Chapter 4: The Truth Behind The Suitcase
The silence after my father’s question felt heavier than any argument.
“You gave my daughter’s ticket to yours?””
Marcus didn’t raise his voice.
That made it worse.
I had seen my dad angry before. I had seen him frustrated when the car wouldn’t start or when work got stressful. But this was different.
This wasn’t anger.
This was betrayal.
Vanessa looked at the floor.
For once, she wasn’t fixing pillows or correcting someone’s tone or pretending everything was under control.
She looked caught.
“Maya,” she finally said, “this isn’t what you think.””
I stared at her.
“Then what is it?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
My father lowered the phone slightly.
“That’s what I thought.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Marcus, you’re making this bigger than it is.””
“Bigger than it is?””
He pointed at the suitcase.
“My fourteen-year-old daughter walked into this room excited for a family vacation and found out her place had been given away.””
Vanessa looked toward Brielle.
“She wasn’t supposed to find out like this.””
The sentence landed like a stone.
I felt my stomach twist.
Not supposed to find out.
Not supposed to know.
Not supposed to see.
How long had this been planned?
Brielle stood up quickly.
“Mom, stop.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her face was pale.
Marcus’s voice softened slightly.
“Brielle, tell me what happened.””
She looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
Then back down.
“I didn’t know everything.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Brielle.””
But Brielle shook her head.
“No, Mom.””
It was the first time I had ever heard her challenge Vanessa.
“I didn’t know you were going to lie to Maya.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“You’re blaming me?””
“No,” Brielle whispered.
“I’m saying I didn’t know.””
Marcus watched her carefully.
“What did you know?””
Brielle swallowed.
“I knew there was a problem with the trip.””
“What problem?””
She hesitated.
Then she looked at me.
“I heard Mom talking about the airline reservation.””
My heart sank.
“When?””
“A few days ago.””
A few days.
Not an accident.
Not a last-minute decision.
A few days.
Marcus tightened his grip around his phone.
“What did she say?””
Brielle looked uncomfortable.
“She said Maya wouldn’t be going anymore.””
My eyes burned again.
I hated that I was still surprised.
Some part of me was still hoping there was a misunderstanding.
Some part of me wanted Vanessa to suddenly cry and apologize.
But she didn’t.
She just stood there.
Defending herself.
“She was already planning to go on this trip,” Vanessa said.
I looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa sighed.
“Maya, listen.””
“No.””
My voice came out stronger than I expected.
“You listen.””
The room went quiet.
“I was excited because Dad told me we were going together. I packed my bag. I counted down the days.””
I looked at the suitcase.
“And you just decided I wasn’t part of it?””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“It wasn’t personal.””
I almost laughed.
How could something that hurt this much not be personal?
Marcus stepped closer to me.
“It was personal to her.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You don’t understand the pressure I’m under.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No. I understand exactly what happened.””
She looked away.
“You always choose Maya.””
The words slipped out.
Everyone froze.
My dad stared at her.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa realized too late what she had admitted.
“I didn’t mean—”
“Yes, you did.””
Marcus’s voice dropped.
“You’re upset because I’m protecting my daughter.””
“I’m upset because you don’t see everything I do.””
“What does that have to do with stealing her ticket?””
Vanessa flinched.
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
The sound cut through the room.
I looked down.
A notification appeared.
My heart stopped.
It was from the airline app.
A reservation update.
Marcus saw my expression.
“What is it?””
I slowly turned my phone around.
The message was short.
But it changed everything.
*Passenger information updated. Additional changes pending review.*
My father stared at the screen.
Vanessa’s face went pale again.
Because she knew something I didn’t.
And before anyone could ask another question…
Marcus’s phone rang.
He looked at the caller ID.
His expression changed.
“It’s the airline.””
He answered.
“Hello?””
Everyone waited.
My father listened silently.
Then his eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“What do you mean there was another request?””
My heart started racing.
Another request?
Another change?
Marcus stood completely still.
May you like
Then he asked one question.
“Who authorized it?””
