Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

I didn’t cry when Brielle said it.

I thought I would.

I thought I would break down because the person who was supposed to be my family had gone further than I imagined.

But instead, I felt empty.

Like my emotions had run out of space.

My father looked at Vanessa.

“Did you forge her signature?””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Marcus noticed.

“So you know what I’m asking.””

“I said no.””

“Then explain the document.””

Vanessa looked around the room.

At the sofa.

At the staircase.

At the suitcase.

Anywhere except at us.

“I was trying to help.””

My father laughed quietly.

“That’s your explanation?””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

“You make everything about Maya.””

There it was again.

That sentence.

The one she tried to hide.

The one that revealed everything.

I looked at my dad.

He looked hurt.

Not because she was angry.

Because he finally understood.

Vanessa wasn’t upset about the trip.

She was upset about me.

“Maya has always been the priority,” Vanessa said.

I felt like I had been slapped.

Marcus stared at her.

“She’s my daughter.””

“And Brielle is mine.””

The words hung in the air.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus said quietly:

“So you decided my daughter should lose something so yours could gain?””

Vanessa looked away.

“That’s not what happened.””

“It is exactly what happened.””

Brielle stepped forward.

“Mom…”

Vanessa looked at her.

“What?””

Brielle’s eyes were full of disappointment.

“Why didn’t you just ask?””

Vanessa froze.

“If you wanted me to go, why didn’t you ask Dad?””

No answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

Brielle looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because part of me wanted to be angry at her.

But another part knew she was also standing in the middle of something she didn’t create.

Marcus picked up his phone again.

“I need to understand something.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“How did you access the reservation?””

Vanessa stayed silent.

“Vanessa.””

“I had the confirmation email.””

“That doesn’t give you permission to change anything.””

She looked frustrated.

“I’m your wife.””

“And she’s my daughter.””

The way he said it made the entire room still.

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“So that’s it?””

“What does that mean?””

“You’re choosing her.””

Marcus looked shocked.

“She’s fourteen.””

“She always gets protected.””

“Because she needs to be.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t see what this family looks like from my side.””

My father stared at her.

“No. I see exactly what it looks like.””

He pointed toward the suitcase.

“It looks like my daughter was replaced.””

I looked down.

The word hurt.

Replaced.

Because that was exactly how it felt.

Like I was an extra chair someone removed before guests arrived.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, everyone heard it.

I looked down.

Another airline notification.

Marcus immediately stepped beside me.

“What now?””

I opened it.

My eyes moved across the screen.

Then my heart stopped.

There was a new message.

*Account activity detected. Additional passenger records accessed.*

Marcus took my phone carefully.

He read it.

Then looked at Vanessa.

“Who else did you access?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Not confusion.

Fear.

And that was when I knew.

The ticket wasn’t the only thing she had changed.

My father looked at the screen again.

Then slowly raised his eyes.

“Vanessa…”

She didn’t respond.

“Why did you access Maya’s personal records?””

The room became silent.

Even Brielle looked shocked.

May you like

Because whatever Vanessa had done…

It was bigger than a vacation.
