Vanessa whispered:
“If I tell you, everything changes.””
My father looked at me.
Then at Brielle.
Then back at Vanessa.
“Everything already changed.””
She closed her eyes.
And finally said:
“Daniel wasn’t helping me.””
The room went silent.
“He was helping himself.””
My father’s face tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked toward the folder.
Toward the documents.
Toward the life she had been secretly rearranging.
“He wanted access to something.””
My stomach twisted.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And I immediately knew.
Whatever she was about to say involved me.
“He wanted your information.””
My father stepped forward.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“Because he believed Maya had something that belonged to him.””
I felt cold.
“I don’t understand.””
Vanessa looked away.
“Neither did I.””
Marcus stared.
“What does my daughter have?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
The answer made everything worse.
Because if she didn’t know…
Who did?
Then my father’s phone buzzed.
Again.
This time, it wasn’t a message.
It was an alert.
He opened it.
And his face changed.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad?””
He turned the phone toward us.
A notification from the airline.
A security update.
*Account access attempt blocked. Identity verification required.*
Marcus looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
May you like
Then he whispered:
“Someone is trying to access Maya’s records right now.””
